This model is based on a pilot case study and the small number of literature available on company standards. Subsequently, the descriptive model is used in two in-depth case studies at a large financial services corporation. The first one concerns the effects of introducing an IS product standard in a business unit and the other considers the usage of process standards in a software development department. Effects of these standards are identified, also in relation toflexibility. To conclude, implicationsforfuture research are presented.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73838520","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper quantifies the standardisation activities in information and communication technology (ICT) of formal and informal standardisation bodies by relying on the database PERINORM containing formal standards and by analysing two CEN/ISSS surveys of standardisation consortia in 2000 and 2004. The two major insights are that the technical content of activities of formal and informal standardisation bodies is rather complementary than substitutive and that there is a consolidation of consortia activities by a significant reduction of consortia not changing the distribution of activities by technicalfields.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80128572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This means that academics and practitioners devoted to the ongoing development and use of STEP, still lack a significant body of evidence with regards to the factors that influence the adoption of STEP. This paper seeks to identify factors that have impacted the adoption of STEP within the UK defence community. The analysis in this paper is based on Diffusion ofInnovation (DOI) Theory and the theory surrounding the Economics of Standards. Using a case study approach the results indicate that several DOI and economic factors have impacted the adoption of STEP. These include complexity, relative advantage, compatibility, pricing of the standard, opinion leaders and change agents, network effects, switching costs, sponsorship and innovative contracting. It is envisioned that these results will make a contribution towards understanding the factors and barriers critical to the adoption of data-exchange standards like STEP.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81746958","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At that time the standards profiles helped public administrations in this respect. The boost of e-government that has taken place in recent years has put this concern again in the agenda of public administrations. Interoperability has shown up as a principle in the conception and deployment of the e-government initiatives, and the interoperability frameworks have been the tool for implementing the principle. In this paper, the main e-government initiatives are presented and their policies in the field of standards and interoperability are analysed. The focus is on the degree of commitment with open standards that each e-government agency has made explicit in its interoperability framework.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88646044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The inherent complexity involved in the infrastructural development process including the important role of standards in these structures necessitates analytical tools which can aid in understanding and exploring the infrastructures' systems and services. Traditionally, analysis of the success orfailure of II development has been done retrospectively. In this paper we propose a conceptual analytic model for the prospective exploration of IIs. Through application of the proposedframework to the analysis of two case studies, we demonstrate the usefulness and applicability of the model for the analysis of emerging Information Infrastructures. This is done by analyzing the degree of resistance of the integration of needed components within these IIs.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82326842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents the findings of a quantitative analysis of standards dynamics in ISO/IEC JTCJ, the formal international standards body for IT standardization. It shows the volume of different types of change and developments over time. Certain themes are elaborated upon, such as whether there is a relationship between standards' age and areas of technology. The paper closes by drawing attention to a few maintenance policy issues, and raises several questions forfollow-up research.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"75545610","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order for Web Services to become a ubiquitous technique for program to program communication, however, there need to be a solid framework in place for how Web Services that utilizes the public Internet for transport can be properly protected and secured. As the situation appears today, most Web Services are not publicly exposed but are often deployed inside a corporate, private network. This hampers the vision of Web Services that can be publicly published in directories which potential customers can search in order to find a suitable service to satisfy their need.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"81014018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SIP provides a registration service so that the users can upload their current locations for use by proxy servers. A finite-state machine (FSM) model for SIP registration process is presented. The complexity of the SIP registration model is increased due to the concurrent timers, namely retransmission, transaction and registration interval timers, that are running during SIP operations. This FSM model is then used to generate minimum-cost test sequencesfor conformance testing ofSIP telephones manufactured by Avaya. These test cases are planned to be presented to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Technical Committee Methods for Testing and Specification (MTS) to be adopted as complementary test cases to the existing SIP Test Suite.","PeriodicalId":22233,"journal":{"name":"The 4th Conference on Standardization and Innovation in Information Technology, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-12-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76438127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
