As law has a great impact on reality, linguistic expressions of strong obligation and their use are a valuable topic. The goal of this research was to analyse how the use of two modals, i.e., morati and must, differs in the source and target texts of Slovene and EU legislation. To do so, a bidirectional bilingual corpus containing almost 600,000 words was compiled. The corpus consisted of the subcorpus of Slovene legislation in Slovene (source) and English (target), and the subcorpus of EU legislation in English and Slovene. The analysis has shown some differences in the use of the two modals: morati is more frequently used than must in both subcorpora; there is an important difference in the use of both modals between Slovene and EU legislation. Some shifts in the degree of strength of obligation were also found, however some proved to be successful translations nonetheless.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134043433","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Its aim is to provide an insight into lexical innovation in dystopias and their translations by relying on Millward’s (2007) theory of dystopian neology. Based on Millward’s theoretical model, the study hypothesizes that coinage is the least frequent, and derivation the most frequent word formation process among source text neologisms. The third hypothesis states that literal translation and lexical creation are the most productive translation procedures. The research consists of extracting source text neologisms and their translations and analyzing the employed word formation processes and translation procedures. The findings show that compounding is the most prolific creation process in source text neologisms, while coinage and conversion are not used at all. The extracted neologisms are mostly rendered through literal translation and borrowing.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131029416","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although George Orwell’s Animal Farm belongs to neither of the two categories, it is affiliated with the subgenre of allegory, which represents quite a challenge to any potential translator. However, the real motivation behind the choice of this book lies in its criticism of the Soviet Union, especially since it was published in 1945, meaning that the political and socio-cultural context influenced its publication and reception to a great extent. This study aims to identify the procedures applied in rendering proper names from Animal Farm in two Croatian (the first translation and retranslation) and four Russian translations (the first translation and three retranslations), and to determine the differences among the translations into the same target language, as well as the differences between Croatian and Russian target texts. Finally, a study of first translations and subsequent retranslations will enable us to detect diachronic changes in the general translation orientations.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132834657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is becoming a widespread solution to the challenges of a constantly rising demand for quick and affordable translations of both text and speech, causing disruption and adjustments of the translation practice and profession, but at the same time making multilingual communication easier than ever before. This paper focuses on the speech-to-speech (S2S) translation app Instant Language Assistant (ILA), which brings together the state-of-the-art translation technology: automatic speech recognition, machine translation and text-to-speech synthesis, and allows for MT-mediated multilingual communication. The aim of the paper is to assess the quality of translations of conversational language produced by the S2S translation app ILA for en-de and en-hr language pairs. The research includes several levels of translation quality analysis: human translation quality assessment by translation experts using the Fluency/Adequacy Metrics, light-post editing, and automated MT evaluation (BLEU). Moreover, the translation output is assessed with respect to language pairs to get an insight into whether they affect the MT output quality and how. The results show a relatively high quality of translations produced by the S2S translation app ILA across all assessment models and a correlation between human and automated assessment results.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115690880","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this sense, computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools and machine translation (MT) tools have become a necessity in daily work. This study attempts to shed light on the use of CAT tools, particularly among Croatian translators, regarding the types of tools used, the extent to which they are used and the extent to which they facilitate and/or expedite the translation process. The results are discussed in the context of a previously conducted survey among translators around the world on the same topic. The sample for the survey included 94 translators registered in Croatia with different experience and language pairs. The results show that a large number of translators use CAT tools but they do not agree on the degree of their efficiency.","PeriodicalId":246488,"journal":{"name":"Hieronymus : Časopis za istraživanja prevođenja i terminologije","volume":"316 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132068417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
