Statistical analyses are conducted on the occurrence of Japanese politeness markers found in the script of the movie Tokyo Story directed by Yasujiro Ozu in 1953. Results notably confirm the highly significant correlation between age, gender and the use of keigo, women and younger speakers using consistently more politeness markers than men and older speakers, even though Japanese polite speech does not seem to reflect the order of magnitude derived from the age difference numeric value but only the acknowledgement of one interactant’s seniority. \u0000The study also delves into the distinction between the mere presence of keigo in discourse and its intensity of use in actual speech (i.e. number of politeness markers), revealing complex relationships. For example, same-sex dyads exhibit different patterns of politeness, with men-to-men politeness associated more with the former and women-to-women politeness more with the latter. The interplay between age and gender in keigo use seems to defy systematic rules, highlighting the importance of considering unique gender- and age-based pairings, in other words: distinct categories of address styles that are both interrelated and individual.","PeriodicalId":261061,"journal":{"name":"International Linguistics Research","volume":" 34","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141375189","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Scholars are intrigued by ChatGPT’s text data handling, yet its application in rhetorical move analysis remains largely unexplored. Therefore, the objective of this study is to investigate the ability of GPT-4 in the identification of rhetorical moves employed in the abstracts of tourism research articles indexed in Scopus. The essentiality of moves was also reported. Additionally, this research seeks to compare the accuracy of GPT-4’s analysis with that of humans. Adopting Hyland’s (2000) five-move model, the results indicated that GPT-4 analyzes moves more quickly but less accurately than human experts, and the four principal types of errors committed by GPT-4 include redundancy/over-count, unmatched categorization, incorrect sequence, and vague identification. The findings also revealed that Move 2 (Purpose) and Move 4 (Findings) are obligatory with a 100% essentiality rate through both GPT-4 and human analysis. Differences arise in certain steps of Move 1 (Introduction), Move 3 (Methods), and Move 5 (Conclusion), where GPT-4 often sees higher essentiality rates. This study shed light on the testament to AI’s current capabilities in move analysis in academic discourse.","PeriodicalId":261061,"journal":{"name":"International Linguistics Research","volume":"56 38","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141384193","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The field of psychology, with its primary focus on clinical modes of discourse, has historically been the only one to undertake research in the area of addiction. Developing an effective treatment strategy for addiction is a very different challenge than merely comprehending the nature of addiction itself, especially if we add technology to the equation. However, if philosophy is able to contribute to such an understanding, then it may not be owing just to the insightful musings of philosophers, but rather to the increasingly provocative nature of the problem, issue, or even reality that is being investigated. It is possible that addiction is more of a forerunner of shifting cultural horizons and a symbol of an impending (human) crisis than it is merely a medical or clinical condition. If this is the case, then addiction is indicative of an impending crisis. By presenting a point of entrance to this historical fork in the road, it is possible that the subject of addiction can become debatable, or in other words, transform into a philosophical conundrum. This paper is trying to give in insight of the thin line between need and addiction in using technology.","PeriodicalId":261061,"journal":{"name":"International Linguistics Research","volume":"19 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139211505","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the results of the teaching many times did not meet our expectations. Therefore, this research aims to find a possible better way of teaching EFL by considering the students’ multiple intelligence (MI). A quantitative method of ex post facto design was conducted. The data were collected from the students of EFL learners studying English in the Department of English Education, Cenderawasih University, consisting of 236 students as the subject of the research. The data analysis used a non-parametric test, Kruskal Wallis, to compare the groups’ scores. The result shows that there is no significant difference in performance among the groups of MI. This result suggests that MI does not influence EFL learners’ English performance. This might be caused by the teaching strategies practiced by the lecturers who did not consider MI in their teaching processes. Therefore it is suggested to conduct further comprehensive research on the influence of multiple intelligence-based teaching on the performance of students with higher levels of English ability and or on the adult EFL learners.","PeriodicalId":261061,"journal":{"name":"International Linguistics Research","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124789933","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gan's \"Utballa\" as an example of romantic prose and, at the same time, the presence of ethnographic elements in the novels gives grounds to speak of \"ethnographic romanticism\". Romantic poetics demonstrated a strong interest in national originality of the people. This explains the presence of ethnographic elements in the novels, which describe the way of life of foreign ethnic groups (Cheremis and Kalmyks), customs, rituals, traditions and their mythology, and