It infects one third of the world’s population at any point of time. There are approximately 9 million new cases of all forms of Tuberculosis occurring annually & 3 million people die from it each year. India accounts for 28% of the global T.B. burden. Every year, approximately 1.8 million persons develop Tuberculosis of which about 0.8 million are new smear positive highly infectious cases & about 4.17 lakh people die of TB every year, one person dies every minute & 1000 die every day . The emergence of multi-drug resistant TB (MDR TB) and the spread of HIV/AIDS are contributing to the worsening impact of the disease the principal reasons for the WHO declaring TB a global emergency in 1993.Directly-observed treatment short-course (DOTS) is based on scientifically sound technology and direct observation of drug intake of the patient by treatment observers, thus obviating the drug default problem. It was introduced on a pilot-basis in India in 1993, and large scale expansion began in 1998. By year 2005 entire country was covered by the programme.","PeriodicalId":247354,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Epidemiology","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133721368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Prevalence Of Glaucoma In Nigeria","authors":"C. Nosiri, S. Chawat, Gambo Abba","doi":"10.5580/a66","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.5580/a66","url":null,"abstract":"Glaucoma, a disease that damages the optic nerve represents a major cause of vision loss throughout the world. Globally, about 314 million people are visually impaired while 45 million of them are blind with 87% of the visually impaired living in the developing countries. The global target of WHO in Vision 2020 which is the “right to sight initiative” is ultimately to reduce blindness prevalence to less than 0.5% in all countries or less than 1% in any community. This study was aimed to find out the prevalence of glaucoma in Nigeria from 1998-2006. The National Eye Centre Kaduna, Nigeria, a collaborating centre of WHO in the prevention of blindness on patients who presented to the hospital with the condition from 1998-2006 was used for the study. The instruments used during the course of this research work for data collection were the primary source which was directly from ward register, primary health care clinic and registers from consulting clinics obtained from the medical record department. A total of 7573 patients were used for the purpose of the study. Out of this total, 4876 patients were male representing 63% while 2789 patients were female representing 37%. Age distribution showed that the prevalence of Glaucoma is higher between ages 40 years and above with 3202 patients representing 43% followed by age 3140 with 2792 patients representing 37%. The yearly distribution of glaucoma was 330 patients in 1998 representing 4% and 1680 patients representing 23% in 2006 indicating an increase in the prevalence of Glaucoma.","PeriodicalId":247354,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Epidemiology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130669572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We are reviewing the literature with major emphasis on article by Groenwold et al that discusses different perspectives of the current debate. It provides valuable insights into evaluating unmeasured confounders, functional health status in particular. It is valuable since it provides opportunity for examining the alternative explanations governing uncontrolled confounding. Using example of this article, we present this review with the objective of identifying and assessing unmeasured confounders. We present stepwise approach to identify and assess uncontrolled confounder in a given study.","PeriodicalId":247354,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Epidemiology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134576248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several socio-cultural and economic factors interplay in the decision for place of delivery. Objective: To know the pattern of deliveries and related factors for appropriate advocacy and interventions. Material and Methods: Community based crosssectional study was conducted in 2007-08 in a Rural Block of District Jhajjar, Haryana. Assuming 50% institutional deliveries, at 95% confidence level with 10% allowable error; the calculated sample size was 400 deliveries. Sampling frames of all eligible women, who delivered within last 12 months, were prepared separately for all five sectors in the study block. 80 mothers were selected randomly from each sector. Absentees after three visits were replaced by next mothers in the frame. Required data were collected on pretested semi-structured schedules from study mothers by house-to-house visits and analyzed using SPSS (version10.0). Results: 227(56.7%) mothers had institutional deliveries. Among home deliveries 173(43.3%), attending personnel were: 30(17%) untrained dais, 103(59%) trained dais; 19% health personnel and 5% others. Illiteracy, poverty, no accompanying person, lower castes, inadequate antenatal check-ups, previous home delivery etc. were significantly associated with home deliveries. 50% mothers considered that institutional deliveries were not necessary. Discussion: Addressing socioeconomic constraints, creating awareness regarding importance of institutional deliveries, identifying and motivating mothers, who are likely to have home deliveries, for institutional deliveries through quality antenatal services appeared vital for ensuring deliveries in institutions.","PeriodicalId":247354,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Epidemiology","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116524795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Using data from the Utah Population Database to look at occupational differences in the experience of mortality among women born prior to 1900, I compare mortality and its causes by socioeconomic status, while specifically looking at the prevalence of first causes of death by occupational type. I find there are differences in causes of death and survival rates, by occupation and socioeconomic status.","PeriodicalId":247354,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Epidemiology","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120934908","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
