In 2015, the Liberal government under Premier Brian Gallant made significant legislative changes to regulation 84-20 to make abortions more easily accessible in the province. Despite these changes, the Liberal government fell short of publicly funding community-based abortions outside hospitals. This qualitative study aimed to examine the political dynamic and pressures explaining why New Brunswick remains behind on abortion access compared to other Canadian provinces. From September until November 2020, we conducted semi-structured in-depth interviews with 22 participants. Participants were a mix of past and present politicians, health care leaders, and high-ranking public officials identified as key stakeholders in the abortion debate in New Brunswick. Some participants shared their challenges separating their personal views on abortions and admitted wanting to limit access to make it difficult for people to get an abortion. At the same time, other participants described concern for the most vulnerable segments of the New Brunswick population who may struggle with accessing abortions, leading to undue stress and anxiety levels. Ultimately, this article describes the challenges politicians face with power dynamics within their parties and the balance between managing political risks to maintain popularity within the New Brunswick electorate without infringing on people’s right to medical care.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129849600","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It engages with the themes of Black solidarities, thought, and the quest for Black freedom, in the interest of recognizing the complexities of its range. In this era of new forms of Black dispersement, the author offered this as a care work in the core character of Blackness. It is a wish for a kind of respite from the ontological over-determinism that bares down on us from all directions, from the restlessness that forms the tenor of our being in this world.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116140445","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A frame analysis informed by critical discourse theory was used to examine 56 English-language articles related to home care (March 2020–March 2021). Home care is often “tacked on” to discussions of long-term residential care and is constructed by what it is not, by what it is a preferred alternative to, and by what it might circumvent (i.e., neglect, contagion). Infused with taken-for-granted meanings and linked to population aging and system crisis, home care is positioned as the progressive future of Canadian eldercare. Although home care investment is a common call, at times the gravity of the problem is imbalanced against small-scale individualistic solutions. Inequities of home spaces and impacts on families are obscured, with homes characterized as idealized places of dignity and (relative) safety. Older adults are positioned as vulnerable, passive victims, in contrast to their benevolent helpers. The authors discuss how we can clarify and strengthen political advocacy and public discourse around eldercare without reinforcing compassionate ageism, apocalyptic demography, and fear of aging while recognizing the nuances around receiving care in either home or residential settings.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133112369","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on an innovative new dataset that was secured through several years of using freedom of information legislation to collect federal and provincial funding data on settlement and integration programs. This study demonstrates, among other things, that there are significant disparities in funding for settlement and integration services among regions within Canada. Funding for immigrant-serving organizations (ISAs) is also concentrated among a small number of organizations. These trends have potential implications for the access and quality of settlement services available to newcomers based on where they land in Canada.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128625000","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, many Canadians were probably fooled by his name and slight Welsh accent into believing he was from good Protestant stock, but his was a secular Judaism, grounded in the social democratic Jewish Labour Bund. This paper argues that, although generally overlooked in the literature, “the single most important person” in the CCF/NDP deeply engrained Bundist values and principles—working-class unity, the centrality of labour unions to political struggle and electoral efforts to agitate for justice and equality for Jews (and all workers), and international solidarity—into the social democratic left in Canada.Résumé:David Lewis n’était pas croyant. En fait, de nombreux Canadiens se sont probablement laissé tromper par son nom et son léger accent gallois: ils ont cru qu’il était de bonne souche protestante, alors qu’il était issu du judaïsme laïc, ancré dans le Mouvement des travailleurs juifs (Jewish Labour Bund) social-démocrate. L’article soutient le fait généralement négligé dans la documentation que « la personne la plus importante » du CCF/NPD a profondément ancré dans la gauche sociale-démocrate au Canada les valeurs et les principes bundistes, soit l’unité de la classe ouvrière, le rôle pivot des syndicats dans la lutte politique et les efforts sur le plan électoral pour faire valoir la justice et l’égalité à l’égard des Juifs (et de tous les travailleurs), ainsi que la solidarité internationale.