That is, at run time each task starts executing using its primary priority and is promoted if not completed at an intermediate deadline. We present counter-intuitive examples illustrating how difficult this scheduling problem is. We propose a preprocessing approach to remove from the scheduling problem lowest priority viable tasks as defined by Audsley's procedure. We revisit one solution called RM + RM conjectured optimal. We propose a procedure to compute promotion deadlines based on multiple simulations over an hyperperiod called FDMS. That solution has an exponential time complexity but an experimental success ratio of 100%. Then we propose a new sub-optimal solution to assign priorities called 1 /RM + RM along with a very simple promotion deadline assignment scheme called RML for which no simulation are required, the procedure is simple and the success ratio is close to 99.99%. We show that the method is fast and scalable to very large task sets which makes it ideal for practical applications.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116933404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To a certain degree they share the same architecture, technologies and protocols, and therefore, are facing the same challenges: guaranteeing security and privacy in hostile environments, dependability and especially availability at minimal cost based on limited resources. The threats are manifold, esp. wireless communication can be intercepted, messages can be modified, replayed or injected, nodes or parts of the network can be compromised. A Denial-of-Service (DoS) attack cannot only target the availability of the whole system but also be intended to exhaust the battery live of devices [1]. To counteract these threats in traditional IT systems and networks, established security methods are used based on symmetric and asymmetric cryptography and hashing.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126017031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To ensure proper temporal and spatial isolation, a highly privileged software component is installed to orchestrate the subsystems. VOSYSmonitor is such a solution, it enables the co-execution of two operating systems on a single System on Chip - A rich operating system, such as Linux, along with a safety critical operating system, fully isolated from each other using ARM TrustZone. But if we take a closer look at specific automotive scenarios (e.g., “displaying warning signs”), reveals that an interaction of the two operating systems might be desirable. In this paper we address this challenge. We present the implementation of a low-latency inter-world network channel. It is built around already existing primitives in both worlds, only implementing the physical layer of the network channel. This ensures a low complexity, meaning only minor modifications have to be made to both operating systems. To prove the feasibility of our design, we built a full prototype that enables a network communication between the two operating systems, while ensuring a proper encapsulation of the safety critical operating system. To validate low reaction times, the design is evaluated with respect to network latency. To complement the measurements, we also performed a number of bandwidth measurements. Finally, we thoroughly discuss potential threat scenarios arising from the network link and how they can be addressed with appropriate countermeasures.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"418 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117334632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially during early design stages providing measurable metric on the performance demands to implement a specified algorithm is required. Usually this includes a large amount of target dependency, like the chosen micro-controller platform. This work aims on providing a generalized method to estimate the processing time of a dedicated algorithm, when being run on a variety of hardware choices. The focus is on a fast exploration of the hardware design space in order to provide guidance for selecting a suitable processing platform.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114968165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our specifications required the deployment of the network using the MQTT protocol over an encrypted TLS connection. We focused on using sensor nodes with low-power consumption profile, as well as on the formalization of the MQTT protocol's basic elements, by clearly defining the topic/message scheme used across the network. In addition, we experimented on how to combine locally stored information with data from popular cloud-based platforms and also acquired results regarding the processing performance of the nodes using different data exchange formats and database technologies. Work in progress includes data preprocessing on the network edge targeting distribution of the processing power across the network and network-traffic limitation, and also big data post-processing on server side or on dedicated high performance nodes to reveal hidden data patterns.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130167357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The manufacturers of such microcontrollers have developed extensive model families, which have to be compatible with each other due to the same pin assignment and package form. This policy is intended to enable ECU developers to select a next larger type with more processor cores in the event of performance bottlenecks. It should be noted though that the additional processor cores increases the problem of competing access and thus also the Worst-Case Execution Time. This article identifies the impact of competing access on the performance of individual processor cores. For this purpose, three derivatives of the Infineon AURIX microcontroller family are compared and potential bottlenecks identified. Finally, recommendations are drawn up on the basis of these results in order to avoid such problems.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115407175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When implementing and integrating these systems, these latency requirements must be guaranteed e.g. by applying a worst-case analysis that takes all indeterminism and limited predictability of the timing behaviour into account. In this paper, we address the latency analysis for multi-rate distributed cause-effect chains considering static-priority preemptive scheduling of offset-synchronised periodic tasks. We particularly focus on data age as one representative of the two most common latency semantics. Our main contribution is an Mixed Integer Linear Program-based optimisation to select design parameters (priorities, task-to-processor mapping, offsets) that minimise the data age. In our experimental evaluation, we apply our method to two real-world automotive use cases.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"419 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125248034","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They support the power grid, the water supply, transportation systems and many other devices, where failure or undefined behaviour lead to risk for loss of life, danger to the environment and defective operational safety of production. Rigorous testing practices have assured reliable behaviour even for failure scenarios in their predictable environments. However, previously isolated systems have become connected to the Internet and expose an attack surface that is hard to predict. While the safety of high assurance CPS is well tested with a controlled residual risk, security risks will rise throughout the deployment of a system. Hence, this paper describes research for a testing methodology to tackle emerging threats and preserve certified security assurance.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"72 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132940225","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the state-of-the-art approaches require extra facilities for the visualization and positioning of the virtual objects in the real world. In this work, we propose the approach for video stream augmentation which relies solely on the positioning of virtual objects referenced to the absolute reference frame. This approach can be applied to a dynamic platform with six dimensions of freedom. For testing purposes, we design fully autonomous MR glasses based on low-power embedded systems and demonstrate the representation of a dot, line and cube in the glasses. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is successfully realized on the experimental testbed.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"532 ","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"113994366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Edge processing can mitigate the data deluge by extracting relevant information from image data on-device with low latency. This work presents an FPGA-based 20 kfps streaming camera system, which can classify regions of interest (ROI) within a frame with a binarized neural network (BNN) in realtime streaming mode, achieving massive data reduction. BNNs have the potential to enable energy-efficient image classifications for on-device processing. We demonstrate our system in a case study with a simple real-time BNN classifier achieving 19.28 us latency at 0.52 W power consumption and resulting in a 980x data reduction. We compare external image processing with this result, showing 3x energy savings, and discuss the used HDL/HLS design flow for BNN implementation.","PeriodicalId":236091,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE 13th International Symposium on Industrial Embedded Systems (SIES)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125915158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
