To this end, 70 candidates were surveyed. Furthermore, their job applications were assessed and analyzed, employing the Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC; an often-used program for dictionary-based, automatic quantitative text analysis). With a higher IP expression, a differentiated picture emerges with regard to the application profile: The linguistic profile tends toward a more cautious, more specific and also justifying language. However, for many of the assumed LIWC variables, no correlations were found. It is thought that this might be attributed to the high level of standardization of application documents. Furthermore, this research showed that, at least to some extent, candidates with a higher IP level put more effort into their application and at the same time considered their chances of success to be lower. Conclusions regarding the use of language as a marker of IP expression and implications for the “imposter applicant” are discussed.","PeriodicalId":263823,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift für Psychologie","volume":"749 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141707520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Automated essay scoring (AES) can alleviate this by automating the process, thereby reducing human effort. However, the multitude of AES models, each varying in its features and scoring approaches, complicates selecting one optimal model, especially when evaluating diverse content-related aspects across multiple rating items. Therefore, we propose a hierarchical rater model-based approach to integrate predictions from multiple AES models, accounting for their distinct scoring behaviors. We investigated its performance on data from a university essay writing test. The proposed method achieved accuracy that was comparable to the best individual AES model. This is a promising result because it additionally reduced the amount of differential item functioning between human and automated scoring and thus established a higher degree of measurement invariance compared to the individual AES models.","PeriodicalId":263823,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift für Psychologie","volume":"101 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141714270","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over 1,900 abstracts were annotated into two categories: positive results only and mixed or negative results. Model performance was evaluated on three benchmarks. The best-performing model was utilized to analyze trends in over 20,000 psychotherapy study abstracts. SciBERT outperformed all benchmarks and random forest in in-domain and out-of-domain data. The trend analysis revealed nonsignificant effects of publication year on positive results for 1990–2005, but a significant decrease in positive results between 2005 and 2022. When examining the entire time span, significant positive linear and negative quadratic effects were observed. Machine learning could support future efforts to understand patterns of positive results in large data sets. The fine-tuned SciBERT model was deployed for public use.","PeriodicalId":263823,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift für Psychologie","volume":"290 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141692150","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previous research focused on top-level political leaders and word-counting methods. We examined We-language and reelection success based on 349,783 speeches from 3,630 members of the German federal parliament from 1949 to 2021. We combined traditional We-counts with new Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools to explore syntactic and semantic contexts. We-language predicted next-term reelections and total number of reelections from the frontbench to the backbench and across many social and political factors. There were differential effects for We-language versus Our-language, We-specification, and We-categories. Our study revealed an upward trend of We-language in the parliament in recent decades. This research illustrates the use of new large-scale speech datasets and NLP-based tools for language and leadership research. We give valuable insights into the subtle language behind successful leadership.","PeriodicalId":263823,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift für Psychologie","volume":"18 7","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141700040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate how response behavior can be altered by means of survey design. In a survey on tutoring courses, 3,183 students responded to OEI. Participants were randomly assigned to conditions with or without a motivational cue and with OEI positioned at the beginning or the end of the survey, respectively. We simultaneously inspected response rates and answer lengths using Bayesian multilevel hurdle models. Positioning at the beginning enhanced response rates but reduced answer lengths. The motivational cue raised response rates only at the end of the survey. We also applied two different topic modeling approaches. Resulting topics cover different aspects of teacher behavior and positioning slightly altered the content of the responses. Based on motivational and cognitive theories, we address both the design of questionnaires and analysis approaches to OEI responses.","PeriodicalId":263823,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift für Psychologie","volume":"72 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141692955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding the effect of this multiattributional diversity on CSCL groups is necessary to inform the design of interventions aimed at managing CSCL group diversity. We used topic modeling to investigate how multiattributional diversity affects discussion topics and subsequent group performance. Twenty topics were derived by Latent Dirichlet Allocation and assigned to 17,720 forum posts by 342 groups of psychology freshmen. Multiattributional sociodemographic diversity was negatively related to the number of posts in two topics concerned with time management and feedback mechanisms in groups where multiattributional task-related diversity was also high. These topics were positively related to subsequent group performance ratings. Findings suggest that this combination of diversity presents a risk for group communication, potentially negatively impacting performance.","PeriodicalId":263823,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift für Psychologie","volume":"156 20 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141706302","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

VOTAT, altering a single variable while keeping others constant, was examined through a dual approach: an empirical analysis with MicroDYN tasks and a theoretical discussion. Empirically, we identified differences among participants who fully engaged in the VOTAT loop, those with incomplete loops, and nonusers. These distinctions were evident in their problem-solving approaches, hypothesis formulation, and decision-making efficiency. Theoretically, we contextualized VOTAT's role within epistemic activities, extending its application beyond the specific tasks in our study. Our findings reveal that VOTAT's use markedly impacts problem-solving processes, demonstrating varied cognitive strategies among different participant groups. This has implications for understanding problem-solving cognition and designing tasks that better capture the nuances of epistemic activities.","PeriodicalId":263823,"journal":{"name":"Zeitschrift für Psychologie","volume":"703 ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140784281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
