Weather index insurance is being considered as a possible pathway towards sharing farmers’ risks. This paper analyzed the reliability of rainfall indexes as proxy for calibrating grain crop losses in designing index-based insurance product for farmers in Central-West Nigeria. Results reveal that two strongest correlated rainfall indexes in the development phase of maize are the second dekad cumulative rainfall climatology and cumulative rainfall below the pre-set 440mm threshold, however it was the third dekad cumulative rainfall climatology and consecutive dry days of total rainfall < daily 2.5 mm threshold in the reproductive stage. There is an overall weak statistical relationship between maize yield and rainfall indexes calibrated in middle savannah belt of Nigeria. This study provides a firsthand empirical validation that rainfall-based indexes are though fairly promising but not sufficiently measure actual farmers’ income losses, hence should not be regarded as a standalone safety-net for protecting smallholders. Careful consideration is required in developing appropriate weather indexes for designing index-based insurance product that will fully captured food crop losses significantly attributed to rainfall deficits, thus facilitate uptake in the semi-arid savannah zone of Nigeria.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130079712","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the variation in the direction of the results for different contexts, scales (macro and micro) and levels (households, individuals, etc.) highlights the need to bring these experiences together to guide the conduct of future investigations. Throught a systematic literature review, the main objective of this paper is to highlight the advances in research on fertility and reproductive behavior in response to disasters. The literature has shown differences results and conflicting justifications for the association between fertility and reproductive behavior in response to disasters that, to some extent, occur due to the diversity of disciplinary approaches and the lack of qualitative studies or with mixed methodologies (quali-quanti). There are still gaps in the direction of relationships and the mechanisms that justify them, whether by deliberate family decisions, impacts on health services or physiological issues. Latin American Region may make fertile contributions for debate due to the various disasters such as droughts, dam disruptions and the Zika Virus epidemic in Brazil, as well as conflicts and unstable situations in Colombia, Argentina and Chile.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128420827","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are mainly Neossols and Cambisols, decapitated by erosion and covered discordantly by a paleo-pavement. Considering climatic variations, erosion surfaces and recent soil dating, we understand that after long desert conditions in the Cretaceous (Post-Gondwana Surface) until the Paleocene (South American Surface), there was an abrupt climatic variation in the Eocene, in which hot and humid conditions formed the weathered mantles and the dismantling of the quartz veins from the underlying geological units (Supergroup Espinhaco). These conditions were also present during the Miocene, disappearing in the Pliocene, where the installation of a new desert climate promoted the disappearance of vegetation and the consequent erosion-decapitating of soil profiles. In this context, the aforementioned regional paleo-pavement was formed and interpreted as contemporary to the Surface Velhas. Over it, during the Quaternary, countless peatlands were formed, suggesting mild regional climatic conditions.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"123 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124646185","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, the two indexes were calculated for the three images, then these maps were reclassified from the pixel range into four classes using the field and MAPBIOMAS project as the criteria. Following the maps of the CBERS-4 indices were compared with the Rapideye-3A correspondent. The same was done with landsat-8 maps. All processes were carried out with images from May 2015 in ArcGIS. CBERS reported results for NDVI similar to Rapideye, but SAVI presented errors. NDVI and SAVI results from Landsat image showed outliers when compared to CBERS and Rapideye data. The CBVI-4 NDVI difference maps indicated an approximation with the Rapideye results demonstrating the quality of the first, despite its lower resolution. The SAVI results were not satisfactory, either by error (CBERS-4) or due to very different values from the reference satellite, probably related to the use of a constant L unable to portray the variety of vegetation.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"23 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114118928","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this scenario, the article analyzes IG of Honey from Aroeira do Norte de Minas as a social construction, the result of an arrangement involving organizations and institutions that articulate at regional and local level. The empirical research was carried out through the application of a semi-structured questionnaire with representatives of associations, cooperatives and support institutions. The survey results indicate little participation of beekeepers in the discussions and the lack of knowledge about the operationalization of the IG. The top-down IG registration strategy was led by public government entities that operate in the region. The scenario shows that Associations and Cooperatives seek to build new markets for fractionated products with health, organic and IG certifications, in order to obtain better remuneration for the product.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129514565","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais estate, located in the upper Rio das Velhas basin, has used watersheds as territories for planning environmental sanitation at the public policies since the late 1990s. This study aimed to integrate water quality and human health indicators in 10 urban watersheds located at the Belo Horizonte Metropolitan Region. We tested the hypothesis that the health of human populations living in urban sub-basins is possibly related to water quality, and that water quality, including biotic integrity of benthic macroinvertebrate communities (richness and relative abundance) is influenced by land use. Physical and chemical parameters of water quality, biological metrics of benthic macroinvertebrate indicators, human health metrics (infant mortality and hospitalization due to childhood diarrhea), and the conditions of land use (vegetation, impervious area and proportion of streams in natural channel) were analyzed through general linear models. The results showed that the increase in cases of hospitalization for childhood diarrhea in the period from 2005 to 2008 were related to water quality (R2 = 0.35; p < 0.05), due to the decrease of dissolved oxygen in the water. The number of benthic macroinvertebrate taxa resistant to pollution varied positively with the proportion of impervious areas and with the proportion of canalization in the river beds (R2 = 0.63; p < 0.01). It was evidenced that the water quality is associated with the occurrence of diseases in the human population and with the disordered land use in the studied watersheds at the upper Rio das Velhas basin. Growing public investments in sanitation (Goal 2030) are urgent for the improvement of human and environmental health, which may bring benefits to the human population in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte city.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"1867 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131382285","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The area flooded by the Irape plant reached seven municipalities of the Jequitinhonha river upper course, Northeast of Minas Gerais, resulting in the relocation of approximately five thousand people and affecting thousands of inhabitants living in the lakeshore. The long resistance process of the affected population achieved fundamental rights throughout the relocation course; however, it did not impede the great socioeconomic, cultural and political losses that happened during the violent implantation, which sought to legitimize itself by the fact of the development promotion in the affected regions. From a qualitative methodology, we identified the consequences of the enterprise through interviews with representatives from different society sectors. The consequences caused by Irape are diverse and complex. The dam changed the population's relations with natural resources, frustrated different societal segments in terms of job creation, income and tourism, and strongly pressured ways of life into peasant communities.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127291983","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This scenario has undergone significant changes since that date, with an intense population flow due to a high degree of commercialization that occurred after the mining crisis. The aim of this study is to analyze the particularities and the results of the occupation that occurred in the Mucuri Valley from the second half of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. The Mucuri underwent a colonization process with its large-scale production based on coffee production, later, on livestock. The agrego was the main labor force of medium and large rural properties, used for uninterrupted deforestation for the benefit of crops and pasture. As a result, I find that the predatory exploitation of the Mucuri forests combined with an expressive contingent of households in miserable conditions generated wealth for rural landowners, but did not stimulate technological investments typical of the capitalist model, bringing through the press a representation of the ambiguous region, coexisting prosperity and ruin.","PeriodicalId":231740,"journal":{"name":"Revista Espinhaço","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128387986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
