Focusing on libraries outside of a university or museum context, this paper shows how research methods and library concepts converged and diverged. The years after 1900 and prior to World War I, were particularly rich in terms of disputes over the principles of library organization, shelf ordering systems, and appropriate classification for art literature. Furthermore, Aby Warburg contemporaneously conceived his individual library concept based on the insight that ordering literature – in a highly unconventional manner – and gaining knowledge are closely interrelated. All in all, art history and art libraries were subjected to the same dynamics of conceptual development in these decades, in contrast to later times. Par son regard tourne vers une tradition grandiose, elle est sans nul doute aussi une institution cruciale de la memoire collective. Et cependant il suffit qu’un usager, ou encore qu’un lecteur entre en jeu, pour que cette situation se voie aussitot radicalement changee et que tout soit en mouvement ! La configuratio et la collocatio, le classement des livres et leur contenu (ordonne), tout se trouve determine a partir de la dans la mediation au lecteur et a son appareil de perception sensible, son savoir, sa memoire et les formes de ceux-ci. Pourquoi les bibliotheques (d’art) sont-elles si aptes a remplir ce role ? Du fait de la specificite des livres d’artiste, la collecte, l’inventaire et la mise a disposition pose des exigences particulieres aux bibliothecaires. La bibliotheque en tant qu’institution prestataire de services offre les meilleures garanties pour des conditions de consultation optimales. Les livres d’artistes peuvent etre envisages comme des œuvres d’art a part entiere, mais aussi etre consultes en bibliotheque en lien avec de la litterature dite secondaire ou d’autres sources de l’histoire de l’art, comme les pieces d’archives et les imprimes ephemeres. Ces derniers presentent une source inestimable d’informations pour les historiens de l’art, comme le montre la place de plus en plus importante qu’ils occupent dans les expositions. In a library the books are arranged on the shelves in order to facilitate their retrieval. Similarly, in the large catalogues of books and bibliographies compiled over the centuries (“libraries without walls”), references are organised alphabetically or thematically (or using a combination of both). This article attempts to identify and examine the position of the arts within the major bibliographical systems, bibliographies and bibliothecae that have been published since the mid-sixteenth century. It therefore asks which arts were included, and questions how far we can identify a “modern system of the arts”. It also identifies the disciplines with which the arts were most frequently identified and connected (mechanical arts, sciences, literature and poetry). As a descendant of the Bibliotheque d’art et d’archeologie Jacques Doucet, its affiliation with the university is today lively and meaningful. The incorporation of the Bibliotheque centrale des musees nationaux, formerly at the Louvre, on January 1, 2016 has invited museums into the heart of INHA’s collections. For the three entities concerned, this change has involved – and still involves – a questioning of the orientation and missions of the libraries they represent. The Louvre museum has launched a vast project of promotion and coordination of its libraries. After extensive preparatory work, the Bibliotheque centrale des musees nationaux (BCMN) has been physically absorbed into the INHA, requiring a necessary examination at the INHA, not only of its history, but also of its project. Indeed, for the INHA library, the foundation stone that is the BCMN consolidates this inauguration in completely renovated spaces: a reading room with four hundred seats, together with open-access stacks containing 150,000 documents on three levels, opening with the Bibliotheque nationale de France and in particular its departement des Estampes et de la photographie, but also with the Ecole nationale des chartes. La memoire collective avait parfois retenu celle des œuvres d’art, et notamment des peintures, au poids symbolique toujours premier dans les imaginaires. Mais le vol (ou la destruction, c’est selon) de tableaux ne fut pas le seul signe de la volonte de puissance nazie sur les choses de l’âme et de l’esprit : sculptures, objets d’art, œuvres graphiques, mobiliers, instruments de musique, archives, livres furent pourchasses avec autant de determination que le furent ceux qui les possedaient.
