Abstract

The Ossa-Morena zone bears evidence of intense Cadomian deformation and metamorphism affecting the whole continental lithosphere. Subsequent reactivation during the Hercynian orogeny was related notably to transcurrect tectonics responsible for the final structure of the zone. In this study, we describe the main features resulting from superposition of the two orogenic periods, Cadomian and Hercynian, and a correlation with similar areas of other pre-Mesozoic European massifs is attempted. Finally, we propose a geodynamic model from the latest Proterozoic to the Carboniferous that accounts for the geological evolucion of the area.
