However, the problem faced by the application developers is that such devices have limited processing ability together with limited memory. At the same time, the servers have faster processing speed and larger memory. In this case, an obvious solution would have been to shift the majority of the computation and storage on to the server. Whenever a user wants to access this information, he generates a request and the results are transported to his/her mobile device. The user is required to select various options at the device screen before getting the final result front the server. Each time an option is selected, data transfer takes place between the two ends. The bandwidth available to a mobile user is inadequate to facilitate such large and frequent data transfers. This paper presents a three-tier application model that works specifically for the GSM networks (i.e. 2nd and higher generation of mobile networks). Using this model, various new and extremely useful applications can be designed. They would require no extra, expensive hardware and can easily fit into the existing network infrastructure","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. The QoS requirements and improvement in job execution time can be achieved with the aid of proper load balancing among the machines. An effective way to achieve load balance is to link up these end-user machines with multiple potential heterogeneous idle or under-loaded clustered-servers and allow these servers with idle retrieval bandwidth to help out end-user machines that are low power or temporarily overloaded (bottleneck). The clustered VoD servers approach provides scalability and availability compared to a single video server. In this paper we design and implement a new clustered-server-client architecture for multimedia VoD applications along with a new REMS+VoD algorithm. Rigorous simulation for the algorithm has been performed by varying both the number of video-requests (sessions) and the number of potential servers. The simulation results show that our approach provides: (1) effective load balancing; (2) scalability; and (3) availability in a VoD system","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. It includes detailed mathematical calculations of the front end of the IFM receiver. The sensitivity, and dynamic range, based on COTS components for a given probability of detection and false alarm rate were calculated. The simulation results from antenna to phase correlator on CAD software are presented. COTS from different manufacturers was evaluated to achieve an optimum sensitivity and dynamic range for the receiver. Two different kinds of components were considered, i.e., package hybrid devices and surface mount components. A software program in C language was developed for the entire calculation of the receiver. The design involves careful consideration of various components' noise figure, gain and third order intercept. Preliminary design calculations and simulations show that surface mount components in the range of 0.5 to 2 GHz show better performance in terms of cost with the dynamic range of 50dB and a sensitivity of -77dBm. The design calculations and simulation also show that a dynamic range of 31 dB and tangential sensitivity of -73dB can be achieved using hybrid-packaged devices in the 2 to 8 GHz band.","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. Dividing this data into equal partitions and processing it in parallel naturally becomes a choice. Peer-to-peer computing exposes a bright source for exploiting parallelism and maintaining scale-up capability. We consider parallelism in genetic algorithms while computing the fitness of the population individuals (chromosomes). This strategy has an edge over its counterpart, that is, parallelism in genetic operators, because genetic operators tend to be computationally cheap. Simply speaking this scheme supports large data sets, that is. larger the data size, larger will be the degree of parallelism achieved.","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. While its predecessors focused on the storage and transmission of audiovisual sequences, MPEG-4, being the first object-based coding standard, has much more to offer. Motion estimation (ME), the most computationally intensive part of MPEG, requires very high power throughput on account of its high memory utilization. To cope with the bandwidth and processing power requirements, the best approach entails a dedicated implementation for such a demanding algorithm. The first step of the design involves hardware/software partitioning to map most of the motion estimation functions in hardware. In order for the system to meet area and power dissipation constraints, fewer time critical functions, like intra-frame coding, discrete cosine transform, quantization, variable length coding and zigzag scanning, are handled as part of the software portion of the program. We have increased the precision significantly by doubling the accuracy of motion compensation from integer-pel to half-pel. Sum of absolute differences (SAD) is chosen as the criterion for evaluating the best match of motion vectors. The block matching is achieved with the novel robust search algorithm called predictive diamond search (PDS).","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. The level of input power which causes the gain saturation is very important since it defines the intended application of a SLA. In this paper, a new analytical method to estimate the level of input optical power which causes the gain saturation in different types of SLA is outlined. They appear as human resources educated, trained through professional practice and employed in much better conditions than those the country of their origin could have provided to them. If such a country were able to use these resources largely shaped through others' investments, it would gain a lot. An e-governance model is presented to convert this brain drain into gain by tracking and maintaining these diversified brains of a developing country so that the migrated scholars get the opportunity to serve their motherland remaining remote from their country of origin. A governance policy is also proposed In this work, so that the government of a LDC (low developed country) can successfully and efficiently maintain this network to achieve maximum gain.","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. Our proposed algorithm optimally utilizes the available network resources by reducing control overheads. Previously the algorithm was proposed for source-initiated reservation with global state information. It was proved that source initiated reservation performs better than the destination reservation protocol but there are a number of problems with maintaining global state information by a single node. We have proposed a source-initiated reservation algorithm without global state information that effectively manages traffic, along with reducing overheads in the network thereby improving the efficiency of the entire network. Blocking in the network is based on performance of each link independent of the other. We have simulated three different types of networks such as ARPA net, NSF net and Pak Academic Intranet. Simulations have proved that the proposed algorithm performs better in different network topologies","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. ITU-T G.723.1 is a speech compression standard for multimedia communications. G.723.1 is a dual rate codec that compresses the speech signal to 6.3 and 5.3 kbps while maintaining the toll quality and relatively low delay. The major objective of this research is to successfully implement the ITU G.723.1 speech compression standard in Java. The need for implementing this standard in Java was to build a secure, robust, object oriented and platform independent speech coding software, however the delay (execution time) is slightly increased around 10 ms, which may slightly affect the implementation","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003. This work takes a case study of a medium size software house in Pakistan, which has undertaken a complex software project and has been using its own standards and practices for execution. After comprehensive study of CMM Level 2, the company's processes are mapped to confine them to adhere to CMM Level 2. This case study helps other software houses in the country to quickly adapt to CMM Level 2 and thereby keep on improving the maturity of their processes and earn strips of higher CMM levels.","PeriodicalId":253329,"journal":{"name":"7th International Multi Topic Conference, 2003.
