It also diverges from the body of migrant plays that Yana Meerzon has called \"cosmopolitan”—work that is marked by displacement, exile, and divided rather than merged subjectivities. Grounded in a combination of the Christian theological virtues, particularly faith, and Buddhist philosophy, particularly understandings of interdependence and coalescence, Yee’s award-winning work asks an engagement on the part of his audience that constitutes an activated, processual investment of spectatorial faith.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133924151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To answer this question, this article examines quantitative and qualitative changes in the Senate's impact on legislation since 2015. I look first of all at quantitative changes in Senate-Commons interaction, as assessed through the Senate's strong challenges to the Commons, more normal legislative review, and proactive policy influence. I then turn to qualitative case studies of Bills C-14, C-48, and C-69 to provide a more in-depth assessment of Senate review of legislation related to its core institutional mission. Overall, I argue that the newly independent Senate has been a much more assertive participant in the legislative process, but ultimately has been very mindful of reputational considerations and avoided going beyond \"moderate\" review. As a result, there are lingering questions about the practical significance of Trudeau's reforms.Résumé:Maintenant que le Sénat, « indépendant » grâce à Justin Trudeau, a connu une législature complète pour s'orienter, comment caractériser les relations qui se dégagent entre la Chambre des communes et lui? Pour répondre à cette question, l'article traite de l'influence du Sénat sur la législation depuis 2015 sous l'angle des changements quantitatifs et qualitatifs observés. L'auteur se penche tout d'abord sur les changements quantitatifs survenus dans l'interaction entre le Sénat et les Communes, analysant à cette fin les contestations vigoureuses des Communes par le Sénat, l'examen des lois par celui-ci en situation normale et l'influence proactive qu'il exerce sur les politiques. Il se tourne ensuite vers une étude de cas qualitative des projets de loi C-14, C-48 et C-69 pour approfondir son évaluation de l'examen qu'a fait le Sénat de la législation par rapport à sa mission institutionnelle principale. Dans l'ensemble, selon lui, le Sénat nouvellement indépendant s'est beaucoup plus investi dans le processus législatif, mais en fin de compte, il a été très soucieux de sa réputation et a évité de pousser plus loin que l'examen « modéré ». Par conséquent, des questions subsistent quant à la signification pratique des réformes du premier ministre Trudeau.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-04-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128050194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Concerns about climate change and fossil fuel insecurity have ensured significant interest in Canada in the technologies and financing for transitioning to clean energy, but far too little attention is being paid to the employment equity implications of such a transition. Despite growing awareness that renewables like wind, solar, and bioenergy generate a much larger volume of employment than fossil fuels, even organizations committed to advocating for social justice in debates about environmental sustainability in Canada have never specifically mentioned gender inequity. This article identifies opportunities and constraints for women's employment in the renewable and clean energy sector in Canada. Broad findings from this research suggest that women can gain optimal traction from clean energy initiatives only if there are wider socially progressive policies in place. Since women's ability to take advantage of new energy-related employment options is often constrained by social barriers that limit their access to certain types of education, training, and employment, it is crucial social equity policies go beyond energy sector planning to optimize economic opportunities for women. The conversation about gender equity in Canada's green economy is currently incipient and tokenistic. Raising awareness is therefore urgent and critical.Résumé:Les femmes sont minoritaires dans le secteur de l'énergie partout dans le monde, ce à quoi le Canada ne fait pas exception. Les préoccupations relatives aux changements climatiques et à l'insécurité liée aux combustibles fossiles ont suscité au Canada un grand intérêt pour les technologies et pour le financement de la transition vers l'énergie propre, mais on accorde beaucoup trop peu d'attention aux effets de cette transition sur l'équité en matière d'emploi. Malgré la prise de conscience croissante du fait que les énergies renouvelables comme l'éolien, le solaire et la bioénergie engendrent beaucoup plus d'emplois que les combustibles fossiles, même les organisations vouées à la défense de la justice sociale dans les débats sur la viabilité écologique au Canada n'ont jamais mentionné spécifiquement l'inégalité entre les sexes. L'article expose les possibilités et les contraintes concernant l'emploi des femmes dans le secteur des énergies renouvelables et des énergies propres au pays. Les conclusions générales de cette recherche donnent à penser que les femmes ne pourront profiter au mieux des initiatives en matière d'énergie propre que si des politiques d'ensemble socialement progressistes sont en place. Puisque la capacité des femmes à tirer profit des nouvelles possibilités d'emploi liées