Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie [Journal of the German-Speaking Society of Music Theory]

Reichert
\u0000 \u0000This article explores the much-discussed irony in Silvestre Revueltas’ music, taking his orchestral composition Janitzio (1933) as an example. First, the historical context of the establishment of new music in Mexico at the beginning of the twentieth century is discussed by describing the effects of the Mexican Revolution (1910–20), its institutionalization, and the questions it raised about nacionalismo, mexicanidad, and mestizaje on the musical discourse. This is followed by an examination of the compositional strategies in Janitzio, which create an ironic effect. A method of composition with sound modules is identified, through which strong contrasts can be created. This modular compositional strategy occurs at the level of tonality, meter, and cadences. The effect of irony is always created by the impression of a seemingly veiled strong contrast, as if what has just been heard had never happened. Finally, a reading of the irony in Revueltas’ music as a critique of the nacionalismo debate is problematized. It is argued that Revueltas’ ironic dissociation from nacionalismo is simultaneously a dialectical participation in the construction of a ‘Mexican’ cultural identity (mexicanidad).
Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie [Journal of the German-Speaking Society of Music Theory]

Schiemann
\u0000 \u0000In Elements of Sonata Theory James Hepokoski and Warren Darcy have proposed a theory of concerto first-movement form which seeks to put an end to the ongoing discussion of its formal autonomy by effectively describing it as a mere subtype of sonata form. Their interpretation of concerto first-movement form as “Type 5 Sonata” relies mainly on two principles, both aiming to subsume the structural idiosyncrasies of the form under a broader sonata paradigm: first, the residual tutti-pillars of ritornello form are integrated into the modular order of a higher-level rotational scheme that is vital to their Sonata Theory in general. Second, they postulate a concerto-specific synthesis function of the recapitulation, in which the thematic divergence of the first tutti and the first solo is reconciled in a process somewhat analogous to the resolving of the harmonic contrast of primary and secondary theme zone in the exposition. The Type 5-model is based almost exclusively on Mozart’s concertos; nevertheless, Hepokoski and Darcy do imply that this model is analytically valid outside of the Viennese-classical context and argue for its importance in the postclassical development of the solo concerto. This paper contests the general applicability of the Type 5 model by showing that it proves inapt for the majority of concertos in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Instead of a “rapprochement with sonata form,” the generic identity of the concerto in this repertoire is strengthened by an array of differe
Zeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie [Journal of the German-Speaking Society of Music Theory]
