This study was carried out to determine the antibiotic susceptibility pattarn and molecular identity of enterotoxigenic Bacillus cereus strains isolated from food consumed by school children in Ilorin metropolis Methods: Bacterial isolates that were identified as Bacillus cereus (OQ235070), Bacillus cereus (OQ235071), Bacillus cereus (OQ235072), Bacillus cereus (OQ235073), Bacillus thuringiensis (OQ235074), Bacillus cereus (OQ235075) and Bacillus cereus (OQ235076) were obtained from culture collection from Microbiology laboratory, Kwara State University, Nigeria were used for this research. Antibiotic susceptibility test was carried out on the isolates using standard technique. Detection of resistance gene, plasmid profiling and curing, and detection of enterotoxigenic genes were done using standard microbiological methods. Results: All the isolates were resistant to minimum of two antibiotics before and after plasmid cur-ing. A total of 98 % of the isolates were susceptible to ofloxaxin, centamincin, pefloxacin, and augmentin while 90 % of the isolates were resistance to amoxylin, streptomycin, and chloramphenicol. Plasmid profiling shows that the bacteria harbored mega plasmid with equal size of 5000 bp. Curing removed all plasmid, presence of enterotoxin virulence gene nhe A, B, C and hbl C, D were observed but hbl A was not found. Conclusion: The Bacillus species studied were found to be multi-drug resistant and carried entero-toxigenic genes which were chromosomally borne.

This study was done to determine the level of awareness of the hepatitis B virus as a disease, the availability of its vaccine, as well as the vaccination rate among the study population. Methods: This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study, and it was done at the General Hospi-tal Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study population was adults aged 18 years and above attend-ing outpatient clinics. The sample size for this study was 377, with a male to female ratio of 128:249. The study instrument was a structured and semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire. The data was analyzed using Statistical Packages for Social Sciences IBM (SPSS) 21. Results: The overall level of awareness of HBV infection was very low (19.4%), only 38% of the participants knew HBV infection as a disease, while very few of them knew the causative agent (4.9%), and only 15.4% of the participants knew the transmission routes of the HBV. However, about half of the participants were aware of the existence of the HBV vaccine (50.8%). Only very few participants had ever received the vaccine as an adult, with a vaccination rate of 4.6%. There were statistically significant associations between HBV vaccination status, knowledge of the dis-ease, knowledge of HBV causative agent (P <0.001), and knowledge of HBV transmission routes (P <0.001). These factors positively impact vaccination uptake in this study. It was also observed that more young people were more likely to have received the HBV vaccine when compared to the elderly ones (P <0.001). Similarly, secondary education students were more likely to receive the HBV vaccine (P = 0.039). Conclusion: The awareness of HBV infection and the knowledge of the disease were very low, same with vaccination uptake. Young people and those with formal education would likely obtain the HBV vaccination.

The intricate interplay between lipid profile variables and weight-related outcomes plays a pivotal role in shaping cardiovascular risks among individuals with excess body weight. This study investigates the associations between lipid profile variables and weight-related indicators in a cohort of healthy, overweight adults, shedding light on potential implications for cardiovascular risk management. Methods: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome, risk factors, and related lifestyle in adult Myanmar citizens were examined in the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research Study (ICPSR146521) using prospective data. The patient’s lipid profiles and demographic data were statistically analyzed using the statistical MedCalc tool. Statistical significance was determined using a 0.05 p-value. Results: Results demonstrate that while BMI is influenced by multiple factors beyond lipid profile variables, waist circumference exhibits moderate association with these variables. Notably, triglycerides significantly correlated with waist circumference, suggesting a potential role in visceral fat accumulation. Additionally, the study highlights the impact of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels on body weight, indicating that higher HDL levels are associated with lower body weights among healthy overweight adults. Conclusion: This study provides comprehensive insights into the complex relationship between lipid profile variables and weight-related outcomes among healthy, overweight adults. These findings underscore the importance of weight management strategies for cardiovascular health and suggest potential avenues for targeted interventions. By understanding the interplay between lipid profiles and obesity, clinicians and public health professionals can develop more effective strategies to mitigate cardiovascular risks in this demographic

