The changing face of paper conservation science

Summary The range of knowledge and experience required by the modem paper conservation scientist has never been greater and this has led to most paper conservation research being done by scientists. An efficient dialogue between conservator and scientist is essential if the study of the behaviour ofpaper-based materials is to progress. While it is no more difficult now to publish papers on conservation science research than 25 years ago, the standardof publications is very variable and it can be difficult to see defects in some of the papers of lesser quality. The burden of proof required to introduce a new paper conservation process is becoming greater with more sophisticated testing of a greater number samples using papers of different types. Efficient communication between increasingly specialized scientists and conservators is aided by a good understanding of each other's job.
