Some of those objects have been on display in the university's library, but most of them still remain stored in the university's archive, limiting opportunities to use them in teaching and learning activities. This chapter describes a research project focusing on digitizing and visualizing cultural artifacts using virtual reality (VR) technology, with the aim of supporting learning of Canadian heritage in cross-cultural courses. The chapter shows technical aspects of the objects' 3D digitization process and goes on to explain a user study with students watching a 3D model displayed on a low-cost VR headset. Results from the study show that visualization of the 3D model on the VR headset was effective, efficient, and satisfactory enough to use, motivating students to keep using it in further sessions. Technology integration of VR in educational settings is also analyzed and discussed.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"144 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129502680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the challenges faced in classrooms is how to understand the autistic children's behaviors and empathize with them. The proposed VR application repurposes a different form of narrative of the world of a child on the autism spectrum in an immersive environment designed for educators. The VR application in this chapter uses recorded footage through 360-degree cameras and special effects powered by Unity. In a context where integration is a key to today's learning and education, the researchers believe that the use of VR to assist the teachers in empathizing with their learners' traits and conditions may be of great benefit to the learners' school experiences.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130940025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The geometric structure of 52 minerals was investigated in a specific modeling program to find if meaningful visualization pertaining to the field of art can be extracted from a mathematical and scientific resource. Working with the lines, spheres, and polygons that define crystal at the nanoscale provided the author with an exceptional environment from which to extract coherent visualizations sustainable in the art environment. The results were tested in various interactive platforms and opened a larger debate on cross-pollination between science, humanities, and the arts. Additionally, the experiment provided new ground of investigation for unexpected connections between mathematics, earth sciences, and local cultures.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115515799","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A rapid changing world of media, information and communication, which is reshaping the future of work trends, changes literacy demands and requires more complex literacy skills. Thus, it is necessary for students to build the 21st century literacy skills through technology-integrated instructions and classroom practices. In particular, this chapter aims to raise awareness of the relevance of media literacy in teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and EFL teacher education. This chapter provides an evolution of media literacy with its origin, explores the competencies of media literacy, analyzes various frameworks for media literacy education, and elaborates on different teaching approaches. Based on this review, a conceptual framework for media literacy competencies in teacher education is proposed. Additionally, this chapter offers recommendations for best practices of media literacy in EFL classrooms as well as in EFL teachers' preparation and professional development programs.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"26 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116566112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, under the technical dimension, the person is able to use the tools of the digital world in a competent way. Considering this definition given in technical dimension, it is seen that the individual being a good digital literate is also related to the tools of the digital world. However, no matter how good a digital literate can be, she/he is suffocated in the information if there is no tool to help in accessing information in a certain area, because of the size of digital world. The purpose of this study is to strengthen the technical dimension of digital literacy by developing a tool for reaching the correct visuals by using deep learning techniques. In order to fulfill that purpose, transferring cultural heritage to the next generation by avoiding disturbing visuals, was focused.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"50 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127304887","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How teachers design instruction to meet the diverse needs of all learners in inclusion classrooms is where the importance of universal design for learning lies. UDL is the “what,” “how,” and “why” of learning; its principles provide for multiple means of engaging students, multiple representations of instructional methods and materials, multiple types of student responses, and multiple means of evaluating performance. Presented from the context of multiple literacies including media literacy, this chapter explains how UDL can be applied in the classroom in concert with response to intervention, mastery learning, and repeated measures strategies. This chapter strongly argues the utility of using universal design for learning and its benefits for teaching in inclusion classrooms.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129715791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forms of media technology (computers and iPads) used in elementary schools at present are primarily supplementary. This chapter focuses on literature as an agent for change within two education approaches, multicultural and global education. The purposes of multicultural and global education and why literature is used as an approach to teaching are explained. Multicultural teacher education is discussed, but global teacher education is not, since not enough research could be found by this author at this time. Discussions of the uses, authenticity, and diversity issues of literature are included.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131986348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We are faced here with a new type of relationship with music, in a way that we find not only the classic takes on music as an artwork to be admired, or as a collective identity-building activity, but also as a way in which festival “stages” serves as observatories of youth, cultural and artistic practices, and values in contemporary Portugal. This chapter addresses these questions via the analysis of the mobile photo-sharing application Instagram deposited by the managers of the page of Paredes de Coura's Festival—Portuguese music festival—between 2015 and 2017, and it is from here that the author will try to understand and analyze the dynamics underlying the festival as an immersive experience.","PeriodicalId":251793,"journal":{"name":"Advances in Multimedia and Interactive Technologies","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133628630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
