Some species have been found to be pathogenic to humans in addition to their normal distribution. There is no research on the prevalence of FLA in various water sources in Makkah city that we are aware of. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of FLA from various water sources in a different part of the city. A total of 86 water samples were processed and cultured with Escherichia coli overlay on non-nutrient agar medium (NNA). Microscopic examination was used to examine the samples. Fifty (58.1%) of the 86 samples tested were positive for FLA. Amoebae identified by morphology belonging to the genus Acanthamoeba were 30 (34.9%) and that belonging to the genus Naegleria, were 20 (23.3%). Among the positive cases, 100% of ponds, 80% of air conditioner exhaust, 50% of water fountains and tape water filters, 40% of swimming pools and 33.3% of stored tanks. The absence of FLA in the examined wells was a striking feature. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) on DNA showed a 229-bps fragment using Nelson primers and a 500-bps fragment using Acanthamoeba genus-specific primer pair JDP1/JDP2. In conclusion, Acanthamoeba spp. was the most predominant type of free-living amoeba and more prevalent in ponds water absent in wells as shown by culture, microscopy and PCR.","PeriodicalId":256236,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Umm Al-Qura University for Medical Sciences","volume":"590 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121366934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A cross-sectional self- administered questionnaire was conducted from September to October 2018 at the College of Medicine in Qassim University. The survey was designed to assess their circadian rhythm habit, academic performance and Body mass index (BMI). The circadian rhythm habit was evaluated using the morningness-eveningness questionnaire (MEQ). Results: The analysis of the BMI with MEQ scores revealed a significant relationship between circadian rhythm habit and BMI (p-value 0.016). The majority of normal weight students fall in intermediate category (71%). Among overweight category 20.5% of the participants fall in moderate evening while 10.3% of the students fall in moderate morning. All the definite morning participant were underweight. There were 126 (62.1%) male students, and 77 (37.9%) female students. For academic performance there were 80 students (39.4%) who had “high” performance, 64 students (31.5%) had “good” performance, 32 students (15.8%) had “normal” performance and 2 students (1%) had “low” performance. Conclusion: This study revealed several sleep dimensions such as sleep-wake schedules, and individual circadian rhythms characteristics may be associated to the deranged BMI and academic results achieved by university students.","PeriodicalId":256236,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Umm Al-Qura University for Medical Sciences","volume":"93 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122781515","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several risk factors have been reported as determinants of the onset of thyroid cancer. However, an association of menstrual and reproductive factors with thyroid cancer has not been completely explored in Saudi female patients with thyroid carcinoma. Objective: This study was designed to investigate an association of menstrual and reproductive factors with thyroid cancer in Saudi female patients. Methods: This is a case control study performed in Qassim University affiliated hospitals. The 90 Saudi females with thyroid cancer and 178 normal human controls of the same age groups were included. All participants were requested to complete a questionnaire based on their menstrual and reproductive history. Results: The analysis showed no statistically significant association between variables of mean age of menarche, current status of menopause, pattern of menstrual cycles, mean duration of menstrual cycle, mean age at first pregnancy, mean number of pregnancies, mean number of deliveries, mean number of live births, family planning methods used (intrauterine devices, used injectable and used oral contraceptives) and thyroid cancer. Conclusions: This is the first comprehensive study, to the best for our knowledge, from Qassim region of Saudi Arabia that demonstrates that menstrual and reproductive factors, have no significant association with the onset of thyroid cancer in Saudi females.","PeriodicalId":256236,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Umm Al-Qura University for Medical Sciences","volume":"148 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127390649","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