which function in the novels in different ways: in \"Sernyi Kluch\" they help create a romantic twoworld and its \"peak\" - the main character's character, whereas in \"Utballa\" ethnographic elements create an image of a diverse world full of vicissitudes, in which a real man in the guise of a woman preserves her deep spirituality to the end. The novels of Durova and Gan investigate the similarities and differences in the representation of the image of a foreign ethnic group and the archetype of national consciousness. The stories have much in common, which is due to the gender peculiarities embodied through ethnographic images. Ethnographic elements allow one to see a people and its traditions in all their identity and beauty. In the novels, ethnography is used as a leading expressive medium, providing information on the mentality of the people, their moral norms and national history. In their everyday scenes and pictures, the authors saturate the narration with folk tales that are an integral part and essential element of the characterization of the hero. The description of everyday life is given in realistic tones (rituals of religious services, weddings) and filled with rich colours and vivid details. The life of the people, legends, nature and people's characters merge, conveying the uniqueness of everyday life and a vivid picture of life. Ethnography is a marker of national culture that develops under specific conditions that define its uniqueness: long-established customs and habits, moral notions, everyday life, etc., and it reflects and explains through fiction the realities of life and the characters of its characters as typical representatives of a particular nation. Understanding the life and culture of the people is always based on the writer's life experience and fiction.","PeriodicalId":261061,"journal":{"name":"International Linguistics Research","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114307868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A Discourse Completion Test (DCT) consisting of three situations reflecting the three different combinations of power status (high-low, low-high, and equal) was used to collect the data. To have a comprehensive account of the impact of gender, four groups of participants (Male®Male, Male®Female, Female®Female and Female®Male) were included. Each group consisted of 40 participants. The collected data were compared and analyzed using Maíz-Arévalo’s (2014) taxonomy of disagreement strategies. The data analysis revealed two patterns; firstly, when there was no power distance between interlocuters or when the speaker expressing disagreement had a higher power position than the addressee, gender appeared to have an impact on the choice of disagreement strategies by the speakers of SCA. When disagreeing with the same gender, both male and female speakers of SCA tended to use strong disagreement strategies but mitigated disagreement strategies when disagreeing with the other gender; and secondly, when the speaker expressing disagreement had a lower power position than the addressee, the gender of either the speaker or the addressee did not seem to have an impact on the choice of disagreement strategies. In this pattern, power appeared to be the decisive factor which both male and female speakers of SCA tended to use in mitigated disagreement strategies regardless of the gender of the addressee.","PeriodicalId":261061,"journal":{"name":"International Linguistics Research","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114359234","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research investigates the usage of hedges and boosters in research articles from three disciplines: engineering, social science, and midwifery. This study carries three issues: what are the language forms of hedges and boosters in abstracts of journal articles of multi-disciplinary science at Tulungagung University, how often hedges and boosters are used and how their meaning reflects the writer's level of assurance in the information given. The research design used in this study is descriptive-qualitative. The data taken were from in the past five years (from 2017 to 2022) as its primary sources of data. The researcher used random sampling and took ten articles of each science. There were thirty papers contributed by the lecturers who submitted their journal articles to the Tulungagung University repository (https://repository.unita.ac.id/). This study concluded that abstracts of journal articles in midwifery science were the highest among the other sciences. The second most used of hedges was also found in engineering sciences and the lowest usage was from social science. This finding is not relevant to (Vázquez Orta & Giner, 2008) conclusion that Hedging is more common in disciplines driven by socially manufactured, abstract data and less often in fields driven by real data. The findings of this study generally validated Salager- Meyer's assertion that it is crucial and extremely important to be able to navigate scientific language. In contrary, the highest booster frequencies were found in social science, and then the second was in midwifery science. The lowest was in engineering science. It appears that the boosters are being used to convey a high level of confidence in the conclusions that can be drawn from the outcomes of the study that was carried out. In other instances, the boosters appear to serve as rhetorical devices that are designed to express the author's view as if it were self-evident or as if it were a commonly acknowledged thought or truth. In social science which the author writes more argumentatively, boosters were needed to convey their ideas or opinions much more.","PeriodicalId":261061,"journal":{"name":"International Linguistics Research","volume":"12 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126102128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
