Civil wars, anti-regime protests, economic difficulties and climate change have forced large numbers of people to escape from their countries, to live as refugees or displaced from their homeland and to remain in a context of surveillance, uncertainty and insecurity. Media technologies and digital platforms contribute to the communication of family members and national communities in diaspora, give access to information and education. Thus, the aim of this paper is to describe the new experiences of sociability and education for children who have been, or still are in transition and temporary situation. Drawing on two ethnographic studies - one in 2005 on migrant children from Albania living in the agricultural area in Greece, and the other on Syrian refugee families staying in a refugee camp in Athens - the paper presents everyday media practices in the context of the mobility.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114374703","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Popular tourism destinations like the island of Crete have undergone devastating shocks. The impacts of coronavirus on tourism in Crete during the period 2018-2022 have been studied in order to investigate the gradual recovery after the end of the pandemic. The current work is important for the island's tourism industry, considering the large share of tourism in the island’s income and prosperity. The annual tourist arrivals in Crete during this period have been analyzed and compared with the tourist arrivals in Greece. The results indicated that tourist arrivals in Crete have been sharply decreased by 74.98% in 2020 compared to 2019 while in 2022 they have exceeded by 4.98% the arrivals of 2019. Tourism arrivals in Greece have been reduced by 78.22% in 2020 compared to 2019 while in 2022 they were still 9.66% lower compared to 2019. The present work is important for all stakeholders of the island’s tourism industry indicating the quick recovery and the revival of tourism in Crete in the post-pandemic period. The rapid recovery of the tourism industry in Crete can be attributed to the brand name of the island as a global tourism destination and its popularity and attractiveness to international travelers.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"96 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121557993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, this is not the case in the community of Pentalofos in Evros prefecture in Greece, where the wedding customs have stopped being celebrated, mainly due to the lack of new people in the community and therefore the lack of weddings. These customs are now experienced in a different way by the members of the cultural association of the community, who represent them outside of their context, in a different time and place. Thus, the aim of this paper is to study the wedding customs in the community of Pantalofos in the Evros region in Greece, treating their representation as a planned performance. The collection of research data was carried out with the ethnographic method, as this applied to the study of dance. For presentation and data analysis Geert’s model of ‘thick description’ was adopted, as in ethnographic method the analysis and interpretation of the data is done simultaneously. Finally, for the interpretation of the research data, the performance theory was used, according to which society can be seen in the light of a dramaturgical perspective, i.e. as a theater, where the performers unconsciously play multiple roles. From the analysis of the data it was found that the revival of marriage customs was a theatrical performance, which included an organizer, two coordinators and many actors. The women of the cultural association have functioned as actors with specific roles and the rituals which they performed was lost a degree of their character, but women experienced the performance of marriage rituals in a different way. For them, the wedding customs were a different experience, in a different reality.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130317579","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study explores Pakistanis’ lived experiences during the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, including the impacts of Covid-19 on their livelihood, as well as their perceptions and opinions of their government’s policy measures. Through a questionnaire survey of 1000 participants living in the cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi, this study found that livelihood, including food supply and household finance were main challenges facing many Pakistanis during the Covid-19 pandemic; and the level of vulnerabilities were tightly related to socio-demographic characteristics like gender, living arrangement, and sector of employment. Men are more likely to suffer from hunger, and men work in the informal sector and living in a multigeneration (or multi-nuclear household) tend to be more vulnerable than others. Almost all employed respondents reported income deduction and most of them reported the increase of household expenditure during the pandemic. The mixed opinions on the government’s Covid-19 measures and policies were associated to respondents’ socio-demographic characteristics. There were sharp gender differences as well. Men were more in agreement with the government’s policies than women, which implies a gender based information access disparity.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130556274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of the study was to investigate the influence of the provision of nutrition meals and learner participation in public primary schools in Makueni County, Kenya. This study was guided by an objective; to determine the extent to which the provision of nutrition meals influences learner participation in public primary schools in Makueni County, Kenya. Thus the study was grounded on a pragmatic paradigm that customizes both quantitative and qualitative methods of research. Descriptive survey and correlational research designs were employed. A Target population of 875 was considered which consisted of; County Education Officers, Sub County Education Officers, and Chairpersons- Board of Management, Headteachers, Teacher, and Learners in School feeding programme strategies. Yamane’s formula was applied to obtain the sample size of 275, and simple random and purposive sampling methods were employed to choose sample sizes from the population strata. Out of 66 questionnaires administered to learners in the school feeding programme in public primary schools, 58 were completed giving a return rate of 87.9%. Among 198 questionnaire given to school Headteachers, Teachers, and chairpersons-Board of management, 193 were completed, and a return