Seismic surveying was profusely used and more than 2.000 km of seismic reflection profiles were acquired in different prospective campaigns. Two main reflectors “H” –Tertiary Cretaceous unconformity– and “K” –shaly level below the Santonian– were recognized in the profiles. The interpretation of several profiles allowed us to define the structure of the MesoTertiary basin that fills the asturian platform. More than 50 km. of rock were drilled in test wells in the platform between 1975 and 1985 and their main characteristics are also described in this paper. The first offshore well (“C-1”) was drilled in 1975 and showed positive results in Tertiary rocks. The results were satisfactory, given that oil and/or gas were found in more than half of the wells. The main reservoir rocks are in Cretaceous and Paleocene levels, and although Jurassic rocks were the main target, they were scarcely reached in the different prospective campaigns. En las dos primeras se extraian calizas, mientras que en la tercera se explotaban areniscas. Aqui se presentan las caracteristicas petrograficas (textura, mineralogia, etc.) y fisico-mecanicas (densidad, porosidad, absorcion de agua, heladicidad, resistencias a la cristalizacion de sales, al choque, al desgaste, a la compresion uniaxial y a la flexion) de dichos materiales, con el fin de darlas a conocer en el sector de la Piedra Natural (no aparecen en los catalogos de rocas ornamentales espanolas) y facilitar informacion respecto a su utilizacion mas idonea. Fúnez","doi":"10.17811/TDG.23.2002.4-5","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17811/TDG.23.2002.4-5","url":null,"abstract":"Reviewing the geology of the variscan basement in the region between the Ordenes Complex and the Verin Syncline (Eastern Galicia) allows to establish more accurately the geometry of tectonic sheets below the allochthonous complexes in NW Iberia (the Paraautochthonous Sheet) and its autochthon (the Central-Iberian Zone). The emplacement of these units took place during the development of the Variscan Orogen as a consequence of the collision between Gondwana and Laurentia. In this work we present a geological map of the lower boundary of the Para-autochthonous Sheet in the study area and we establish a correlation of the rock sequence in the autochthonous with a comparable and better known stratigraphic sequence in the Ollo de Sapo Antiform within the Central-Iberian Zone. We suggest that the rocks previously named as the Santabaia Group correspond in fact to the Serie de los Cabos with the only difference that they include a volcano-sedimentary succession similar to the Ollo de Sapo Formation. The more suitable technical treatments to the different phenomena from instability observed (slides, creep, etc.) are putting forward, as well as the recommended types of foundations based on the existing geotechnical conditions. {"title":"Estructura cortical de la cordillera y margen continental cantábricos: perfiles ESCI-N","authors":"J. Gallástegui","doi":"10.17811/TDG.22.2000.3-234","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17811/TDG.22.2000.3-234","url":null,"abstract":"The aim of this study is the N-S crustal structure of the Cantabrian Mountains and the North Iberian margin along a transect close to the 5°W meridian. The geological transect is based on all geological and geophysical data available, especially the onshore and offshore deep seismic reflection profiles ESCIN-2 and ESCIN-4. The structure of the orogen results from the superposition of the Alpine deformation, related to the partial closure of the Bay of Biscay during the Tertiary, on the Variscan crust. The N-S structure is that of an orogenic prism, with opposite vergences at both ends where two foreland basins developed: the Duero Basin in the S and the North Iberian platform basin in the N. The lower crust from the North Iberian margin slided southwards along a detachment and indented between the upper and middle Iberian crust. This forced the delamination and northwards underthusting of the middle and lower Iberian crust. As a result, the crust thickened under the Cantabrian Mountains and a 55 km thick crustal root developed. Simultaneously, the Cantabrian Mountains were uplifted by several north vergent crustal thrusts rooted at 14-15 km deep. Llavona","doi":"10.17811/TDG.21.1999.333-339","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17811/TDG.21.1999.333-339","url":null,"abstract":"Samples of the Laspra dolomite used as a building material in the Cathedral of Oviedo, have been subjected to freezing-thawing cycles, with the aim of assessing the applicability of XRay computed tomography to the study of the textural characteristics of rocks and the inner damage due to weathering processes. The samples have been externally observed by binocular magnifying microscope after each performed cycle, and fissures were visible in the fourth cycle. The XRay tomography has provided a precise information of the developed fractographic network inside the specimens, this being associated to the boundary between two texturally different zones. Se revisa la fauna de braquiopodos terebratulidos del Emsiense Superior de dicha localidad. Se proponen un nuevo genero Devonix, y dos nuevas especies: Devonix virgo y Cryptonella truyolsi. Se analiza el estatuto taxonomico de Cimicinellidae y de Cimicinella Schmidt y se rechaza de la familia al genero Cimicinoides Anderson, Boucot and Johnson, con bucle braquial axial y cardinalio muy diferentes de los de Cimicinella. Although they show lithological similarities, they are well differentiated. The Garcia de Sola unit is described and informally established for the first time in this paper. It is the highest member of the Herrera Fm in the Herrera del Duque syncline. The more characteristic outcrop (“La Isla” section) is composed of several beds of quartzites and quartzitic sandstones with abundant iron oxide. This unit and the underlying one (upper member of the Herrera Fm.) have a paleontological record characteristic at least of an uppermost Emsian age for the beginning of the hiatus.The most probable cause of the hiatus is an emersion, as shown by the lithology of these units. La red hidrografica, de orden 6, cumple los presupuestos teoricos de Horton; no existe una correspondencia entre el valor de los parametros de relieve y el de la integral hipsometrica (39%), lo que pone en evidencia la limitacion de] empleo de esta ultima; los parametros geometricos sugieren una rapida respuesta de la cuenca frente a las precipitaciones y el bajo valor de la densidad de drenaje (2,62 km / km2 ) esta en consonancia con las caracteristicas fisicas de la cuenca.
