The plays were investigated keeping in view Mills (1995) three echelons of enquiry: lexis, syntax, and discourse. Soyinka’s plays are masterfully carved to expose the suppression of women by men. In these plays, female characters are represented through withering words and phrases, which presages their disapproval and also their voluptuous accessibility and attractiveness. Women are represented through a sexist and hidebound lingo. They are rendered as malevolent, deleterious, and calamitous, as they are only credited with transporting hitches to the lives of men. They are presented as creatures of the scrubland, ferocious, barbarous, unschooled, and stumpy. These deleterious attributes were given to them with a direct implication of their subordination by their male counterparts. Also, they are represented as receivers of actions, since men carry out most of the demanding tasks/actions in the plays in comparison to women. Following transitivity choices, this article concludes that men carry out actions and women are acted upon. They are given prosaic jobs such as homemakers, paltry traders, hawkers, child bearers, and caregivers to their husbands and children, whereas men are given more important roles such as schoolmasters and chiefs. Women are not given these arduous roles, as the patriarchy perceives that they are not capable of carrying out those roles because of their emotions and simple mindset. Finally, the article recommends further research with the aim of advancing and improving the representation of women in Nigerian drama.   \u0000Keywords: discourse, feminist stylistics, focalization, fragmentation, lexis,  patriarchy, semantic derogation, sexism, syntax, transitivity choices","PeriodicalId":257118,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication and Cultural Trends","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128036730","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Still, it is not given adequate attention in Pakistan, where language proficiency is mostly a matter of developing expertise in writing skills. The education system in Pakistan is highly teacher-centered. It is based on delivering instructions through traditional methods that compel students to do nothing but merely listen to the lecture, passively. Later on, they are evaluated solely on the basis of their performance in the written exam. This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness and challenges of introducing learner autonomy in developing writing skills at intermediate level in ESL classrooms in Punjab, Pakistan. Learner autonomy works in three major areas. Firstly, it aims at enhancing the effectiveness of learning in short- and long-term language learning contexts. Secondly, it lowers the barriers between language learners and learning contexts. Thirdly, it transforms language learners into useful and effective individuals. The research sample comprised the intermediate students of Sialkot district. For the current study, a total of 120 female students of intermediate were selected. Experimental research design was used. The students were divided into two groups: control and experimental. Control group was taught the lecture using the existing teacher-centered approach. Experimental group was taught through autonomous activities using student-centered approach in order to develop learner autonomy in them. Lesson plans were designed and paired sample t-test was employed for the analysis of pre-tests and post-tests . The results revealed that the students of control group, who were taught by the lecture method, showed better results in their post-tests. On the contrary, students of experimental group, who were taught using a student-centered approach to develop learner autonomy, showed a remarkably small growth in their post-tests. The researchers observed that there was relatively low harmony and collaboration in between students and teachers, while pursuing for learner autonomy. They also conducted participants’ observations and interviews for data triangulation. They observed that most of the teachers do not want to promote learner autonomy and remain stuck with the traditional lecture method in order to ensure the success of the participants in written examination. The current research will help the teachers and students to remove the barriers and promote learner autonomy for the real acquisition of the English language. \u0000Keywords: English as Second Language (ESL), lecture method, learner autonomy, student-centered approach","PeriodicalId":257118,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication and Cultural Trends","volume":"2015 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114444166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, the success of peacebuilding depends, at least in part, on individuals’ life writings that allow them to put their past tainted by war and its horrors behind them and offer them future possibilities of reconciliation and peace. The study of the life writing (memoirs) ‘East Pakistan to Bangladesh’ by Saadullah Khan was used as a test case in this research paper to support this argument. The critical framework of Decolonizing Trauma Theory given by Rothberg (2009) was used in this qualitative study to explore how the writer, who not only fought in the civil war in Bangladesh but was also taken as a prisoner of war, moves beyond a cycle of retaliation to something more constructive. The objective is to explore how, after facing the horrors of war, human beings can feel compassion for antagonists and offer alternative narratives divergent from the official narrative. An analysis of the war imagery demonstrates that the writer does not use it to create a meta-conflict to legitimize war, demonizing the enemy to justify the killings and polarizing us versus them as good and evil as a means for dealing with the conflict. Rather, he uses war imagery as an organizing principle, determining and impacting people’s response to the world and the war with a new perception and comprehension that emphasizes the factors of contingency and ambiguity. This approach enables him to eschew blame. Hence, he does not attribute the causes of conflict to the members of the out-group, thus suggesting possibilities of transformation and peace, rather than ascertaining factors such as the nature of the enemy that suggests the impossibility of peace. Since the past decade, it has been theorized that the Malay language of Nusantara region, now Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, Philippines, Singapore, Southern Thailand and other Southeast Asian nations originated from the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) language family. The Malay language is spoken by the Malays in Southeast Asia. However, due to the sporadic nature