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126833289","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These restrictions significantly impacted where Canadians spend their time, how they do so and with whom. Prior to the pandemic, people living with dementia (PLWD) and the family members, friends, and neighbours who support their care already encountered physical, health, and social challenges relating to participation in private and public places. Under pandemic conditions, these challenges were magnified and contributed to differences in the ways community was understood and practiced. A rapid research project in the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, exploring COVID-19-related changes to community-based dementia care supports and services highlighted changes toward places of residence, public places, and virtual settings through interviews with unpaid caregivers of PLWD. Findings demonstrated a shift in activities and experiences associated with places during COVID-19 restrictions and lockdown measures. From what home means to community places and virtual places, this article considers the ways in which COVID-19 restrictions and measures are redefining the meanings and significance of places for unpaid caregivers of PLWD in the province of Nova Scotia in Atlantic Canada.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129552581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Relatively less explored in the academic literature is the role of social movements as a site of learning. In this article, the authors synthesize several theoretical frameworks for social movement learning and apply them to extensive fieldwork, in 2009, during Sri Lankan Tamil protests in Toronto and during Indigenous land and water defence in Beausoleil First Nation. They argue that such movements can serve as a powerful educational environment and explore how learning takes place by understanding the sources and sharing of knowledge, how the social identities of participants are consequential for learning, and the underlying social, economic, and political forces that shape movements and their emergence. Ultimately, the authors claim that understanding the learning that takes place in social movements in Canada helps us understand broader political struggles and discourse in the Canadian context and beyond, including critical new forms of solidarity.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"127 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129880898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Outsiders in this collective identity formation are understood to bring more than disease to the province but “anomic infection” itself. Furthermore, the mechanisms of reopening the province are also found in a longstanding and related collective ethos toward hospitality. Finally, the problematic post-pandemic dynamics of established group identity formation are examined.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114537906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Following sensitive political events, Quebec saw many battles over secularism and religious pluralism. A series of debates were enmeshed with political debates about the true meaning of secularism and embroiled with fear of religion and immigrants. This ethnographic inquiry maps out the existing tendencies during different periods of repercussions and tensions around Quebec’s secularism. The article outlines key clustering patterns and ethicoreligious hierarchies and their genesis while responding to the 2013 Charter of Values of Quebec, the debates on the 2014 attacks against Canadian soldiers by presumed ISIS members in Canada, and the 2019 secularism law, Bill 21, adopted by the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government in June 2019. The fieldwork was conducted between May 2013 and June 2020 and is based on 44 events and interviews with major key participants (Catholics, Muslims, Secularists) in Montreal. The main findings show that the dynamics behind the incongruities within social groups appear to be generating overlapping alliances; while discourses of many groups seem to be unified in appearance, they are divided into many layers, which serves the purpose of opposing or supporting the government’s policies and legislation. Partnerships created in such conditions remain ephemeral, restrained with an allegiance to the same political tendency, and controlled by cultural or ideological homogeneity. Furthermore, there is more hate and violence when perpetrators believe that they benefit from anonymity.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132411303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The article reframes her grief through the lens of maternal sufferation to explore a distinctly Jamaican reality in a transnational context. Burnett was one of 52 people who died by gun violence in what became known as “The Year of the Gun.” In an extensive interview with Holder about the life and death of her youngest child, Toronto Star reporter Jim Rankin addresses the forms of structural violence that contributed to the conditions that led to Burnett’s demise. Reading her narrative from a Black feminist perspective, the author explores the politics of Holder’s mothering practices to keep her children safe. Her narrative is located in the scholarship on Black motherhood in the African diaspora, focused on the exigencies of the afterlife of slavery. Cecile Holder’s reality is particular to her circumstances. Yet, her experience as a Black Jamaican mother in the Canadian racial state provides a snapshot of the quotidian navigations that frame women’s parenting practices at the nexus of structural violence and the demands of the global economy unique to African-Caribbean women.","PeriodicalId":265433,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Canadian Studies/Revue d'études canadiennes","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130961685","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
