A discussion about accreditation: Reasoning, recent history and outlook

Abstract

Summary This paper explains the reasons for the introduction of a scheme of accreditation by The Institute of Paper Conservation (IPC), outlining its purpose and benefits to both IPC and its members. The author relates the recent history of the establishment of the present accreditation scheme and the philosophy of the Fast Track system. A full description is given of the present structure of National Council of Conservator-Restorers (NCCR), Professional Standards Board (PSB), assessment boards and assessors. The author concludes that active encouragement of new graduates towards accreditation by a variety of means at the disposal of IPC and the profession will aid in the continued success and acceptance of accreditation.
