Three types of integration can exist in professional programs: ( 1 ) teaching of applied theory; (2) application of applied theory to an analysis of specific settings; and (3) use of applied theory in specific settings. The appropriate kind of theory in library and information science is applied or practical theory, i.e., it focuses on the design of procedures for the effective performance of professional tasks. Researchers in library and information science should give priority to the development of applied theory, since all types of integration of theory and practice depend on the existence of applied theory.","PeriodicalId":256869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of education for librarianship","volume":"581 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134453806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These problems are now widely recognized in all segments of the scientific and technical community: the universities, government, and private industry. To help alleviate these problems, millions of dollars have been spent by the federal government in research on information retrieval -and in the design and operation of information centers and services. It is extremely unfortunate, therefore, that, as a number of recent studies have convincingly demonstrated, large segments of the scientific and technical community do not make use of national information services and, indeed, are largely unaware of the existence of these resources.1* 2> 3 This is true not only of on-demand services such as retrospective search, but also of widely-available published bibliographic products. Earlier studies (e.g., by Martyn4) have revealed that librarians and other information specialists are consulted comparatively little by research scientists in the course of their information gathering. Some scientists and technologists, while aware of the existence of information services, do not use them because of misconceptions relating to their","PeriodicalId":256869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of education for librarianship","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133933912","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As in past years, the writer is indebted to the deans and directors of the A.L.A. accredited programs for sharing with him the sensitive data on which these statistics are based. The list of schools for 1978-79 is longer than for any previous year because of the favorable decisions of the Committee on Accreditation during the A.L.A. 1979 Midwinter meeting regarding four programs that had not appeared on the accredited list for 1977-78: Alberta, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, and San Jose. The closing of the program at the University of Oregon, however, has reduced the net gain to three, for a total of 67 accredited programs in 1979. The head of each of these 67 library schools responded to the writer's request for faculty data, although two (Brigham Young and Chicago), because of institutional rules on the revelation of individual salaries, omitted that item in their response. Data were requested on all full-time faculty, including deans and directors, as of January 1, 1979, whose total salaries were part of the library school's budget. The names of faculty were not requested, of course. In addition to individuals' salaries (whether for the academic year or the fiscal year), their faculty rank, sex, tenure status, and whether they pos-","PeriodicalId":256869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of education for librarianship","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131096901","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study pulls together much of the information on the topic that is scattered among several general headings in Library Literature. A chronological presentation beginning with events in the 1920's when the Association of American Universities recommended a two-year master's in library science, going through events surrounding the creation of the fifth year master's, and continuing to the creation and planning of present day two year programs shows that there has been a steady progression from training for a library career to education for a profession. Content has gradually been compacted into the first half of the training period and new content continuously added in the second half, until the confines of a single year program have been outgrown. It is suggested that the two-year program may be the next step in the progression. Advantages and disadvantages of two-year programs for students, faculty, and libraries are discussed.","PeriodicalId":256869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of education for librarianship","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132629147","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