à l'énergie est souvent limitée par des barrières sociales qui restreignent leur accès à certains types d'enseignement, de formation et d'emploi, il est essentiel que les politiques d'équité sociale aillent au-delà de la pla","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124569918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Canadians’ burgeoning embrace of the team and the sport seemed to point to a growing celebration of Blackness within the nation. However, we problematize the 2019 championship win to tell a more expansive story about how sport and national myths conceal truths about race and belonging in Canada. We explore two particular cases—the “We The North” campaign and the media coverage of Raptors superfan Nav Bhatia—to highlight the contradictory ways that the Raptors coverage mobilized symbols of the North and multiculturalism to present the team as quintessentially Canadian and rebrand basketball for Canadian audiences. We further explore how these stark contradictions manifest in the racialized policing of basketball courts in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). These cases demonstrate that the celebrations of the Raptors and basketball not only continued to police racialized bodies, but also ensured that their inclusion was contingent on the maintenance of the status quo.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133605425","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To explore the ways that settler common sense (Rifkin 2013) is assembled and perpetuated in Canada, this paper examines how Wet’suwet’en mobilization is framed in news media coverage. Situating our work in relation to settler colonial studies and informed by the writings of Indigenous scholars, we use critical discourse analysis to assess mainstream news media framings of the Wet’suwet’en struggle. Drawing from literature on social movement suppression, we discern three main themes in these texts that work to validate the RCMP’s excessive use of force against land defenders and delegitimize the Wet’suwet’en’s claim to sovereignty. While this framing set the stage for sustained corporate incursions, police surveillance, and occupation across unceded Wet’suwet’en territory, we suggest negative framing as well as activist use of social media to visualize state repression may have created the conditions for what Hess and Martin (2006) call backfire.Résumé:Au début de 2019, la Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC) est intervenue au poste de contrôle de Gidimt’en dans le nord de la Colombie-Britannique et a arrêté 14 défenseurs des terres, ce qui a suscité l’attention des médias du monde entier. Pour analyser la manière dont le sens commun du colonisateur s’est constitué et se perpétue (Rifkin 2013) au Canada, l’article étudie le mode de présentation des Wet’suwet’en dans la couverture médiatique. En situant leur travail par rapport aux études sur le colonialisme de peuplement et en s’inspirant des écrits de chercheurs autochtones, les auteurs utilisent l’analyse critique du discours pour évaluer la présentation du combat des Wet’suwet’en dans les principaux médias. S’inspirant de la littérature sur la suppression des mouvements sociaux, ils discernent trois thèmes principaux dans des textes qui cherchent à valider l’usage excessif de la force par la GRC contre les défenseurs des terres et à délégitimer la revendication de souveraineté des Wet’suwet’en. Alors que cette présentation a préparé le terrain pour des incursions soutenues de la part d’entreprises, la surveillance policière et l’occupation du territoire non cédé des Wet’suwet’en, les auteurs estiment qu’un angle biaisé ainsi que l’utilisation des médias sociaux par les activistes pour visualiser la répression de l’État peuvent avoir créé les conditions propices à un retour de flamme, selon les termes de Hess et Martin (2006).","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124603890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent work has begun to disaggregate the various forms of literary tourist sites (Fawcett and Cormack 2001), but continues to have a methodological gap surrounding the specifically literary aspects of the practice itself, and—with the notable exception of Green Gables (Squire 1992; Devereux 2001)—has left Canada predictably unexamined. This essay begins with a brief introduction to literary tourism in Canada before moving into a comparative analysis of two National Historic Sites associated with Canadian literary authors: the Robert Service cabin in Dawson City, Yukon, and the John McCrae House in Guelph, Ontario. The sites offer a compelling comparison as the former homes of two of the best-known Canadian poets of the early twentieth century whose works have become popularly synonymous with two of Canada’s most heavily mythologized eras. The enduring popularity of poems like “The Cremation of Sam McGee” reflect not only Service’s central role in mythologizing Canada’s north but also a strategic “cultural commoditization” of the area’s gold rush heritage (Jarvenpa 1994; Grace 2001), while McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” retains its status not only as the “most popular poem” of the First World War in Canada and beyond (Fussell 2000), but also as a primary example of the ideological function of Great War literature within Canada (Holmes 2005; Gordon 2014). Although the two author houses may initially appear a study in contrasts, I draw on recent work in literary tourist studies to argue they are linked in their function as “materialized