Various methods of toning/colouring paper have been trialed, assessed and employed, including watercolours, acrylic paints, powder pigments in various media, and hot and cold cellulosic textile dyes. It was found that different mlouring methods confer specific properties to the paper, providing characteristics that can be used in particular conservation applications. Methods and treatments are illustrated by case studies that include the use of coloured papers in the repair of three-dimensional artefacts.","PeriodicalId":243922,"journal":{"name":"The Paper Conservator","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134549787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the beginning of the twentieth century there appears to have been a consensus amongst paper conservators with regard to the understanding and practise of these techniques in the United Kingdom. The approach taken generally replaced the majority of elements missing from the image to a level that would today be described as ‘facsimile’. The twentieth century witnessed a radical change in attitude to image reintegration and consequently a significant body of practitioners now consider the techniques to be largely inappropriate. However since very little dialogue on the issue has been reflected in publications from the period it is not altogether clear why these changes came about. This paper considers some of the influences on paper conservation practice and how changes during the twentieth century have had a direct impact on image reintegration. It is hoped that the paper will be the beginning of a much wider debate regarding our understanding and practise of reintegration within paper conservation and contribute to both our care and interpretation of collections.","PeriodicalId":243922,"journal":{"name":"The Paper Conservator","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131040316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New equipment and applications find their sources in the myriad of constantly changing technologies, and conservators remain ever resourceful at investigating their potential. The inclusion of non-cellulosic (polyester) auxiliary support materials in the arsenal of the painting and paper conservator is but one example of this phenomenon. Moreover, developments within other conservation disciplines have provided a rich source of treatment solutions for conservators of works on paper. Notable in the last decade is a treatment method generated for the consolidation of powdery paint on ethnographic objects which delivers the consolidant in the form of an ultrasonic mist, and which has found significant applications in the treatment of flaking, friable media on paper. This article explores the incorporation of non-traditional and innovative methods and materials into the paper conservator's repertoire over the past 25 years. Examples of materials and techniques gleaned from external sources, from other conservation areas of specialization, and from interdisciplinary collaborations are cited.","PeriodicalId":243922,"journal":{"name":"The Paper Conservator","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129926120","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An efficient dialogue between conservator and scientist is essential if the study of the behaviour ofpaper-based materials is to progress. While it is no more difficult now to publish papers on conservation science research than 25 years ago, the standardof publications is very variable and it can be difficult to see defects in some of the papers of lesser quality. The burden of proof required to introduce a new paper conservation process is becoming greater with more sophisticated testing of a greater number samples using papers of different types. Efficient communication between increasingly specialized scientists and conservators is aided by a good understanding of each other's job.","PeriodicalId":243922,"journal":{"name":"The Paper Conservator","volume":"162 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114422175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is mainly concerned with the role played by the Standing Commission on Museums and Galleries and its successor body, the Museums and Galleries Corntnission (MGC). It also describes how the work of the MGC has contributed to initiatives by the audit agencies and the potential impact this will have on conservation. Reference is also made to the political, social and economic situation during the period in order to show these developments in a broader context.","PeriodicalId":243922,"journal":{"name":"The Paper Conservator","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2001-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126899951","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
