The data were analyzed by using keywords and collocation analysis to map the closest association of functional paradigm to second language writing.  It was then reviewed manually and thematized based on the research questions as the framework. Based on a corpus of 46 Scopus indexed journals ranges from 2017-2022 this study reveals that the influence of functionalism paradigm does not directly affect to SLW. Functional paradigm spawned the concept of context which then be interpreted and manifested into functional linguistic approach. Thus, studies on SLW revolves around the application of systemic functional linguistics (SFL) to either teaching or assessing SLW. The elements of functionalism paradigm that affects to SLW are the basic assumption and the values of functional paradigm that perceived each variable in a text has a purpose. As an implication, second language writing composition using SFL focuses on text purpose and lexicogrammatical features. Functional linguists perceive language diversity in second language writing as functional, ensuring mutual intelligibility if communicative functions work effectively.","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"2 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140478252","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The design of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The data for this study constituted two speeches President Joko Widodo about crude palm oil (CPO) exports on two different occasions at State Secretariat website (https://www.setneg.go.id) that was obtained by copying and pasting. The speeches were analysed by using systemic functional linguistics methods that is focused to ideational metafunction (experiential meaning and logical meaning). The result of the analysis was both of speech Joko Widodo revealing the similarity. Speech A showed mental process dominant in experiential meaning and speech B also showed mental process dominant. Beside the similarity both of speech, Jokowi speech revealed the differential using participant (senser), speech A used word of pemerintah, and on speech B using word of saya. Using word of pemerintah was a form of Jokowi as President not wanting to be blamed when bad things happen in made crude palm oil’s policy. Therefore, using word of saya was imaging form of Jokowi, because his clause gave profit for his electability. Jokowi was very careful in publishing speech, word of very careful reflected as self-righteousness.","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"376 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140471178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper aims to contribute to the public's understanding and response to hoaxes, with a focus on literary and digital literary criticism. In this case, a careful and structured qualitative descriptive is used to identify a hoax phenomenon. This approach comes from two different perspectives. While literature analysis addresses the characteristics and nature of the information in question, other approaches involve empirical methods to examine the impact of language use on readers' perceptions and responses to hoaxes. One more example is the use of an online form that requires the use of a questionnaire that is unique to each individual. The results of the survey, which had 108 responses, showed that media literacy, intensive education, and mass media consumption were all important factors in achieving this goal. The results of this research show that there are various types of fabrication that are commonly found in the computerized period, and each has its own characteristics. One research focus is on political tricks, which are often used to influence public opinion or damage the reputation of political opponents through the spread of false claims about policies or statements taken out of context. The findings of the survey indicate that the mass media's literacy rate has increased as a result of the verification of information and analysis.","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"27 6","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140510504","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, many research focus on the application of comic translation instead of webtoon translation.  Due to this, the research focused on finding out the translation technique used to translate the onomatopoeia in Lore Olympus from English to Indonesian. This case study was employed to analyze and interpret the translation techniques used, with case study to analyze the onomatopoeia. Content analysis and purposive sampling method was used to interpret the data between chapter 1 to chapter 50. The result of this study showed a total of 356 onomatopoeias in English and 355 in Indonesian; direct onomatopoeia was dominantly used, followed by exemplary onomatopoeia, and associative onomatopoeia as the least used. Out of seven translation technique, four was used: equivalence was used 69.5% times, borrowing was used 17.37% times, literal translation was used 11.8% times, and modulation was used 1.3% times. These translation techniques were applied to achieve meaning transfer and naturalness for the readers. However, some issues were found, for readers reading the translated webtoon, which might affect their reading experience negatively: typo, loss in artist’s intended phonetic meaning, improper expression of message, etc. The research proposed some recommendations for future researchers and translators.","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"15 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140510525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

