There are two types of revision, self-revision, and other-revision, and the latter can be carried out by a translator or by a domain expert. Some broadcasting and publishing houses in Croatia also hire proofreaders to check the translation. The aim of this research was to explore how translators perceive the cooperation between translators and proofreaders. A semi-structured interview with audiovisual and literary translators was conducted for the purposes of this research. The findings show that translators expressed interest in communication with proofreaders to gain experience, resolve doubts and find the best possible translation solutions, as well as to get feedback. The translators find corrections that improve the quality of their translations welcome but disagree with preferential changes. This research has also pointed to the importance of external circumstances in the cooperation between translators and proofreaders.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124484047","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the theoretical framework, medical terminology and, in particular, geriatric terminology, is defined with a specific focus on key characteristics of medical terms, drawing primarily on the works of Horecký (1956), Masár (1991), Pavlovič et al. (2011), Karwacka (2015) and others. The controversial role that synonymy may have in determining terminological equivalents is also discussed. Based on the classification by Karwacka (2015), synonymic pairs of geriatric terms identified during the phase of compilation of a terminological glossary in the field of geriatrics in French and Slovak are categorised into groups based on the nature of the synonymous term and illustrated with examples. Overall, five types of synonyms were identified (eponym – non-eponymous term; international – domestic term; term – colloquial name; English term – domestic term; term – acronym), which may pose challenges for medical translators.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129652572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eksplicitacija kao jedan od najranije definiranih i najviše istraživanih postupaka u prevođenju, smatra se i univerzalnom strategijom (tzv. prijevodna univerzalija), no nije se značajnije istraživao u prijevodima na hrvatski jezik, pa ni terminologija nije u tom smislu ujednačena. Eksplicitacija je kao univerzalno svojstvo prijevoda primijećena i definirana intuitivno, prije pojave korpusnih alata i deskriptivne struje u znanosti o prevođenju, kvalitativnom analizom izvornika i prijevoda, dok su kasnija korpusna istraživanja dovela do novih spoznaja i dubljeg uvida u ovu pojavu, doprinoseći tako njezinom empirijskom utemeljenju. No, kritičari tih istraživanja upućuju na to kako se različiti fenomeni uvrštavaju pod zajednički pojam eksplicitacije te navode brojne nedostatke njezine definicije. S obzirom na različite nazive koji su se u hrvatskom jeziku upotrebljavali u tom smislu, ovim se radom želi dati terminološki doprinos navedenom pojmu na hrvatskome jeziku tako da se razmotri opseg i sadržaj pojma i s obzirom na to predloži najprikladniji naziv.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114963332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Retranslations, on the other hand, are seen as a way of achieving more accomplished texts because they retain more of the source text’s foreign features. The aim of this study is to test the Retranslation Hypothesis on the example of two Croatian translations of William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury. The first part of the study presents a brief overview of various studies that have brought into question whether the motivations for retranslations could be accounted exclusively within the scope of the Retranslation Hypothesis. In the second part of the study diverse translation shifts employed in the rendering of the modernist features of the source text in two Croatian translations are analysed. In the analysis it is assumed that translation shifts are employed in order to adjust the novel to the context of the target culture.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"185 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132128295","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both types can be free or proprietary. The use of cloud-based technology for educational purposes is on the rise, with non-professional desktop-based systems still being used often, as they are mostly free of charge and offer similar features. This study investigates the educational potential of these types of systems, desktop-based vs. cloud-based and free vs. proprietary, to show whether there is a significant difference in their role in subtitling education at university level. A questionnaire was conducted among two groups of students who used one or the other of the above-mentioned systems. The study primarily focused on the perceived level of skill acquisition and the satisfaction with software functions. Desktop-based and cloud-based systems have proved to be similarly useful in subtitling education with few differences in skill acquisition, which depend on whether the software is free or proprietary. Educational implications are discussed based on the findings.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134402759","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Revisiting the retranslation hypothesis: A case study of two Croatian translations of James Joyce’s Ulysses","authors":"Veronika Mesić","doi":"10.17234/hieronymus.7.2","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.17234/hieronymus.7.2","url":null,"abstract":"The retranslation hypothesis was introduced to translation studies by Berman (1990) and Bensimon (1990). According to the hypothesis, retranslations tend to be closer to the source text and more foreignizing in nature, while initial translations aim to bring the source text closer to the target audience by domesticating it. Recent research challenges the validity of some elements of the retranslation hypothesis as well as its universal applicability. The aim of the paper is to examine whether the hypothesis is applicable to the first translation and retranslation of a radically modernist text such as James Joyce's 1922 novel Ulysses. A comparative analysis of selected segments from two existing translations of the novel into Croatian, the 1957 translation by Zlatko Gorjan and the 1991 retranslation by Luko Paljetak, is carried out. The closeness of the target texts to their source texts is measured in two ways. The first parameter is the number of times a translation strategy is applied. In this part of the analysis the taxonomy of translation strategies provided by Chesterman (2016) is used. Another factor considered to be a suitable parameter for estimating the closeness of a target text to its source text is the preservation of instances of creative language use, particularly suitable for analysing the translations of Ulysses. The contradictory findings related to the two observed parameters lead to the conclusion that the retranslation hypothesis does not provide a sufficiently comprehensive methodological framework for explaining the phenomenon of retranslation. In its conclusion, the paper suggests that each translation and retranslation should be observed individually and with respect to the context in which they were created.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127243552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