of Southeast Asia consisting of chains of numerous islands and islets, the Malay language has developed and evolved across various localities, islands, and regions. In Philippines alone, there are 7, 641 islands and islets and the country is home to more than 150 languages, which all evolved from the Austronesian (Malayo-Polynesian) language family. The Maranao language is one of the major languages of the Philippines. Maranao is the lingua franca of the Maranaos in Mindanao island. Whereas, Bahasa Melayu or Malay is the language of the Malays in Brunei Darussalam. To pave the pace with the agenda of the research, the research was carried out using ethnography as a research method to find out the similar words between the Maranao language and Bahasa Melayu. It also explores the expression of ideology by Imran Khan after his victory in the general election of 2018. The convincing strategies are explored in this article which Khan exploited in his speech to persuade the people of Pakistan. The study identified different elements of political power in the said speech. This study is qualitative and utilizes the rhetoric of Aristotle, that is, pathos, ethos, and logos. It also explored the prediction strategy, positive self-portrayal and negative depiction of other politicians as manifested by the choice of personal pronouns by Imran Khan to change the political views and perception of the masses. The study revealed the intentional crafting of victory speech using the model of Aristotelian rhetoric and the application of the strategies of positive predication and self-appraisal, as well as the negative portrayal of opponent parties to persuade the public to support Imran Khan’s political agenda. \u0000Keywords: Aristotle, ideology, negative, persuasive and rhetorical techniques, positive, rhetoric","PeriodicalId":257118,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication and Cultural Trends","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125972460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, their names are formulated using various word-formation processes. To understand their role in naming homeopathic medicines, morphological analysis is required.  Hence, the current study scrutinized the process of naming homeopathic medicines to identify the occurrence of recurrent linguistic patterns.  For this purpose, names of homeopathic medicines were randomly selected from companies such as Paul Brooks, Kamal Laboratories, and Dr Masood Homeopathic Pharmaceutical. The names of the medicine were analysed using the Onomasiological Theory of English Word-Formation by Pavol Stekauer. Using this theory, the morphological domain of the given medicine names along with their commercial purposes was identified and explored extensively. A major cause of language death across the world is language shift (Dweik & Al-Refai, 2015; Campbell, 1994). Pakistan is home to various ethnicities and languages. Many indigenous languages are spoken in Pakistan; however, with English being the official language and Urdu being the national language, many minority languages face the risk of extinction, as language shift towards the more dominant languages occurs in the indigenous communities of the country. This paper aims to investigate the process of language shift and language maintenance among Dhatki and Marwari speaking youth living in Hyderabad, Pakistan. The participants were students and recent graduates of the University of Sindh, Jamshoro. A total of 10 Dhatki speakers and 10 Marwari speakers were interviewed for this study. Semi-structured interviews were administered to collect in-depth information about their language proficiency, language use in various domains, language representation and language attitude. The findings of the study revealed that Dhatki and Marwari languages are used in home settings for various functions. These indigenous languages, however, are not used in educational institutions. Moreover, traditional and digital media representation of these languages is quite limited. Dhatki and Marwari speaking youth, nonetheless, are proud of their ethnic and linguistic heritage and continue to make efforts to maintain their language in various domains. \u0000Keywords: Dhatki, language maintenance, language shift, Marwari, youth","PeriodicalId":257118,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication and Cultural Trends","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125660084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, there have been limited work done to see how a woman portrays another woman in her writings. Moreover, there have been limited research conducted utilizing corpus tools for the analysis of gynocriticism. Thus, the present research aims to examine The Color Purple by Alice Walker by employing the corpus-based approach to investigate the representation of female character by the author in the novel. The positive or negative portrayal of women by the author in the novel was investigated through author’s usage of adjectives. Showalter's (2009) Theory of Gynocriticsim was used as a theoretical framework for the current research. Further, corpus-based methodology was employed to analyze how Alice Walker has portrayed the female character in her novel through the use of adjectives. An in-depth analysis has shown that Alice Walker has depicted woman as a helpless and sidelined being who can be turned as a resilient after suffering from frightful circumstances. The current research also opens new gates for the researchers to analyze the text from Gynocriticial perspective along with corpus techniques. \u0000Keywords: Adjectives; Corpus-based analysis; Gynocriticsim; The Color Purple; Woman \u0000 ","PeriodicalId":257118,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication and Cultural Trends","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134229795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main purpose of the study is to show that exocentric compounds are very productive in the Indo -European languages. The current study claims that every exocentric compound is metaphoric in nature. Every constituent in an exocentric compound carries several  interpretations based on specific metonymic relations and  cultural knowledge. The meaning of one constituent aids and activates the interpretation of another constituent.   In this paper*, only four examples of NN compounds are discussed in detail. Although the study is not a comparative analysis in actual sense, however, the formations of such compounds in English  are also analyzed to show the applicability of the mechanism in other languages as well. The results revealed that the above mechanism is equally applicable in both the languages and supports the metaphoric interpretation in exocentric compounds.
