This article describes a study that involved students attending a course unit where both face-to-face and distance learning classes were used during the 1st semester of the 2020/2021 academic year. Following the results obtained from a questionnaire and a focus group, this article presents the students’ perspectives on their experience. 81 students responded to the questionnaire and 10 of them took part in the focus group. Results show that the students’ equipment was suitable enough for them to attend the classes held at a distance, even though most respondents showed a marked preference for face-to-face classes. As for the communication platforms adopted, Moodle was fundamental to the functioning of that given course unit, and Zoom was deemed appropriate for both theoretical and practical classes. Finally, it is worth noting that the activities suggested were appropriate to develop the competencies and skills set out in the syllabus and that students were capable of successfully developing the tasks they were assigned.","PeriodicalId":244532,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128101010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As if it wasn’t already evident that technologies were gaining more space on the educational policy agenda, the decision by governments to close educational institutions made it imperative to move to online using distance learning strategies, mainly technological solutions. In this paper, we analyzed an online course created to help Portuguese teachers from different educational levels. This course aimed to support teachers transitioning from face-to-face to online and provide them with an experience as distance student. The information shared by participants, as well as satisfaction questionnaire allowed us to realize two things. On one hand, that the difficulties experienced in Portugal are similar to those identified in previous studies, on the other hand to identify specific needs by education level. We conclude that pedagogical training on distance learning methodologies and hybrid contexts is emerging, should be continued and should integrate governments and educational institutions’ strategy.","PeriodicalId":244532,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"102 21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122977284","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The students’ difficulties lead to failure, lack of motivation, and abandonment of courses. The problem is more significant in computer courses, where learning programming is essential. Programming is difficult and requires a lot of work from teachers and students. Programming is a process of transforming a mental plan into a computer program. The main goal of teaching programming is for students to develop their skills to create computer programs that solve real problems. There are several factors that can be at the origin of the problem, such as the abstract concepts that programming implies; the skills needed to solve problems; the mental skills needed to decompose problems; many of the students never had the opportunity to practice computational thinking or programming; students must know the syntax, semantics, and structure of a new unnatural language in a short period of time. In this work, we present a set of strategies, included in an application, with the objective of helping teachers and students. Early identification of potential problems and prompt response is critical to preventing student failure and reducing dropout rates. This work also describes a predictive machine learning (neural network) model of student failure based on the student profile, which is built over the course of programming lessons by continuously monitoring and evaluating student activities.","PeriodicalId":244532,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"92 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132125661","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This thesis explores ways in which these data can be used to assess how well students regulate their own learning, a factor that has a direct impact on their academic performance. Ultimately, the goal is to build an early warning system able to identify students’ negative attitudes related to self-regulation at early stages of a course, enabling the possibility of providing personalized help to each student depending on their profile. The study focuses on the educational context of higher education, particularly, first-year engineering students, who typically struggle to adapt to the vastly different academic demands of college compared to high school. Among the types of data that are used in this project, information related to assessment and exams stands out as one of the most complete and relevant.","PeriodicalId":244532,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127342976","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, doing this with traditional methods is not an easy task, as current tools do not support adequate coordination between those responsible for degree design. This paper presents CORAMeval, a web-based tool that assists teaching staff, coordinators, and those managing degree programmes in assessing the quality of the competencies, learning outcomes, and assessment formats designed. This paper presents the tool developed and the results obtained after its implementation based on the evaluation carried out by a group of evaluators from six Spanish universities.","PeriodicalId":244532,"journal":{"name":"2021 International Symposium on Computers in Education (SIIE)","volume":"35 3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124981613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
