Noisy environments bear upon human brain, by limiting concentration abilities and by impacting the quality of sleep. Some recent works proposed participatory systems, based on common mobile devices, in order to sense and collect noise pollution over urban areas. Such an idea has been drawn on in this work to investigate some strategies for noise-sensing participation in an optimal/less-invasive way, by exploiting clients' adaptation on the strength of server-feedbacks and geographical vicinity among sensors. In particular, we designed, implemented and assessed NoiseHound, a mobile application for Android O.S platforms, which aims at detecting, quantitatively classifying and tracking noise pollution by taking into account the participatory aspects as parameters to improve sensing quality and save local resources such as, primarily, battery power and data exchanges over the Net.","PeriodicalId":236486,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics -Berlin (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132075838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To this end, the MPEG committee has installed a special task force to establish a standard for multi-view 3D coding. One focal point of our research work is on an efficient implementation of the rendering part of such a multi-view 3D system, because it is a computationally expensive task and it determines the final reconstructing quality. Our free-viewpoint DIBR algorithm is implemented with an off-the-shelf GPU that can be integrated in advanced 3DTV systems. We present the principal steps of a representative free-viewpoint DIBR and show the key differences between the reference software and our GPU implementation. One of those differences is the joint execution of signal processing blocks to share memory usage. Using a combination of the highly parallel programming architecture CUDA and a graphics API, we have achieved a real-time performance operating on 1080p HD multi-view video with a rendering quality that is comparable to the software implementation.","PeriodicalId":236486,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics -Berlin (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114246222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is based on ZigBee 2.4GHz wireless network protocol for easy configuration and management. Light dimmer switches are controlled by remote controller with capacitive proximity sensors instead of mechanical buttons for better user experience and improved functionality. Power consumption measured by smart outlets and power extension cords is monitored by home energy controller. It uses this information to perform user's defined operations. The system intelligence resides in the power saving recipes executed on energy controller triggered by sensors and events.","PeriodicalId":236486,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics -Berlin (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123506989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed architecture exploits dynamic cache-like buffer structure. Typically, every macroblock unit (MBU) fetches a constant amount of reference data from the external video memory for cache update. However, when the updated data is centered at a fixed position, e.g. considering a zero motion, hit ratio of the cache buffer updates tends to be abruptly dropped. To cope with this problem, an adaptive cache-like buffer shift algorithm was used. From our experimental results, it was demonstrated that the proposed algorithm successfully increased up to the maximum 15 % in cache hit ratio and raised the lowest bound of hit ratio to 85 %.","PeriodicalId":236486,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics -Berlin (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123468747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this environment, users are provided the transformed multimedia contents adequate to their devices. Our existing structure of transforming service is not designed to sharing the content with multiple users using a same type of devices. So, the CPU usage ratio becomes higher, even though many devices with same type connect to the transforming server. Experimental results show that the CPU usage ratio of content sharing mechanism for three users is improved over 50% compared to that of the environment without sharing content1.","PeriodicalId":236486,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics -Berlin (ICCE-Berlin)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-09-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132053194","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we discuss the upcoming requirements and argue why current in-car network designs are not suitable for future tasks.