rate of 97.5% was achieved. An interview guide and open ended questionnaire were employed to gather information. Null hypotheses were tested at α= 0.05 significance level and the outcomes were: There was a significant association between the provision of nutrition meals and learner participation in public primary schools in Makueni County, Kenya. Since P = 0.01<0.05 from the learners' perspective thus the study rejected the null hypothesis and concluded an association between provision of nutrition meals and learner participation in public primary schools in Makueni County, Kenya. However, there was an insignificant association between the provision of nutrition meals and learner participation in public primary schools in Makueni County, (P = 0.583 > 0.05) from head teachers, teachers and BOM chairpersons’ perspective, and hence the study failed to reject the null hypothesis thereby concluding there was no significant relationship between the provision of nutrition meals and learner participation in public primary schools in Makueni County. In view of the study outcomes and deductions, these recommendations were raised: School stakeholders, pertinent Government educational Departments, and Authorities need to improve governance and prudent management of nutrition interventions, including policy and regulations that ring-fence resources for the provision of nutrition meals to enhance learner participation in public primary schools in Makueni County, Kenya.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132325115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For that purpose, ethnographic research was conducted in three phases: a) data collection, b) data analysis and c) data interpretation. Data collection was based on observation and interviews, while data analysis and interpretation were conducted under the terms of “self-reflection” and “thick description.” In conclusion, action research is a method that has only been applied scarcely in Physical Education and not at all in Greek traditional dance (GTD), as this particular research method — by its nature — does not exclusively aim at improving the participants’ performance in one technique, but, instead, at interweaving theory and practice by redefining the relationship between the teacher and the student. Nevertheless, the research process under study highlighted the applicability of action research and its variety of prospects in the teaching subject of GTD in the context of PE, as the participants did not only learn “the dance” or “about dance”, but also “through dance”.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124954456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mechanism of power in the formation of collective memory can be seen through the process of censorship as a tool used to erase certain public perceptions during the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa Period. The preservation of power in the hands of Japan’s elites created control of the people in terms of what they should know, remember, and act according to the narration that fitted the agenda of these elites. This paper examines the process of the shaping of collective memory in Japan prior to the three periods from Meiji to early Showa. This study uses a novel by Yoko Ogawa titled The Memory Police as a sites of memory to examine the shaping of collective memory in Japanese society. This paper is a qualitative research and uses Foucault’s theory of power and Michels’ theory of elites, as well as Nora’s notion of sites of memory as theoritical framework. The research found that all of these aspects of power mechanism in a form of censorship in those three periods of Japan’s past and the role of elites that used their influence to eradicate informations contributed to the shaping of collective memory. Moreover, The Memory Police as a novel came as a sites of memory that belongs to the society that tried to resist and contest the official narration of Japan’s collective memory.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126350861","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to explore how Tom uses defense mechanisms for releasing traumatic tensions and protect self-image, the research tool used for the investigation is Crammer’s concept of defense mechanism instruments such as such as repression, reaction formation, and denial. The uses of various types of defense mechanisms by Tom mainly repression, reaction formation and denial help him live his life with an ‘illusion of being clean’ despite being a cheater, liar and murderer. The research not only corresponds to the hidden incidents that Tom emerges on but also other factors supporting to the use of defense mechanism. It digs out the reasons Tom blames or neglects others and lives in the illusionary world of ‘being clean’ that justifies the flaws in his behavior. The finding is that the central character, Tom is suffering from ego split and he is trying to get out from tensions and anxiety. It is expected that this paper stands as a reference to the scholars intending to research Hawkins further.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131057211","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are differences among all these types of public figures regarding their environmental awareness and activism. Despite substantial earnings coming from their salary or endorsements, pro-environmental actions do not seem to be part of the agenda of many high-paid athletes and environmental activism among professional athletes remains low. Instead of making a significant contribution to protecting the planet, many athletes invest their money in the acquisition of expensive objects or mansions, become businesspeople, or even squander their profits. Thus, this is a call for professional athletes to get involved in environmental activism and adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle.","PeriodicalId":238752,"journal":{"name":"European Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124543340","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These properties were taken over by the British and French during the First World War, 1914-1918. In the interwar years, 1919-1939, a good number of them were purchased and repossessed by the Germans who returned to West Africa after the war. Thus, the internment of German subjects in the Cameroons under the British mandate during the Second World War, 1939-1945, had implications for these German plantations. Earlier studies on the history of Cameroons and on the impact of World War II on West Africa have omitted this phenomenon. This paper is, therefore, designed to examine the staff question in the management of the German plantations in the British sphere of the Cameroons during the Second World War.