Feeding variations and species differences, among other factors, influence these individuals’ chemical and mineral components. The current study elucidated the nutritional composition of house cricket (Acheta do-mesticus) and dung beetle larva (Oryctes boas) collected in Osun State, Southwestern Nigeria. Methods: The nutritional composition of the two species of insects sampled randomly was determined following standard methods of the Association of Official Analytical Chemists. The ground crickets and beetle larvae were digested with HNO3 and HCl in a microwave digestion system; inductively coupled plasma-optical emission was used to determine the amounts of Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Iron, Copper, Manganese, and Zinc in the samples. Following a standard procedure, the amino acid profile was performed using a Biochrom30+ amino acid analyzer (Pharmacia-Biotech, Buckinghamshire, UK). Data obtained were expressed as means ± standard deviations of triplicate analyses and compared among the two insect species using Student’s t-test at p < 0.05. Results: Generally, the nutritional components of A. domesticus were higher than that of O. boas. The O. boas was not significantly higher (P> 0.05) in Iron (6. 83 ± 1. 80 mg/100 g dry matter) but significantly high-er (P< 0.05) in Magnesium (730. 94 ± 2. 64 mg/100 g dry matter) than A. domesticus. All Essential Amino Acids (EAAs) and Non-Essential Amino Acids (NEAAs) were present in the two insect species with varying concentrations. House cricket, however, has a significantly higher (P< 0.05) Arginine, Valine, Phenylalanine, Glutamine, and Glutamic Acid than O. boas. In this study, we evaluated facemask ownership and handling patterns during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ekiti State, located in southwestern Nigeria. Methods: We conducted an online cross-sectional survey among residents above age 18, within three Local Government Areas (Ado-Ekiti, Oye-Ekiti, and Ikole-Ekiti) in the State. Five hundred fifty-three respondents consented to the study procedures and completed the close-ended question-naire shared via social media. Data obtained were entered into Microsoft Excel Software and sub-sequently analyzed in SPSS 20.0 software for basic descriptive statistics. The association between variables was also examined using chi-square tests and the significant level was set at 95%. Results: Findings showed an ownership rate of 98.1%. Over half of the respondents, 305(57.5%), wore face-mask regularly 305 (57.5%), while 170(32.1%) occasionally wore masks and 55 (10.4%) rarely wore masks. Furthermore, majority of the respondents 470 (90.2%) wore facemask appropriately to cover both nose and mouth. However, about one-third of the participants 123(29.5%) wore facemask under their nose, covering only their mouth. Majority of the participants 308 (60.0%) touch their face and mask intermittently, and only 291(56.0%) clean their hands after removing their masks. In developing countries, food handlers, including meat sellers, are the primary determinants of food contamination due to poor regulatory systems for food hygiene. This cross-sectional study determined intestinal parasites’ prevalence and associated factors among meat sellers in Nigeria. Methods: Using convenience sampling, 139 meat sellers in four markets in Ilorin, Kwara State, were selected. Stool samples were collected from each participant using a clean and dry stool container. The stool samples were analyzed using direct smear saline and formal-ether concentration techniques. The parasites were identified and counted under a microscope. The primary outcome was the presence of one or more intestinal parasitic species in stool samples. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Chi-Square test, and binary logistics regression. Results: Of the 139 meat sellers in this study, 74(53.2%) were females, while 65(46.8%) were males. Most participants (43.9%) were in the age group 31-40 years compared to the age group 51-56 years (9.4%), with the least participants. The participants’ education levels varied, with those with primary education (46.8%) being the highest, followed by those with tertiary education (31.7%). Based on religion, 37 (26.6%) participants were Christians, while 102 (73.4%) were Muslims. 59.7% of the meat sellers haboured one or more intestinal parasites. The odds ratio for gender indicates that when holding all other variables constant, a female is 1.7 times more likely to have a parasite than a male. The odds ratios of those with primary and secondary education levels are 1.4 and 1.7, respectively, suggesting that despite the level of education, they were more likely to habour intestinal parasites. The age group did not significantly affect the presence of intestinal parasites (p>0.05). Conclusion: This study shows a high prevalence of intestinal parasites among meat sellers in Ilorin. However, the effectiveness of these control strategies relies on under-standing the insecticide susceptibility status of the targeted male and female mosquito populations. