The system uses ultrasonic pulses for the recognition of a plane code suitably attached to the object. The code includes areas of different reflectivity, which are identified by the presence of echo pulses or not. They are modified lead titanate ceramics (Pb.Sm) (Ti,Mn)Oj and (Pb,Ca)(Ti,(Col/ 2W1/2)03 +MnO.NiO and lead zirconate ceramics modified by adding small amounts of Pb(CERAmnl/3 Nb2/3 )O3 and PbTiOj. In these ceramics, the planar electromechanical coupling factor kp is much less than the thickness dilatational electromechanical coupling factor kt (kt/kp >lo). These ceramics are especially useful for use in high-frequency array transducers. In contrast to ordinary ceramics such as PZT, the width-to-thickness ratio of a transducer element (w/t) can be larger than unity. The features of a high-frequency linear array and of single element ultrasonic probes employing modified lead titanate ceramics are also described.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125391761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The probe measures the amplitude and phase of the normal surface displacement, corrected for surface reflectivity variations. The optics used to focus the laser beam on the SAW substrate are also used by a video imaging system. The laser beam is visible in the image, simplifying alignment of the probe. A number of practical filter configurations were investigated, including bidirectional apodized IDT’ s, mu1 t i -strip couplers, and unidi rect ional transducers. Wavefront distortion (sometimes referred to as apodization loss) was observed in bidirectional transducers. The beam spreading properties of both tracks of a multi-strip coupler were studied. The directionality of a unidirectional transducer was directly measured by making scans through the axis of the transducer. The probe has also been used to identify misoriented substrates (which cause beam walkoff) and to study excess attenuation.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126207541","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method performs a non-linear filtering on the echo signal to reduce greatly the interference effects between overlapping echoes - correlated noise, as well as uncorrelated electronic noise. We can then evaluate the local frequency both accurately (i.e. without bias by noise) and efliciently (i.e. with a small data set). This analysis is carried out on the Wigner time-frequency function calculated from a segment of echo data. With the help of the singular value decomposition of thc Wigner distribution, we reject echo segments corrupted by interference and noise. In this way, correlated interference is suppressed much more efficiently than by averaging. We illustrate this approach on the traditional problem of estimating the attenuation slope from the downward shift in mean frequency with depth. Our analysis of simulated echoes shows that accurate estimates can be obtained from a single A-line. Moreover, we obtain the correct answer with two orders of magnitude less data than the conventional Fourier approach. The resulting savings in data acquisition time and computation time are substantial.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116100544","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An expression for the instantaneous phase shift in a reflected sinusoidal probe due to nonlinear interaction with an arbitrary pump waveform propagating in the opposite direction is derived. This i nstantaneous phase shift is proportional to the convolution of the pump waveform with the spatial d istribution of the nonlinear parameter B/A along the propagation path of the pump and interacting probe. If a linear frequency modulated (LFM) sinusoid is used for t he probe, then the pump interacts with the reflected probe at each point in space at a unique frequency . PI and PS backscatter measurements were made in a phantom consisting of glass beads in gelatin. PS “backscatter” measurements were made using a conventional 13 mm diameter piezoelectric receiver at a scattering angle of 170 ’. PI measurements were obtained by summing the power spectra from all elements of a pseudearray mimicked by scanning the same receiver apodized to a 1 mm aperture in 1 mm steps over the same 13 mm diameter aperture of the PS measurement. PS and PI backscatter transfer functions (BSTF) were compared on a site-by-site basis using quantitative indices. At all sites the BSTF obtained using PI detection was consistently larger in magnitude and exhibited smaller fluctuations with frequency than the corresponding PS BSTF. These results suggest that PI detection represents a means to reduce the number of measurements necessary to estimate backscatter from inhomogeneous media.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125121393","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Knowledge of acoustical behavior is desirable both from a fundamental point of view as to how specific relaxation processes depend upon the structural characteristics of molecules, and for design purposes in engineering applications. For special applications such as underwater acoustics, the combination of an often hostile service environment and constraints on desired physical and acoustical properties poses a difficult problem in polymer physics and chemistry. This paper discusses the role of physical acoustics in elucidating the correspondence between chemical composition of elastomeric materials and their acoustical properties, and illustrates this with examples from studies involving reinforcing fillers, variations in base polymers, and crosslinking systems. The theory and operation of automated systems for the measurement of the dynamic Young's modulus and bulk longitudinal modulus of polymers are also described.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121762214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
