The project is in the framework of the programme SCOPES 2010-2013 (Scientific co-operation between Eastern Europe and the Switzerland) of the Swiss National Science Foundation. The tri-national collaboration involves two SCOPES partner countries - Bulgaria and Macedonia - and Switzerland in an active joint work. The subsequent application of the project outcomes in the three partner universities will result in a inter-university european network for modern engineer's education and training in micro-nanoelectronics, with the coordination and active support of the Haute Ecole d'Ingénierie et de Gestion du Canton de Vaud (HEIG-VD), University of Applied Sciences and Arts Western Switzerland.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126321860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Even with over 10 years of experience in teaching the fiber optic course, the authors found it very difficult to clearly describe the principle of FTTH network to students, mainly because electricity and light are not visible. To overcome the difficulties and limitations, we developed a custom animation of the FTTH concept to teach that subject more efficiently. The custom animation software consists of the ability to create and animate FTTH network by showing the data flow and conversion. To carry out this study, we interviewed 31 students in Department of Electrical, Electronic and System Engineering, National University of Malaysia as respondents. The study revealed that 45% of respondents strongly agree and 55% of respondents agree that FTTH animations are more understandable than conventional lectures. 68% of respondents strongly agree and 29% of respondents agree that they like to study FTTH using animations. Furthermore, 58% of respondents strongly agree and 39% of respondents agree that they could remember FTTH network very well using animation learning.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127147721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main goal of the paper is a comparative analysis of the data obtained from the initial questionnaire based on Felder-Silverman learning style model and the data from the user model and domain model of our AEHS system TeleEDUCOS. Results of the analysis indicate the correspondence of these two approaches, which leads to conclusion that information about the users' learning styles should be taken into account when designing AEHS systems with the aim of improving efficiency in adapting and presenting of educational material to the users as well as the effectiveness of the learning process supported by AEHS system.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"230 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134591983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The learner sometimes cannot recognize the motion well or cannot mimic the motion well by the method, because learner's viewpoint is always located outside of the expert's motion and sometimes the viewpoint is fixed. To solve this problem, we propose and develop a skill learning environment for posture and motion with life-size bone model using augmented reality. We evaluated the effect of the learning environment by an experiment.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125110451","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Though the up scaling of numbers as well as the involvement of some of the most prestigious universities in the world distinguish MOOCs from most online courses run at European universities, they have enough in common to justify such a comparison. We argue that both teachers and students need special incentives in order to keep them at online teaching and learning in the long run. As the experience at the University of Freiburg shows, content production can be done as the spin-off result of normal teaching, if no cost-covering fees for online education can be charged.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123983179","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we investigate the motivation of graduate students to pursue doctoral studies specifically in Computer Science. We interviewed 63 doctoral students, from two different doctoral models (traditional and structured) in Finland and Austria, on their initial reasons and experiences that led them to enroll in doctoral studies. We identified five disjoint main motivational drivers that relate with different aspects of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Together with a measure of the strength of their initial motivation, we develop clear motivation profiles of different doctoral program models. We observed that students in structured programs were mainly driven by extrinsic motivation while participants in traditional European doctoral studies were mainly influenced by intrinsic factors. Our results give a practical overview of student motivation for the enhancement of student selection, support, and supervision processes in doctoral programs.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116376839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the system behind this approach is usually hard to produce, being strongly domain-dependent and for this reason difficult to port on other domains. Here we present the design of a domain-independent training system based on simulation environments, capable to be reused in different domains and especially in the industrial ones, saving costs considerably. The main idea behind the system design is the separation between the domain logic and the trainer role. This distinction is achieved by the adoption of a modular and flexible agent-based system approach. We present a first case study for training advanced technicians to learn maintenance procedures for complex medium tension equipments.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130514967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They perceive also to be controllers of their progresses with respect to calendars, fruition, assessment results. Students come into the MOOC environments to develop or enhance professional competences, to earn formative credits and to achieve certifications to get more employment opportunities, but the statistics underline high level of drop-out and few released useful credits and final certifications. These problems are mainly related to the difficulty to guarantee the “teaching presence” in courses with thousands of learners having different background and to the ineffective assessment methods for a meaningful learning process looking at the objectives and giving feedbacks for individual learning paths construction. The work, in particular, exploits the adaptation and personalization features of IWT platform in order to provide ARWE (Adaptive Remedial Work Environment) in order to fill the lack of a one-to-one tutoring mitigating the drop-out problem in MOOCs. The main original contribution of this work concerns the definition of an approach to automatically generate quizzes, exploiting a semantic-based method, in order to populate the e-Testing tool existing in ARWE, decreasing, de facto, the effort for instructors in the assessment authoring phase.","PeriodicalId":261564,"journal":{"name":"2013 12th International Conference on Information Technology Based Higher Education and Training (ITHET)","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131435772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
