Since Epperson described the first case in 1950, no more than about fifty cases have been reported world wide. Here we report two cases of primary uterine malignant lymphoma diagnosed according to Fox and More's criteria. One of the patients was a 39-year-old housewife who suffered from atypical genital bleeding. Hysterectomy was performed and histological examination revealed malignant lymphoma, diffuse, medium sized. Upon immunohistochemical examination, the tumor cells were positive for several antibodies against B lymphocytes and also for CD74 (LN2). The patient is currently alive and well after surgery. The other patient was an 80-year-old housewife who suffered from abdominal discomfort. Clinical examination revealed abnormal enlargement of the uterus and obstruction of the urinary tract. Eight days after admission, she died of general consumption, and autopsy was performed. The uterus was markedly enlarged with a tumor, which extended to the serosa of the intestine and the peritoneum, involving one lymph node. However, there were no other tumors in other organs examined. Histologically, the tumor cells were distributed diffusely throughout the entire uterine wall and were medium-sized lymphoid cells. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed a B-lymphocyte nature, with positivity for L26, CD20, CD22, CD74 (LN2) and sIgD (surface IgD), but both T lymphocytic and histiocytic markers were negative.","PeriodicalId":237003,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of the Reticuloendothelial System","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133264995","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The stromata of esophageal cancer were classified into four types by estimating stromal cells around the deepest invasive lesions of carcinoma nodule. The cases with stroma containing predominantly both fibroblasts and lymphocytes (type II or III) were good in prognosis.Electronmicroscopical examinations showed that cancer stromata were composed of various kinds of cells, such as fibroblasts, macrophages lymphocytes and “fibrohistiocytoid cells”, and cell to cell interaction between cancer cells and various cell types (especially distinct between lymphocytes and fibroblasts) were found.Immunohistochemically, the cases with abundant ferritin and fibronectin-positive fibroblasts, macrophages and “fibrohistiocytoid cells” around the deepest cancer lesion, had good prognosis. And S-100 positive-Langerhans cells were localized within cancer cell nests and in the stroma neighboring to the tumor nodules. The primary tumors, which were rich in Langerhans cells, had better prognosis. Mast cells were seen in various types of the cancer stroma, but rarely existed in the stroma filled, predominantly, with fibroblasts.Though lymphocytes had been regarded as one of the most important factors in stromal reactions, our findings lead to a conclusion that various cell types of stromata including fibroblasts, macrophages, “fibrohistiocytoid cells”, Langerhans cells and mast cells, as well as lymphocytes, play cooperatively in cancer immunology.","PeriodicalId":237003,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of the Reticuloendothelial System","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133549227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

He suffered from slight fever (38°C), general fatigue since December 25 in 1985. Thereafter, axiller and inguinal lymph nodes swelling was noticed. Because of systemic lymph node swelling with anemia, he was hospitalized in Nagai City Hospital 2 weeks later. Cervical, axillar and inguinal lymph nodes were excised. He was received chemotherapy (Adr, End. Prd. L-Asp). 6 months after, he was transfered to Yamagata Prefectural Central Hospital. In spite of chemotherapy, he died of a clinically suspicious perforation of alimentary tract in January 1986. Autopsy was not permitted. Resected cervical and inguinal nodes revealed scattered mononucleated Hodgkin's (H) cells and multinucleated Reed-Sternberg (RS) cells with intermingled lymphocytes, eosinophils and plasma cells, so they were diagnosed as HD, mixed cellularity (MC) type. Axillar node showed a diffuse proliferation of small and large mononucleated cells with prominent nucleoli, without diagnostic H cells and/or RS cells, and diagnosed as NHL, diffuse, mixed. Immunohistochemically, some of H cells and RS cells in cervical and inguinal nodes were positive for B1, MB1 and polyclonal cIgs (IgG, A, κ/IgG, A κ, λ). On the other hand, tumor cells in axillar node showed monoclonal cIg (IgG, κ). In the nodes of HD, there were small number of medium sized cells, which had a nucleus with prominent nucleolus and dispersed chromatin and were positive for B cell markers (B1, MB1) and polyclonal cIgs (IgG, A, κ/IgG, κ λ). LeuM1 was not detected in H cells, RS cells and diffuse lymphoma cells. This case was suggestive that some sort of HD was of lymphocyte origin and has some possibilities to develop a simultaneous progression to diffuse lymphoma.","PeriodicalId":237003,"journal":{"name":"Journal of the Japan Society of the Reticuloendothelial System","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116231734","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
