The benefits, however, come at the cost of information security vulnerabilities introduced by data networks. Regulatory institutions, including the FAA, are aware that security requirements for network-enabled airplanes must be fully identified. Therefore, this paper focuses on wireless airplane health monitoring and management, and contributes a security framework to identify threats and system requirements to mitigate these threats. We also present challenges and open problems in enabling secure use of wireless sensor networks for health monitoring and control of commercial airplanes.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-08-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130102754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

System wide information management (SWIM) is regarded as the information architecture that provides the information management capabilities needed to realize 4D operations. To benefit from SWIM, network centric applications are needed. In this paper, air traffic control is viewed from the perspective of control theory. The information management concept that is realized by SWIM and the applications has to ensure that the different control loops are closed in a stable way. This paper discusses the research performed in the area of two such applications. The first one is an on-board application in the commercial aviation domain that provides 4D trajectory data to the SWIM environment. The second one is an application in the military domain that aims to achieve integrated and coherent cooperation using the network enabled capabilities offered by SWIM.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"75 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115739720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The next step must be an \"Open Skies multilateral agreement\", also called an \"Open Aviation Area\", which may shape transatlantic traffic. Within such \"Open Aviation Area\", which is marked by the absence of restrictions upon the operation of air services operated within the area, competition must be regulated. The major aims of certification of any GNSS would be to establish minimum guarantees of quality (as expressed in such dimensions as accessibility, availability, continuity, integrity, reliability and accuracy). Furthermore, technological advances in the areas of CNS/ATM (Communications-Navigation-Surveillance/ Air Traffic Management) and decision support must be leveraged to evolve a modernized Airspace System: from an Airspace System service provider perspective, space and aviation operations must be seamless and fully integrated in order to continue to provide efficient service to all Airspace System users. This paper provides a broad view on the Transatlantic Common Aviation Area initiatives in air navigation, highlighting legal lessons learned in the frame of the \"modernization of the European Airspace\".","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122401904","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents an analysis of the market potential for air taxi services planning to operate VLJs, since this business model is considered by many to be the cornerstone of future VLJ demand. The methodology employs a spreadsheet-based mode choice model that compares travel by VLJ air taxi, car, and scheduled airline. A Monte Carlo simulation analysis suggests that individuals from high income households traveling short distances (about 300 miles) are most likely to select the air taxi option. The probabilistic results are applied to a base of annual person trips to obtain a VLJ air taxi forecast of 15.6 million person trips in 2016. The approach is extended to estimate a median fleet size of 3,820 VLJs required to serve this demand. These results suggest that the most aggressive VLJ forecasts are least likely to materialize.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128628112","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nowadays, the required functions to perform these computations are an integral part of route planning tools, leaving the human operator in the role as a decision maker. Research into human decision making in the monetary domain shows that in certain situations, humans tend to be risk averse when it concerns potential gains and risk seeking when it concerns potential losses. The research described in this paper aims to determine to what extent these biases can be found in route-planning related decisions. An experiment has been conducted to compare decision making in the monetary domain with decision making in the military domain. The results concerning the monetary domain were mostly consistent with the expected biases. Especially risk aversion in decisions that imply potential gains showed up clearly in the data. In the military domain, the two most important findings were that decision making is dependent on many factors that do not play a role in monetary decisions. Participants' interpretations of different situations varied greatly, resulting in (close to) fifty-fifty distributions in their preferred answers. However, participants tended to agree more often in cases where the protection or saving of own troops was involved. In these situations, participants displayed risk-seeking behavior to prevent the loss of lives.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130542266","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Digital data bus system using controller area network (CAN) for small aircrafts has improved the accidental event by adding time trigger (Lin et al., 2006). However, the predictability on data transmission requires enforced. The arbitration mechanism in CAN has awarded higher priority to those high frequency data or important real time data. Some deficiency may cause unpredictable delays on lower priority message and data lose when high bus load situation. To integrate time trigger into time triggered CAN (TTCAN) chip can improve the time scheduling in periodic data transmission (Shaheen et al., 2002). Consequently, the complexity in time sequence synchronization has brought in significant load in development. This research method classifies the data frequency and assigning the concept of time to integrate hybrid data bus system. The research goal uses concept of TTCAN on dual bus CAN system and improve disadvantage of CAN.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123825706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As communication technology improves, organizations can operate over wider distances and can even assemble operational components on an ad hoc basis to meet requirements of a specific objective. Future air traffic communication studies are already discussing to operate IP networks that are combining voice and data transport. The problem is that although voice and data are using a common infrastructure, they remain separate at the application level. Probably, some service providers have already enjoyed reduced network infrastructure and operational costs by merging voice and data transport, but the majority may have failed to realize the significant cost, productivity and service differentiation capabilities that converged, collaborative applications could bring. This paper elaborates mechanisms needed for a robust and globally interconnected network environment (including infrastructure, systems, processes, and people) in which data is shared timely and seamlessly among users, applications, and platforms. Such an environment enables substantially improved situational awareness and shortened decision making cycles. Stepping ahead, our contribution discusses standards making application or service convergence a reality.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123875257","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The efficiency of the network management suit is measured by the number of parameters/components handled by the application while making a decision. In the case of Internet enabled aircrafts, along with network security, even the aircraft safety needs to be considered as a factor while designing the network management suit. This requires the network management suit to monitor/analyze the aircraft related data (avionics data, physical security parameters, etc.) while determining the proper functioning of the overall system. In this paper, the authors present a framework for network management suit that, along with network health, monitors inputs from avionics, video surveillance system, weather monitoring system, and manual pilot alarms and based on the situation, reconfigures the onboard networking devices to stream appropriate flight critical data to the ground station. The proposed framework attempts to provide a comprehensive user interface for the flight health monitoring crew with all the relevant data.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124213076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this research, the route-conformance monitoring function was hosted on an experimental electronic flight bag (EFB) and evaluated in a simulated operation. A datalink was used to load the route from air traffic control (ATC). The current research addresses the design, integration and evaluation of a manual input option and the comparison with a previously developed voice input option. Results suggest that with the manual input option it is possible to enter the route during its reception (i.e. instructions from ATC via R/T) and perform the readback based on the data presented on the EFB. This way, the integrity of the route used by the conformance-monitoring function is assessed by ATC.","PeriodicalId":242641,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE/AIAA 26th Digital Avionics Systems Conference","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123608406","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
