The lens is composed of a number of concentric annular grooves of uniform depth formed on the radiation plane according to the theory of a Fresnel zone plate. Because of the simple configuration with no spherical surface, the planar lens operating at a very high frequency can be fabricated easily using the conventional photolithographic tech nique.Good focusing capability of the lenses fabricated for operation at 100MHz and 200MHz has been demonstrated through the experimental and theoretical examinations.Images of satisfactory quality have been obtained using the scanning acoustic microscope equipped with the planar lenses.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1991-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134255086","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The propagation from a planar source is dependent on the total impulse response which is just the Green’s function. Computing the spatial transform of the point spread function gives the propagation transfer function which multiplies the spatial spectrum of the spatial excitation to produce the spatial spectrum of the propagated wave. The propagation transfer function can then be considered to be a time‐varying spatial filter. The results are valid for separable arbitrary time excitation and planar spatial distributions of the source. The solution is amenable to including the effects of a finite receiver. Results of different simulations using this method are included.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1987-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133691162","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The half-wavelength spacing of dots required leads to capacitative coupling between adjacent dots. The charge distribution induced on the dots by the passage of the SAW is presented including the coupling. The 180 degree SAW reflectivity of the dots and the SAW velocity perturbation through the dot array are given for a range of dot sizes. These are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results. The work establishes that the method of analysis can form the basis of the design of 180 degree reflective weighted dot arrays, allowing them to be implemented through varying dot density and/or by varying dot dimensions.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"125 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116166665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Velocity measurements of Lamb waves in a variety of thin plates will be described and compared with the computed dispersion in an isotropic plate. Velocity measurement is obtained through the Acoustic Material Signature technique (AMS). Symmetric Lamb wave velocities in a Cu sheet and of the antisymmetric Lamb wave in a thin Si membrane are reported. A particular use of nondestructive diagnostics with Lamb Waves is in materials elastic property investigation. The excitation of Lamb waves of both symmetry groups in sheets of metallic glass has been achieved. From the measurement of velocity dispersion in both modes, the sheet thickness and computed dispersion curves, it is shown how elastic material properties may be obtained.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-10-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127765770","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The device incorporates edge-bonded transducers for wide bandwidth and short (15 ns) pedestal of delay. Modifications to the Si circuit are reported here, which both increase the programmable RF bandwidth to 100 MHz and provide means of increasing the programmable tap on/off ratio to 30 dB. This filter has 350 metal-oxide-silicon (MOS) analog sampling fingers spanning 1/5 microsec. of delay. The varactor inherent in each sampling finger provides programmable tap weighting; a digital shift register controls programming FETs that connect each MOS varactor tap to a common programming voltage line. The 100-MHz bandwidth results from doubling the number of taps by the addition of a 2-to-1 analog multiplexer to the FET array.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125518896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results invariably showed that the initial slope of acoustic natural velocity variations, with respect to net induced magnetization parallel to the stress axis, is positive under tension and negative under compression. The results of current measurements in railroad rail steel having about 0.68 wt percent carbon content are typical for medium range carbon steels. The low-field natural velocity slope in this particular type of steel, which is almost zero when unstressed, becomes steeper with increased magnitude of stress in both directions. Hence, the nondestructive determination of the sign of residual stress in railroad wheels and rails is possible using this technique. This paper discusses the basic physical mechanism underlying the experimental observations and presents the results obtained in railroad rail steel.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126148791","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Siamese image is a bi-symmetrical view of the inner surface defect. Image construction geometry consists of two probes (i.e., source/receiver) operating either from opposite sides or the same side of the defect to be imaged. As the probes are scanned across a lower surface connected defect, they encounter two images - first the normal upright image and then the inverted image. The final integrated image consists of two images connected along their baselines, thus we call it a ''Siamese image.'' The experimental imaging results on simulated and natural cracks in reactor piping weldments graphically illustrate this unique technique. Excellent images of mechanical fatique and thermal cracks were obtained on ferritic and austenitic piping.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1985-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123615483","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a simple physical model for the material properties which govern the thickness-mode oscillations in thin plates of PZT-rod/polymer composites. We consider the case where the lateral periodicity of the rods is much smaller than all relevant acoustic wavelengths. Expressions are derived for the effective material parameters in terms of the properties of the constituents. The composites' properties can then be tailored to device requirements by choosing appropriate components and by varying the volume fraction of piezoceramic. Our analysis reveals the need for a trade-off between the desired lower acoustic impedance and the undesired smaller electromechanical coupling that occurs as the volume fraction of piezoceramic is reduced. The predictions of this model are in good agreement with measurements made on rod-composite plates containing 5 to 35 percent PZT.","PeriodicalId":240321,"journal":{"name":"IEEE 1985 Ultrasonics Symposium","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122287206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
