Trends for response rates and refusal rates are studied as well as the components of response rate, namely, contact, cooperation and completion rates. In addition other rates, including answering machine, busy and no answer are studied. While refusal rates declined over the six year period, contact and cooperation rates significantly declined causing response rates to decline. Answering machine rates and busy rates also showed a significant increase over time. Finally, correlation’s among the variables of interest are presented. The response rate is negatively correlated with the busy rate, the answering machine rate and the no answer rate. Implications of the above trends are discussed.

Consequently, the fixed telephone coverage has started to decline; almost 10% of households are now available only over the mobile phone. With this, Slovenia positions itself as a typical EU country and can serve as a case study for issues related to mobile phone interview surveys. The paper addresses the general context of mobile phone usage and the calculations of mobile phone coverage rates. It also discusses the non-coverage problems related to mobile and mobile-only households. It is shown, that even with a relatively small non-coverage the corresponding estimates can be considerably biased, as in the case of the unemployment rate in the Slovenian Labour Force Survey. There are severe methodological problems with mobile phone interview surveys. In particular, a pilot mobile phone survey confirmed the disadvantages of costs, frames and response rates, at least when compared to fixed telephone surveys. In addition, the response rates are dramatically lower for less intensive mobile phone users. The comparisons of respondents in mobile phone surveys with the corresponding sub-samples in Labour Force Surveys and in fixed telephone surveys revealed some specific discrepancies in the socio-demographic structure. Due to non-coverage, the respondents in the mobile phone survey tend to be younger, higher educated, from larger households and are represented by a larger share of males. The non-response mechanism can additionally reinforce these effects (e.g, gender), however it can also cancel them (e.g., age, household size). Special complexity arises from the diverse effects of the non-response components (refusal vs. non-contact). According to their attitudes towards mobile phone use, mobile phone users compose three distinct segments (intensive pragmatic and emotional users, less intensive users) that may behave differentially also during the mobile phone survey process. \u0000 \u0000 \u0000

Simulation experiments were conducted to compare the power of the parametric F-test with the non-parametric Kruskal‒Wallis (KW) test in normal/non-normal, equal/unequal variances scenarios and equal/unequal sample group means. Each of these 184 simulation experiments was replicated N = 1000 times and power obtained for both F and KW tests. The Shapiro‒Wilk's test for normality and Bartlett's/Levene's tests for homogeneity of variances was conducted in each experiment. Results show that the power of the KW tests outperformed those of the F-tests in the 92 (85/92) non-normal cases. Although the power of the F-tests is higher than those of the KW tests in 85 out of the 92 experiments under normality assumptions, these differences, in all cases in this study are not significant (p > 0.05) using both t and sign tests. Based on these results, this study favours the KW test as a more robust test and safer to use rather than the F-test especially when the distributional assumptions of data sets are in doubt.

We propose an approach based on combining the results obtained by applying different methods for estimating time-varying Hurst exponent and apply it to Euro exchange rates. Firstly, we fit AR-GARCH models to every time series to reduce bias of rescaled range analysis method. We only consider model with residuals, in which no autocorrelation and ARCH effect is present; among them we choose the model with the lowest value of the Bayesian information criterion. Afterwards, we estimate the Hurst exponent from the residuals by means of the rolling window approach using four different estimation methods. Vectors of Hurst exponents are clustered for each of the four cases and the clusters are compared in order to obtain the final clustering.

Without research, we cannot possibly know what specific tasks we can undertake or what social work goals we can achieve when it comes to helping situations. In recent decades, social work with older people has directed research toward the area of exploring the needs of people in long-term care, which has been shaped primarily by the COVID-19 pandemic. Measures taken to contain the pandemic have limited or even prevented opportunities to research the real-life situations of people in long-term care. Social work research with older people was limited in its ability to determine the impact of the pandemic on the lives of older people, which was a violation of fundamental ethical values in providing tailored care in the new life situations of the most vulnerable, frail, and needy members of society. This paper highlights the importance of social work research that addresses the immediate living environment in order to fully understand people's life situations that impact the development of both the profession and the science of social work. However, the barriers to research due to pandemic containment measures have impacted the profession and the development of social work science.

It is one of the basic research methods used in a holistic and hermeneutic approach to the development of social work theory and practice. The method is a combination of qualitative research methods, techniques and approaches mainly including grounded theory, ethnography and action research, which, depending on the research aims, is further complemented with a set of methods from quantitative research methodology. The decision about the choice of research methods and procedures combined within the Rapid Assessment of Needs and Services method depends on each individual research situation and the aims and objectives of the concrete research project. Depending on the aim and objectives of the Rapid Assessment of Needs and Services, one of the methods can be prevalent or all methods can be represented in an equal share or in combination with other social scientific research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, which is presented in this article with the examples of three studies on long-term care in Slovenia.

Block is a part of the network that contain (possible) ties from the units of one cluster to the units of another cluster (or ties within a cluster). Typically, sum of squared deviations from the mean is taken as the measure of variability (non-homogeneity). The paper presents the results of a simulation study that applied several methods for this problem to binary networks generated according to structural equivalence. Several versions of homogeneity generalized blockmodeling (using a relocation algorithm), a k-means-based algorithm, and an indirect approach are compared. Since all of the methods being compared try to optimize the same criterion function, this and the Adjusted Rand Index are the main criteria for the comparison. All methods (except the indirect approach, which is not iterative) were given the same amount of time to find the best possible solution. The overall conclusion is that the k-means approach is advised in most cases, except when smaller networks (200 units) are being partitioned into larger number of clusters, in which case the homogeneity generalized blockmodeling is preferred.

Blockmodeling is one of the most commonly used approaches in the analysis of (social) networks, which deals with the analysis of relationships or connections, between the units studied (e.g., peoples, organizations, journals etc.). The R package blockmodeling implements several approaches for the generalized blockmodeling of binary and valued networks. Generalized blockmodeling is commonly used to cluster nodes in a network with regard to the structure of their links. The theoretical foundations of generalized blockmodeling for binary and valued networks are summarized in the paper while the use of the R package blockmodeling is illustrated by applying it to an empirical dataset.

Multimedia learning material is often recommended for and adopted by students with dyslexia. However, there are not many empirical studies that support the benefits of multimedia for this group. Due to the variety of difficulties that these students may experience, multimedia may not be the most appropriate type of online content for them. Our study aimed to identify the most appropriate combination of multimedia content for them from among three commonly-used types of online learning resources. An experiment was conducted in which 27 students with dyslexia learned about a topic under one of three conditions: a scroll-down website with onscreen text and static pictures, video lecture and subtitled video lecture. No significant differences in learning outcomes were found between the groups. However, the effect sizes indicated the superiority of the website over the other two conditions. Because of the small sample size, further research is needed.