fictions” (Hendrix 2008), or concrete interpretative frames that aim to offer tangible evidence of the Canadian myths their former inhabitants helped to fashion.Résumé:Longtemps rejeté comme une « erreur cruciale » (Booth 2016) mais encore capable de susciter une « gêne évidente » (Watson 2006) chez des chercheurs par ailleurs heureux de mettre en relief le contexte matériel entourant la circulation des textes, le tourisme littéraire fait depuis peu l’objet de recherches universitaires sérieuses. Des travaux récents ont commencé à désagréger les diverses formes de sites touristiques littéraires (Fawcett et Cormack 2001); toutefois, ces travaux comportent toujours une lacune méthodologique en ce qui concerne les aspects proprement littéraires de la pratique elle-même, et, comme on pouvait s’y attendre, ils ne portent pas sur le Canada, sauf dans le cas notable de Green Gables (Squire 1992; Devereux 2001). While it has largely been remembered as a celebration of Vancouver’s literary culture, more marginalized voices of Vancouver’s literary communities have highlighted the series’ implications for gay male and female writers in the city. This article considers whose time was actually represented by the Writing in Our Time series. I suggest that while it gave gay men the opportunity to be onstage and speak about their concerns, including the homophobic attacks against bill bissett in the House of Commons that prompted the series, Writing in Our Time provided women limited opportunities to publicly share their work while relying upon their invisible labour to succeed. Through the production of a new socio-cultural history of the series, including an analysis of printed publications, oral histories, and audiovisual documentation of the events, this article demonstrates that Writing in Our Time was catalyzed by attacks on a gay writer, relied on women’s invisible labour, showcased the androcentric relations of Vancouver’s literary scene, and sparked resistance from feminists to women’s peripheral position in the series. I argue that, due to their proximity to or distance from heterosexual white males in power within the scene, the series simultaneously supported gay writers in Vancouver’s literary scene and further marginalized women by reinforcing sexist social hierarchies. The effects of these androcentric relations led to greater dialogue about issues affecting gay men within the series and by women about sexism within and outside of the series at that time.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117270861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors were the first representatives of the Canadian state to enter the region, and their narratives positioned Inuit as “better off without civilization.” Various members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) stationed in the region over the subsequent three decades reproduced such discourse. While, at first glance, this discourse seems to attribute a nobility to traditional ways of life, upon closer inspection it actually positions Inuit as incapable of adapting successfully to changing socio-economic circumstances. Methodologically, this article critically reinterprets archival documents from the early agents of colonization in the Kitikmeot. While advancing historical scholarship concerning relations between Inuit and the Canadian state, the article contributes to contemporary agendas of decolonization and reconciliation by enabling a more complete understanding of the origins and nature of colonial rule in the Arctic. By arguing that colonial discourses have roots in local and specific relations of production, the article also contributes to postcolonial theories of efforts to legitimize colonization and represent colonized Others in essentialist and paternalistic terms.Résumé:Entre 1915 et 1920, des membres de la Royale Gendarmerie à cheval du Nord-Ouest (RGCNO) ont écrit quatre grands récits de prise de contact avec des Inuits vivant sur un territoire aujourd’hui connu sous le nom de région de Kitikmeot, au Nunavut. Les auteurs étaient les premiers représentants de l’État canadien à pénétrer dans la région, et leurs récits présentaient les Inuits comme « mieux lotis sans la civilisation ». Divers membres de la Gendarmerie royale du Canada (GRC) en poste dans la région durant les trois décennies suivantes ont répété ce discours. Si, à première vue, celui-ci semble attribuer une certaine noblesse aux modes de vie traditionnels, en y regardant de près, il présente en fait les Inuits comme incapables de s’adapter avec succès à l’évolution socioéconomique. Sur le plan méthodologique, l’article réinterprète de manière critique les documents d’archives des premiers agents de la colonisation dans le Kitikmeot. Tout en faisant progresser la recherche historique sur les relations entre les Inuits et l’État canadien, il contribue aux programmes contemporains de décolonisation et de réconciliation, car il permet de mieux comprendre les origines et la nature de la domination coloniale dans l’Arctique. MacDonald’s distinction between “liberal reconciliation,” which is based on a “shared vison of a harmonious future,” and “transformative reconciliation,” which “is about fundamentally problematizing the settler state as a colonial creation, a vector of cultural genocide, and one that continues inexorably to suppress Indigenous collective aspirations for self-determination and sovereignty” as a critical framework.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125579302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
