A digital-physical hybrid world makes itpossible to optimize our energy use and to offer morecomfortable traffic management. However, we still need to investigate how to interact with a hybrid world. Augmentedreality and virtual reality techniques offer promising ways forinteracting with a digital-physical hybrid world, but our currentunderstanding of how to use them in the real world isinsufficient. In this paper, we present an overview of two case studies. One is avirtual reality system, the other is an augmented reality system. From our experiences with the case studies, we found thatmaintaining the reality is an important factor in designing asuccessful interaction within a digital-physical hybrid world. We also present a possible future scenario allowing seamlessintegration of a real world and a fictional world for designing adigital-physical hybrid world. We discuss how reality also plays animportant role in analyzing the scenario to create a successfuldesign. The result shows that analyzing people's sense of reality isan important design tool for designing a future dailyenvironment that seamlessly integrates fictional and real worlds.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122064482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This architecture makes use of the advantages of embedded control systems in the sense of parallel execution, and reduces their disadvantages by incurring minimal overhead from task scheduling and inter-task communication. With a model predictive control application, our architecture achieves communication latency 20 times faster than in current real-time OS communication methods for many cores. Moreover, our architecture achieves a speed-up for 64 cores that is 40 times that in single core execution, while its performance scalability is saturated up to 32 cores in real-time OS communication.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132599903","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to state-of-the-art solutions where a central Battery Management System (BMS) exists, we propose an Embedded Battery Management (EBM) that entirely decentralizes the monitoring and control of the battery pack. For this purpose, each cell of the pack is equipped with a Cell Management Unit (CMU) that monitors and controls local parameters of the respective cell, using its computational and communication resources. This combination of a battery cell and CMU forms the smart cell. Consequently, system-level functions are performed in a distributed fashion by the network of smart cells, applying concepts of self-organization to enable plug-and-play integration. This decentralized distributed architecture might offer significant advantages over centralized BMSs, resulting in higher modularity, easier integration and shorter time to market for battery packs. A development platform has been set up to design and analyze circuits, protocols and algorithms for EBM enabled by smart cells.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125068585","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mobile devices as embedded systems might not provide sufficient performance to meet the computational requirements for object detection, whereas it is not reasonable to enhance such devices with powerful processors. In this paper, we present a prototype system for mobile object detection based on smartphones and high-performance servers supplemented with graphics processing units (GPUs). The basic idea in the design of this system is to offload expensive image processing on a remote server over a wireless network, which allows mobile devices to support high-precision object detection. We describe an experimental evaluation using Android smartphones and high-end workstation with NVIDIA GPUs. Our conclusion is that mobile object detection is achievable at the expense of millisecond latency due to the communication between the mobile device and the remote server.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133665083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stability of Kalman filtering with random packet losses is studied, where the packet losses are modeled by the Gilbert-Elliott channel model and the stability is measured by the so-called peak covariance stability introduced in [1]. We give two sufficient conditions for the peak covariance stability: one combined with a numerical method provides an accurate criterion, and the other is in a simple form and easy to check, both of which are shown to be less conservative than existing works in practice. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of our result compared with relevant literature.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114817377","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While safety-critical systems have been extensively studied in both the discrete (computing) and analog (control) domains, the developed techniques apply to either one domain or the other. As cyber-physical systems span both domains, the focus on an individual domain leaves a gap on the systemlevel, where complex interactions between the domains can lead to failures that cannot be analyzed by considering only the physical orthe digital part of the integrated CPS. We discuss such a complex failure condition in a real-world brakecontrol system, and demonstrate its detection using a formalverification approach specifically targeting CPS.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127290817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

GPU, with a large number of cores and extremely high parallel processing, promises better computation if the data parallelism often found in real-world scenarios of CPS could be exploited. Nevertheless, its performance is limited by the latency incurred when data are transferred between GPU memory and I/O devices. This paper describes a method, based on zero-copy processing, for data transmission between GPUs and NICs. The arrangement enables NICs to directly transfer data to and from GPU. Experimental results show effective data throughput without packet loss.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124821492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An HMES user wears retro-reflective markers on her 13 joints and follows a motion demonstrated by an expert. Two smartphones detect markers and transmit detected 2D marker positions to the server which reconstructs 3D motion of the user. The server performs a spatio-temporal alignment between the motion of the user and the motion demonstrated by an expert to evaluate the quality of the user's motion. The proposed system is applicable for physical therapy and sports education as an inexpensive alternative. We demonstrate that the 3D motion of the HMES user can be reconstructed reliably in real-time and successfully aligned with the reference motion of an expert, providing real-time feedback to the user.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130646090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Modeling Random Deployment in Wireless Sensor Networks for Infrastructure-less Cyber Physical Systems","authors":"M. Won, Ho-Kyeong Ra, Taejoon Park, S. Son","doi":"10.1109/CPSNA.2014.26","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/CPSNA.2014.26","url":null,"abstract":"Random deployment enables rapid installation of a large number of sensors in locations of difficult access, which is important for many infrastructure-less cyber physical systems (CPS), e.g., for disaster response, battle field and extraterrestrial operations. However, random deployment results in heterogeneous sensor postures with varying antenna orientations, a source of network performance degradation. Although much is known about the effect of antenna orientations in 802.15-based wireless sensor networks (WSNs), most works assume no physical disturbance to antennas. However, heterogeneous sensor postures (e.g., overturned sensors) may cause significant disruption to the functionalities of antennas in addition to the reported variation of received signal strength (RSSI). In this paper, we provide empirical characterization of node-to-node communication in random deployment and present the first radio model that effectively captures the distinctive characteristics. Through simulations using our model, we provide a quantitative analysis of the aggregate effect of random antenna orientations of a large number of sensors with heterogeneous postures. Furthermore, we introduce a prototype sensor package that can be used to reduce the impact of random deployment.","PeriodicalId":254175,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems, Networks, and Applications","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121913140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
