Using I Madé’s Sugianto’s Ki Bari Gajah, a one hundred fifty-page Balinese novel and informants as the data, and applying the RRG theory by Van Valin and Randy (1999) other thoughts of the experts of Balinese, it was found out that -ang functioning as a transitivizing suffix can attach to noun, adjective, adverbs and verbs and imply various syntactic structures and semantic representations. Suffix -ang attached to the base in imperative sentences express no meaning. In this case, it is just used to imply that the sentence is in the form of imperative. This article attempted to identify various strategies native speakers of English realized this speech act through a qualitative method by analyzing two sets of authentic data from two half-hour interviews. Next, it investigated the lack of emphasis on disagreement in EFL materials before offering possible suggestions to equip non-native learners of English with pragmatic competence to disagree effectively. Palacio. It explores how the acts of illocutionary are conveyed by the characters in the whole novel. The purpose of this study is to find the type of illocutionary acts uttered by the main characters, the intended meaning of utterances, and the character’s purposes in using such assertive. This research applies the pragmatics theory about speech acts to analyze the use of illocutionary acts in conversations. This study is qualitative research and it uses document as the source of the data that is Wonder a novel by R.J. Palacio. The result of this study shows that there are four types of illocutionary uttered by the characters. The types of illocutionary acts are assertive, commissive, directive, and expressive. {"title":"language of American political discourse: Aristotle's rhetorical appeals as manifested in Bush's and Obama's speeches on the war on terror","authors":"Iman Raissouni","doi":"10.21744/ijllc.v6n4.904","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.21744/ijllc.v6n4.904","url":null,"abstract":"This article employs critical discourse analysis to analyze the representation of the “war on terror” in the political speeches of Presidents George Bush and Barack Obama in the decade following 9/11; it examines Aristotle's approach into the study of the language of persuasion through his three main rhetorical appeals: ethos, pathos, and logos, identifying several strands of the war on terror discourse and analyzing the way they influence the persuasiveness of the speeches and therefore the ability to generate public debate. Through insightful analysis, this paper aims to show how from a visible status in existence, the perception that white people have about black people transforms this visibility into an invisible status both in human existence and society and namely in the white American society. And also it aims to clear out how this metamorphosis of black people from visibility to invisibility at first based on white people's perception, is principally based and due to their color of skin, and to another “Blackness” of Black people or African-Americans color of skin. This ritual teaches the Karo people to maintain harmonious relations between humans, the forces of nature, and the Creator. However, in the Dutch colonial era, erpangir lau was stopped because it was part of the worship and the practice of magic. The method used in this article is a descriptive qualitative research method that uses theory as a basis. This qualitative descriptive design format embraces phenomenology and post-positivism. This study aims to describe, summarize the various situations or phenomena of social reality in a society that are the object of research, and try to pull that reality to the surface as a description of certain conditions, situations, or phenomena. The findings obtained are that the colonial influence still imprinted on the person of the Karo people even though the occupation had long since ended. The data analyzed in this paper were taken from Japanese corpus data. The concept of ellipsis was taken from Quirk et al., (1985), Makino & Tsutsui, (1994), and Verhaar (1981). The ellipsis from Quirk et al (1985) was applied the concept of recoverability from the grammatical point of view: (1) textual recoverability, (2) situational recoverability, and (3) structural recoverability. The qualitative and synchronic descriptive method was employed in this study. A qualitatively descriptive method was employed to explain and describe the coordinative sentence, whereas the synchronic approach was used to cover the current language phenomena. The findings show that in the coordinative structure, ellipsis of the function of grammatical subject, ellipsis the function of predicate and ellipsis of the function of object took place. Ellipsis of the function of grammatical in the coordinative structure can be anaphoric or cataphoric. It is called anaphoric because the ellipsis takes place rightward, the controlling constituents are located in the first clauses and the controlled constituents are located in the second clause.
