Many of the respondents were also interviewed. Despite the differences between the United Kingdom and the U.S. in higher education, the status of library education and the avenues to professional status, the findings over-all show that, in a majority of respects, there is a substantial similarity between the British and American teachers. There are, however, several important differences in the percentages of the two groups having (1) collegiate education; (2) formal academic professional education; (3) public and academic library experience; (4) memberships in non-library academic associations; (5) \"high\" teaching loads; and (6) records of extensive publication. The probable causes and the possible effects of these and some of the other differences are suggested.","PeriodicalId":256869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of education for librarianship","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114511926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This phase is important in drawing more and possibly better students into the library schools and the profession. An attempt is made here to evaluate these responses through a survey. The author wrote to the 44 library schools accredited by the American Library Association and to 11 non-accredited schools.* Each school received a general inquiry on a postcard, without mention of age, and a letter, which stated that the applicant was 41 years old. The postcards and letters were mailed, from different addresses, February 15, 190, and the last day replies were considered was March 31, 1969. The schools were grouped according to size of enrollment, area of the country, and type of support (private, public). Only the significant figures relating to these groupings will be mentioned below. Some data will be compared to that included in an unpublished survey conducted by Normand Dumont, Shirley Edsall, and Annmarie Hug in 1955. Catalogs usually contain such information as admission requirements, history of the school, graduate study requirements, courses offered, fees, faculty, and financial aids, information used by inquirers","PeriodicalId":256869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of education for librarianship","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130167341","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Assumptions about competency-based education are stated and its limitations for graduate level training are explored. The integration of a competency-based media specialist program and the more theoretical general graduate program requires constant vigilance. SINCE 1976, Syracuse University has been involved in the continuing development of a competency-based program for school media specialists.1 This joint program bridges two different schools on campus - the School of Education through its program in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation and the School of Information Studies. In neither school is the media specialist program the major thrust. In neither school is there a primary commitment to competency-based education or to the school library media specialist program. A basic premise is that the media specialist program should be integrated into both schools as completely as possible so that it can draw strength from the ongoing intellectual thrust of the schools and also so that the media program can contribute its unique approach in a mutually beneficial relationship.","PeriodicalId":256869,"journal":{"name":"Journal of education for librarianship","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130455898","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
