In 1935, Higini Anglès, a musicologist of recognized prestige, made them public and since then, they comprise the songbook of Sant Joan de les Abadesses, the unique troubadour catalogue in Catalonia including both the text of the songs and their equivalent musical notation to be performed. From that moment on, the manuscript has been studied in many occasions from a linguistic and musical point of view. The manuscript, currently preserved at the National Library of Catalonia, includes some other text passages of legal topics which we analyse in depth because they delimit the exact chronological period of the song writings. Our study, therefore, has been focused on three main purposes. In the first place, we revise the contributions made so far regarding the description of the document. Next, we build up the archivistic history of the manuscript, from the moment it was discovered until it was deposited in the library mentioned above. Often viewed as marginal, these texts have not been adequately analyzed for whatthey can tell us about the use of Occitan as a literary language in Italy at the end of the thirteenth and the beginning of the fourteenth centuries. Instead of casting them as unoriginal, derivative, or linguistically incorrect attempts at Occitan composition by foreign poets, this article considers their originality, innovation, and the transformations they may have undergone in their transmission history. L’insult en la vida política d’una ciutat medieval","authors":"Eduard Juncosa Bonet","doi":"10.33115/UDG_BIB/MSR.V18I0.22584","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.33115/UDG_BIB/MSR.V18I0.22584","url":null,"abstract":"Abstract - Apart from the considerations set out by jurists, moralists or sarcastic poets about cursing in the late Middle Ages, the main purpose of this article is to analyse the use of the insults («bad words, dishonest and offensive»), through the direct study of municipal sources and court proceedings, in the social and political life of a Catalan city within this period, focusing on the analysis of the insult’s variants, the situations where it was used, those targeted by it and some of its resulting consequences at every turn. Despite the frequent attempts to restrict or forbid its usage so as not to «stray away from good morals», blasphemy and derision became a rather common means of attack, predominantly in lawsuits and in convulsive contexts. Nevertheless, the sanctions imposed on offenders varied extensively, ranging from a simple request for pardon to fines, loss of rights, and even punishment by death. The maldit is a type of moral, satirical form, which aims to attack through satire a specific person or group. In their definitions, the treatises place maldit and the literary concept of satire under the scope of sirventès. Also, they point out a difference between general and particular maldit or maldit especial. Like the rest of the inhabited centers in the Cantabrian coast, this town was a rural space: one of the so-called aldeas (small towns) or costas bravas (rough coasts). When the need to articulate, arbitrate, trade and dominate, led to the kings of several kingdoms to call them villas. This might be interpreted as a mere declaration of intent. The answer may perhaps be found in the tradition of Occitan planh and its reception in Catalonia. Only 6 poems, out of 45 texts, deal with a more intimate and private affective dimension (4 planhs for the death of midons; 2 for the death of a friend) and all of them are (also or only) transmitted by troubadour manuscripts compiled in Catalan lands, especially MS Sg, which could constitute a further stage of the materials to which the author of the treatise had access. Documentary evidence supports, then, the hypothesis that, in Catalonia, the lyric type of planh ‘for the death of the Lady’ must have been one of the topical variants of this lyrical composition preferred by readers and compilers of troubadour manuscripts.
