The presented algorithm is capable of measuring the degree of value that each reinforcement aggregates to the company, considering the transmission agent vision, represented by a set of criteria simultaneously applied, ranking and valuing the reinforcements and thereby assisting the decision making process of the referred implementations. The adopted method is the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). The developed methodology was applied to a transmission system with more than one hundred reinforcements of a Brazilian southeastern transmission utility (CTEEP), ranking and valuing the projects, thereby facilitating decision-making regarding their implementation.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123502932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among these new battery types, sodium-sulphur batteries are a new practical and economical competitive solution to store large amounts of energy. They have many advantages such us the use of non-polluting components and longer life. Using power electronics, these new batteries can be used for peak saving (PS) or power quality (PQ) purposes. In either case, it is necessary to study their dynamic behaviour through a representative model. This work firstly describes the main features of sodium batteries. Then, it presents a new model developed in MATLAB/Simulink and implemented in a testing power system. Analysis and conclusions are included in the final sections.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129046464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, they have to be tuned based on certain defined operating range using averaged mathematical models. Loading conditions have great effect on PI controllers; PI controllers are subjected to failure under dramatic load changes. This limits the PI controller's operating range. Moreover, transient and steady state response both get affected by changing the operating range. This paper presents a novel smart-PID controller for optimal control of DC-DC boost converter used as voltage controller in PV systems. This proposed controller maximizes the stable operating range by using genetic algorithms (GA) to tune the PID parameters ultimately at various loading conditions. Then, a fuzzy logic approach is used to add a factor of intelligence to the controller such that it can move among different values of proportional gain (Kp), derivative gain (Kd) and integral gain (Ki) based on the system conditions. This controller allows optimal control of boost converter at any loading condition with no need to retune parameters or possibility of failure. Moreover, the paper presents a novel technique to move between the PI and PID configurations of the controller such that the minimum overshoot and ripple are obtained, which makes the controller very applicable for PV systems supplying sensitive loads. The controlled boost converter is used as an interface between photovoltaic (PV) panels and the loads connected to them. It converts any input voltage within its operating range into a constant output voltage that is suitable for load feeding. The proposed smart controller adapts the duty cycle of the boost converter based on input voltage and loading conditions such that it outputs a constant output voltage. A prototype system has been developed to verify the applicability of the proposed controller. Moreover, simulation and experimental results both confirm its validity as an effective and reliable controller for boost converters in PV systems and the possibility to use it in different applications.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117109752","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective of the STHS problem is to optimize the electricity production, considering a short-term planning horizon. In this problem, hydro and thermal plants must be coordinated in order to satisfy the electricity demand at the minimum cost and complying with reliability standards. Mathematically, the STHS is modeled as a deterministic, nonlinear, mixed-integer and large scale optimization problem. A Lagrangian Relaxation - LR scheme based on a variable splitting technique is proposed. By using it, the resulting separable dual problem is solved by a Bundle method. The purpose of this study is to analyze the decomposition strategy and the quality of the solution produced by the LR and the pseudo-primal point, which is calculated by active cuts of the Bundle method. A computational model is tested on a hydrothermal configuration, whose data were extracted from the Brazilian Hydrothermal power system.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116219278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One goal is the recovery of non-technical energy losses by determining the typical load and demand factors of similars consumers. With the results, it is expected to improve relations between consumer utility and consumer of electricity. The development of the methodology has statistical fundament. For the dimensioning of survey samples, aspects such as geographical area, class and consumption ranges were considered, resulting in the determination of load and demand factors. The research results in estimates of consumption closer to reality when compared to values obtained by current estimates.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116435625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These failures, in part, can be attributed to the high electric field (E-field) magnitude at end fittings of these insulators, which may lead to partial discharges activity. The E-field values recommended by manufacturers and researchers, to avoid this phenomenon, are not fully consensual yet, particularly when considering the insulator under service conditions, because the E-field can be affected by several factors. This paper analyzes the E-field along polymer insulators through computational simulations using finite element method to model the insulator and water drops. In association with the simulations laboratory, experiments were performed, where the corona voltage inception was observed. The experiments were made to reproduce moisture conditions on the insulator surface. The results clearly show how certain service conditions may increase the E-field.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115977191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
