{"title":"The Problem of Divided Ethnonational Groups in Contemporary Russia and Poland","authors":"R. Barash","doi":"10.11649/sn.2012.004","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11649/sn.2012.004","url":null,"abstract":"The Problem of Divided Ethnonational Groups in Contemporary Russia and PolandBoth Russia and Poland – to varying degrees – tend to maintain ties with “compatriots” living abroad, but these two groups are distinct in their essence. Poles living outside Poland can be rather qualified as part/parts of a divided people, whereas Russian-backed compatriots form a divided nation, and moreover, form not a divided nation of the Russian Federation, but a post-Soviet one.The Government of the Russian Federation used to claim maintaining ties with “Russian compatriots” living abroad. The theme of the rights of Russians living abroad is among the most popular ones in Russian media. The groups of Russian-speaking people who live in the former Soviet republics have often been subjects or objects of conflict situations in the last 20 years because of their desire to live in accordance with their identity. But the essence of this group of so-called Russians, living in the post-Soviet space, is very complex. Russian-backed compatriots form not a divided people – in an ethnic sense – but a divided nation (a cultural or historical, non-ethnic group). And moreover, such groups form not a divided nation of Russian Federation, but a post-Soviet divided nation. Problem podzielonych grup etniczno-narodowych we współczesnej Rosji i PolsceZarówno Rosja jak i Polska dążą, choć w niejednakowym stopniu, do zachowania więzi z rodakami zamieszkałymi poza granicami kraju, jednakże te dwie zbiorowości de facto są zupełnie od siebie odmienne. Polaków żyjących za granicą można zaliczyć do tej części ludności polskiej, którą określamy mianem Polonii, podczas gdy zamieszkali poza krajem Rosjanie stanowią podzielony naród i, co więcej, tworzą nie tyle diasporę narodową Federacji Rosyjskiej, ile postsowiecką.Rząd Federacji Rosyjskiej utrzymuje, że zależy mu na zachowaniu więzi z Rosjanami mieszkającymi za granicą. Temat praw Rosjan z zagranicy jest jedną z najbardziej popularnych pośród podejmowanych przez rosyjskie media kwestii. Rosyjskojęzyczna ludność żyjąca w byłych republikach Związku Sowieckiego była często w minionych 20 latach przedmiotem i podmiotem sytuacji konfliktowych spowodowanych tym, że wykazywała wolę, aby żyć w zgodzie ze swą tożsamością. Jednak z samej swej istoty charakter tej grupy ludzi, w Rosji nazywanych Russkie, zamieszkujących w przestrzeni postsowieckiej, jest nad wyraz skomplikowany i złożony. Osoby mające rosyjskie korzenie tworzą „naród podzielony“ nie w sensie etnicznym, ale w znaczeniu nieetnicznej grupy kulturowej bądź historycznej stanowiącej narodową diasporę, którą należałoby uznać za postsowiecką.","PeriodicalId":227603,"journal":{"name":"Sprawy Narodowościowe","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133917186","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The memory of this conflict and other events in France which accompanied it is still alive in French society. After many years of oblivion and lack of interest from the highest authorities, this conflict once again becomes the subject of great controversy and heated debate. The disputes focus on the four groups: the French born in Algeria, the Algerians cooperating with the French troops during the war, the other Algerian immigrants and, finally, the former military personnel serving in Algeria. Each group has its own perspective of the events, whereas the politicians try to exploit the memory of the war in the ongoing disputes concerning the integration of the immigrants and the riots in the suburbs. All of this means that even after 50 years the issue of the Algerian war is still evoking new conflicts.","PeriodicalId":227603,"journal":{"name":"Sprawy Narodowościowe","volume":"202 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114452632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It seems that also today many representatives of the Macedonian elite still see the fight for position in the historical culture as a primary aim of their existence in the public sphere. They linked the current political and social situation to the so-called historical traditions and saw Macedonian national identity threatened by Albanian, Bulgarian, Greek, and Serbian nationalists. Taking into account the importance of this phenomenon in the contemporary reality and a variety of approaches both to the way it is defined and to its numerous examples, this study makes an attempt to delineate multiculturalism as a complex socio-cultural phenomenon in the Central-Eastern European context, with all ethnic groups living in this area as its subjects. This complexity can be seen on four levels of multiculturalism: the level of “empirical state of affairs” (demographic), social awareness, the political one and the marketing one. The article makes a consistent connection between theoretical assumptions and methodological proposals, including the presentation of some guidelines taking into consideration the specifics of a particular level – a given research subject and the way of obtaining data, both qualitative and quantitative. As observed, the need to carry out – on various levels – research on multiculturalism in Central-Eastern Europe is also connected with reflection on the regional specifics of this phenomenon so that it avoids being treated as a “copy” of the Western European version.","PeriodicalId":227603,"journal":{"name":"Sprawy Narodowościowe","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128255771","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over the whole of its history, even in the strong isolationist periods, it has imported foreign ideas which were later adjusted to suit its own needs and developed in compliance with its own views. At the beginning, Japan’s main mentor was China, often through the countries of the Korean Peninsula, but the West started to take China’s place as the culturally dominant Alien, the basic supplier of goods. The Japanese became aware that they would probably be unable to chase away the western barbarians and, under the circumstances, they should start to learn from them. “Japan would pass away, turn empty, waste, colourless; it would turn cunning and rich”. But will it indeed be so? “The world is a global village” – the sentence that was once a daring statement is now a cliche, and it is no longer amazing that we get into contact with people from the other hemisphere or that so many students enrol in programmes connected with distant civilizations. Japan is among the countries whose names frequently appear in the surrounding reality and sound less and less exotic.","PeriodicalId":227603,"journal":{"name":"Sprawy Narodowościowe","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133036068","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The conflict focused on Austria, Turkey and Serbia’s disputes over the future status of Bosnia and Herzegovina. One of the intriguing and less known aspects associated with these events were Croatian territorial aspirations in Bosnia. This demand grew stronger and stronger and was openly articulated by political and intellectual circles in Zagreb. The article aims to show how Czas, the most important Polish-language journal in this region, approached the topic of Croatian territorial claims, how these events were commented on and what parallels were found between the course of events in the Balkans and the contemporaneous situation in the Polish lands. The present review enables us to understand better the attitudes of eminent representatives of Cracow’s elite as well as the opinion of the popular strata of the local community on the issue of independence and territorial ambitions of the fellow nation of Croatia.","PeriodicalId":227603,"journal":{"name":"Sprawy Narodowościowe","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-02-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133398543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
