Marín","doi":"10.17811/TDG.21.1999.283-295","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17811/TDG.21.1999.283-295","url":null,"abstract":"The structural relationships between the Variscan basement and the Permo-Mesozoic cover around the Cantabrian Zone show that they were jointly deformed during the Alpine deformation. The Variscan basement was uplifted and internally deformed; this internal deformation usually caused reactivation of earlier structures. Thus, Variscan folds were tightened, giving rise to steepening and reactivation of previously folded Variscan thrusts, as a result of flexural-slip mechanisms. Moreover, normal faults related to the development of Permo-Mesozoic basins were inverted. Wherein the basement is mostly shaly, the Permo-Mesozoic cover developed its own structures, mainly buckle folds, whereas the basement played a passive role. In the basement, the amount of shortening during Alpine deformation was around 20% in most areas. This value is greater in the forelimb of a large-scale fault-propagation fold developed in the mountain front, and also close to the inverted normal faults, as a result of butressing. A complete accretionary complex is developed at the collision zone, including: offscraping sediments, an accretionary prism, ophiolitic units and a high pressure belt. Prins","doi":"10.17811/TDG.21.1999.385-403","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17811/TDG.21.1999.385-403","url":null,"abstract":"Carboniferous lithostratigraphic units are analysed for the Sierra del Brezo area south of the Ruesga Fault at which the northern branch of the Cantabric-Asturian orogen overrides the southern branch in northern Palencia. These belong to the Asturian-Leonese facies realm and prolong the northward facing thrust units of northern Leon eastwards in the most tightly compressed part of the Palaeozoic orogen of the Cantabrian Mountains (Figs. 1, 2). Two subareas are the ValsurbioAlmonga anticlinal structure and the Rebanal-Ventanilla subarea where the axial planes are reversed and considerable shearing took place. As in northern Leon, the uppermost Famennian - lowermost Tournaisian Ermita Formation overlies progressively older Devonian strata northwards with an erosional contact (Fig. 3). The upper Tournaisian to lowermost Namurian Genicera Formation (with three constituent members) follows all over the area after a generalised stratigraphic break. A 600 to 800 m thick development of Namurian “caliza de montana” (Barcaliente and Valdeteja formations) in the South passes northwards into much thinner (c. 40-85 m) limestones with a partial (sometimes total) elimination of the Barcaliente Formation (Figs. 4, 5). Carbonate debris flows and bioclastic limestones in shales characterise the top of the Valdeteja Formation. An erosional contact separates the Valdeteja Limestone Formation in the northern subarea from overlying shales and turbidites of the Carmen Formation. The marked stratigraphic breaks noted in the northern subarea match those found at exactly the same levels in the Revilla Nappe, some 30 km eastwards in northern Palencia. The Revilla Nappe succession, with low-angle unconformities separating an even thinner Valdeteja Formation (30 m) from Genicera Fm underneath and Carmen Fm above, apparently corresponds to the same palaeogeographic area characterised by repeated uplift as the northern subarea of the Sierra del Brezo (Fig. 6). These reefs were deposited south of a Betic island in a coastal area. The lensoid coral reef is made up of Tarbellastraea and Porites heads, intensely bored by Lithophaga. The corals grew on a bank of large oysters that colonised conglomerates. Banks of smaller oysters (O. edulis) grew on silts in more distal areas.\u0000\u0000Fossil assemblages indicate high ambient nutrient content. The fluvial network, with a 6th order, fits to the theoretical Horton principles; there is not a correspondance between the relief parameters and the hypsometric integral value (39%), due to methodological restrictions; the geometrical parameters suggest a quick rainfall response; the low value of the drainage density (2.62 km/km2) is according to the physical basin features. El emplazamiento del manto, que estuvo ayudado por la presencia de un fluido a alta presion en las areniscas del Devonico Superior, tuvo lugar inicialmente mediante episodios sismicos que causaron la reduccion del tamano de grano e inyectaron cuarzo detritico en la zona de falla. Posteriormente, el deslizamiento estable por flujo cataclastico causo la concentracion del deslizamiento sobre fracturas de tipo P que definen una foliacion cataclastica. La ofiolita, de edad Devonico Inferior, se compone de una parte mantelica de composicion harzburgitica y dunitica serpentinizadas, y de una parte cortical constituida por gabros de grano grueso y pegmatoides. Ambas fueron intruidas por numerosos diques de diabasa. Los procesos de convergencia se iniciaron poco tiempo despues de la formacion de la corteza oceanica y aparecen registrados en un abanico de cabalgamientos imbricados y enraizados en el manto. Subsequent reactivation during the Hercynian orogeny was related notably to transcurrect tectonics responsible for the final structure of the zone. In this study, we describe the main features resulting from superposition of the two orogenic periods, Cadomian and Hercynian, and a correlation with similar areas of other pre-Mesozoic European massifs is attempted.