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the insecticide susceptibility status of male and female An. gambiae s.l. Popu-lations in urban Ilorin, Nigeria.\u0000\u0000Methods: Using WHO kits and protocol, adult male and female mosquitoes reared from the same larval col-lections from different sites were exposed separately to permethrin, deltamethrin, and alphacypermethrin insecticides. Joint insecticide susceptibility tests, involving exposures of equal numbers of male and female mosquitoes to each insecticide, were also conducted in anticipation of joint insecticide exposure on the field. Exposed mosquitoes were identified to species level.\u0000\u0000Results: Higher kdt50s (52.5-641.3mins) and lower mortalities (permethrin 39-62%, deltamethrin 57-68%, alphacypermethrin 44-60%), indicating higher levels of resistance, were observed for the females compared to the male (22.1-42.2 mins, 60-94%) mosquitoes. The percentage mortalities of males (71-94%) were sig-nificantly (P ≤ 0.043) higher than those of the jointly exposed females (39-62%). However, separately ex-posed male mosquito mortalities (60-81%) were not significantly (P ≥ 0.067) higher than the females (55-68%). All the male mosquito populations were resistant to permethrin (75-94% mortality), deltamethrin (60-82%), and alphacypermethrin (74-86%) insecticides after joint and separate exposures. Resistant male and female mosquitoes were identified predominantly as An. arabiensis (74-84%).\u0000\u0000Conclusion: Multiple pyrethroid insecticide resistance detected in the male and female mosquito populations indicates the potential ineffectiveness of pyrethroid-based swarm spraying, pyrethroid ATSB and ITNs in the study location

It is spread by eating or drinking food or water contaminated with the faeces of an infected person. Risk factors include poor sanitation and poor hygiene. This study presented a mathematical model with a media campaign component to evaluate the possible impact of media campaigns on typhoid fever awareness.\u0000Methods: Sixty-four We proposed a model based on the transmission dynamics of Typhoid disease, emphasizing the cumulative density of awareness programs for the disease. The total population at time t is denoted by N(t); which is subdivided into Susceptible S(t), Infected Class I(t), Susceptible Media Sm (t), Recovered, and Cumulative density of awareness program M(t), thus, N(t) = S(t) + I(t) + Sm(t) + R(t) + M(t). The study stresses that when media knowledge spreads among the general population, a section susceptible to infection becomes isolated from the infected ones. The equilibrium points of the model system were found, and stability analysis and sensitivity analysis were carried out. Numerical simulations used specific parameters to study their effects on media awareness.\u0000Results: It was discovered that typhoid fever could be eliminated with a test of time as R0 < 1. It was also observed that the model had a disease-free equilibrium. The results suggested that the ingestion rate is the primary mechanism that fuels typhoid fever.\u0000Conclusion: The simulations indicated that if individuals can take preventive measures against typhoid, there would not be any need for treatment. Some are brought-in-dead (BID) with unknown causes and contribute to hospital mortality statistics. This study aimed to determine the causes and patterns of death in the AEU of the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, Nigeria\u0000Methods: This was a 5-year retrospective study of all patients who died in the AEU of Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, including those brought in dead. The information needed was extracted from the case notes and entered into SPSS version 23 for analysis.\u0000Results: A total of 7,682 patients were observed during the study period, with 275 deaths repre-senting a mortality rate of 3.6%. One hundred and fifty-six (56.7%) patients were BID. The mean age was 50.8 years. Most deaths (n=233, 84.7%) were from non-traumatic causes, with stroke and heart failure being the most common causes. Head injury (3.3%) was the most common traumatic cause of death. The median interval from presentation to death was 5 hours (IQR 3 – 6). Most patients (n=54, 45.4%) died within the first 8 hours of admission. None of the patients underwent an autopsy. Hypertension and diabetes were the most common co-morbid conditions reported.\u0000Conclusion: Brought-in-dead patients were the most commonly recorded death pattern in AEU at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, and the overall mortality rate was 3.6%.