ChatGPT is an AI that can produce human-like text and has implications for education. This study explored eight Indonesian English teachers’ lived experiences in integrating ChatGPT in their teaching preparation. In-service teachers’ perceptions, emotions, pedagogical activities, decision-making, and teaching transformations were explicated from their lived experiences through one-on-one in-depth interviews. The data gathered was later analyzed through transcendental framework analysis. The findings highlighted teachers’ various perceptions. Some considered this AI as a useful tool to generate ideas and materials with the awareness of its limitations in human-like understanding. Further, teachers experienced both excitement and concern towards ChatGPT. The integration practice resulted in improved teaching planning among teachers while retaining the quality after thoughtful adaptations. Additionally, ChatGPT helped teachers provide a better learning approach and contextualized learning. Significantly, as ChatGPT becomes more widely accessible, further research is required to guide teachers on its wiser utilisation.","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"27 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140510578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The primary students do not speak English as their mother language, therefore it is quite difficult for them to acquire English fluently. Additionally, English in Indonesia is a foreign language that the children do not use in their daily life, particularly in rural areas. The preliminary study found that the primary students’ English score was under the minimum passing criteria which was 68, there was only thirty-four percent (34%) of students can achieve it. Thus, the use of teaching techniques was implemented to help the children to acquire better English. The purpose of this study was to examine how a snowball-throwing teaching method and youtube may be used to improve the vocabulary understanding of fifth graders. This study used collaborative classroom action research (CCAR). The results showed that the snowball throwing method and youtube can help students improve their vocabulary knowledge. Vocabulary tests got an average score of 93.6, with ninety-eight percent (98 percent) of students reach with the criteria. They were enthusiastic about utilizing this method to learn English. They were also able to work well in groups, and displayed excellent teamwork skills.","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"36 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140510852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through in-depth interviews, the research aimed to unravel the specific methods and instructional techniques these teachers utilized to nurture critical thinking in their students. The research emphasized an open-ended interview process, allowing for a nuanced exploration of the strategies employed by experienced teachers, with a focus on those possessing over 10 years of teaching expertise. The findings revealed that reading teachers, according to the constructivist principles outlined by Brooks and Brooks (2005), acted as facilitators, empowering students to independently construct their understanding of content. The constructivist approach emphasized autonomy, hands-on experiences, and cognitive language use in assignments. Teachers adapted lessons based on student responses, encouraged dialogue, inquired about students' understandings before presenting their own, and fostered experiences that challenged initial hypotheses. Despite challenges posed by standardized testing and ingrained educational approaches, constructivist principles proved effective in cultivating critical thinking skills. The research contributed valuable insights into the complex dynamics of critical thinking in reading instruction, advocating for student-centric and constructivist approaches in education. \u0000Keywords: Reading teachers’ perspective: students, critical thinking","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"56 15","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140510961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Austin (1962) stated that in uttering a sentence, a speaker is generally involved in three levels of speech acts, they are locutionary act, illocutionary act, and perlocutionary act. This study focuses on analyzing illocutionary acts in “Like Stars on Earth” movie. This movie teaches teachers and parents in the world about how to understand the aptitudes and limitations of a child. This study used descriptive qualitative method within the framework of applied linguistics, i.e., discourse analysis. In collecting data, the writer was watching and observing the utterances of dialogues in a movie. The writer selected the data from the characters’ utterances which are related to the topic, especially about illocutionary speech acts to the data sheet. Then, categorizing the data into types of illocutionary speech acts. This study was taking the appropriate utterances and omitting inappropriate utterances. There were  359 utterances found in the utterances that uttered by the main character in this movie. Types of illocutionary acts were directive 195 times, representative 106 times, expressive 39 times, declarative  7 times, and commisive 12 times. From the total of the data above, the directives act served as the dominant form among the five types of illocutionary acts. It shows that the main character often gives expression to the hearer  to do something.","PeriodicalId":232120,"journal":{"name":"SALEE: Study of Applied Linguistics and English Education","volume":"29 3","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140510768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
