Indeed, the two main characters are similar in behavior and evolution, despite the fact that the two novels are fundamentally different stylistically. However, the two books share one common theme: the last days of World War II in Central Europe. The analysis is divided into three parts. First, the authors’ historical, national, and bibliographical contexts are analyzed with the aim of identifying their and their novels’ situation and impact on their time and respective societies. Then, a comparison of the two novels from the point of view of style and literary genre is made to establish what differentiates them. Finally, the author of this article compares the characters of Maciek and Danny, especially their evolution and behavior, in reference to the concepts of the Peter Pan syndrome and the phenomenological theory of war from the so-called “sixth heretical essay” of the Czech philosopher Jan Patočka. Finally, the conclusion of the article shows that through these characters, the same phenomenon of self-alienation is rendered perceptible for the younger generation at the historic turning point of the end of World War II in Central Europe.","PeriodicalId":239308,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Humanistyczny","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121086293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper is an introductory intervention into the topic, aimed at presenting how the call for decolonizing the museum sector may refer to museum objects kept in a country such Poland that did not have its own colonies. The argumentation is focused on reconstructing the history of the Klaatsch collection and the contemporary international context which may affect its future. The author argues that the Baltic Sea appears in the imagination of the majority of the country’s population primarily through images, and that a careful investigation of popular visual media – outdoor advertising, but most importantly cinema – allows one to capture not only the propaganda and rhetorical dimension of imperial and maritime politics but also the basic remodeling of space that happened in Poland at that time. Using the example of the 1927 movie Call of the Sea (dir. H. Szaro) and in reference to other cinematic productions of the period, the article attempts to characterize the development of ways of showing/seeing and locating the sea on the map and in the social imagination. The key dimensions of this representations are low artistic quality and superficiality, which are interpreted here not in aesthetic terms, but as a testimony to how the sea was present in the lives of the majority of Polish society at that time – namely as decoration, background, fantasy, dream, joke, rather than the experience of a transoceanic journey or even seaside holidays.","PeriodicalId":239308,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Humanistyczny","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130964643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The author recalls the absence of the sea in the imaginary of Polish modernity and follows the turn that took place after regaining independence: in the new Polish state, the short Polish coast tasked with fulfilling many expectations and carrying many meanings. The Polish Baltic Sea was expected to be industrialized and recreational, modern and natural, local and imperial. The text also deals with the topic of Polish colonial plans, which the author interprets primarily as an attempt to “export poverty” and solve social problems through their physical expedition overseas.","PeriodicalId":239308,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Humanistyczny","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126055506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For example, the figure of the “white Negro” was used by the Futurists as a figure signaling – at first glance invisible, but real – foreignness, non-privilegedness and anti-systemicity. “The Negro” in the Futurist narrative was an unidentified Other. His only distinguishing feature was his racial identity associated with a state of uncivilization. From the perspective of today’s sensibilities, shaped by years of development and application of postcolonial theories, this was an ambiguous figure: politically and ethically suspect. In this text, I argue that in order to understand it well and avoid presentist readings, it is necessary to see, if only in a brief and selective approximation, the discursive field of the scientific press and journalism of the time. The avant-garde and, more specifically, Witkacy’s tropical fantasies were provocations whose scale and nature may escape the modern viewer. Therefore, based on the sketchily reconstructed discursive background of the Polish interwar period, and the issues of race and European colonialism present in it, I will attempt to reach the meaning of these provocations at that time and understand the perverse game that the Polish avant-garde undertook with these themes. And against this background – to show the uniqueness of Witkacy, who, unlike his avant-garde contemporaries, showed the political nature of the opposition of civilization and savagery, complicating the colonial imaginary of his own era and formulating catastrophic predictions for the European future.","PeriodicalId":239308,"journal":{"name":"Przegląd Humanistyczny","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129966758","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most researchers who deal with the poet’s works sporadically, contextually and without a thorough examination of his entire legacy often reach for a random text source, many times without even being aware of the whole set of texts or the imperfections of existing editions.
