This technique is based on a special kind of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) known as Self-Organizing Maps (SOM), which is a network, trained using unsupervised learning. The proposed technique performs the thermal profile analysis of ZnO surge arresters when submitted to their operating voltage. From this analysis, the SOM network can determine the status of the surge arrester. So, this technique may be a very useful tool to power system utilities in their predictive monitoring activities, as well as to the manufactures, assisting the project of more robust surge arresters.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116026195","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The identification of efficient and well-timed investments in electric distribution networks that cope with large power market uncertainties is currently an open issue of significant research interest. Strategic flexibility for seizing opportunities and cutting losses contingent upon an unfavorable unfolding of the long-term uncertainties is an attribute of enormous value when assessing irreversible investments in Distribution Systems. In this sense, DG units appear as an effective manner of adding flexibility to the distribution expansion planning. This article proposes an investment valuation approach which properly assesses the option value of deferring investments in distribution feeders whereas gaining flexibility by investing in DG units. The flexibility provided by DG investments -option to abandon and to relocate-is assessed through a Real Option Valuation approach based on the novel Least Square Monte Carlo method(LSM).In order to illustrate the feasibility of the proposed valuation approach, a traditional expansion strategy (distribution feeders) and a flexible investment strategy (distribution feeders and DG) are compared in a study case. The article shows that a proper arrangement of feeders and DG may lead to efficient investments by allowing a progressive adaptation of the distribution grid to the changing scenarios.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120836274","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The BH Centro 1 substation is the biggest substation of Cemig Distribution Company, with regard to its transformation capacity (138-13.8 kV – 150 MVA). Operating since 1970, the substation has been showing maintenance problems associates to the difficulty of attainment of spare parts for some equipment and rise of the risk of failure due to its high period of operation. Thus, the construction of a new substation was defined. The conception of the BH Centro 2 substation faced some challenges, due limitations of space, special operational requirements because of medium voltage networks characteristics and short-circuits level limitation. Besides, we tried to avoid the utilization of special equipments, like high impedance transformers and high capacity reactors.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123981731","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As these technologies are being improved, on-line monitoring systems have a special role to prevent failure of major components of the electrical system. The behavior of evolving gases and their critical values have been published in the relevant international standards (IEEE C57.104-1991 and IEC 60599-1999). In this paper, authors address the analysis of the dissolved in oil gases in an oil-immersed 69kV 1200/600∶5 current transformer (CT) that was put under thermal accelerated ageing stress. An on-line monitoring system is adapted to the CT and the data is evaluated under standard diagnostic techniques. A correlation between a dynamic gas evolution in the oil and the estimation of Loss-of-life of the CT has been attempted. Results of a constant load up to 3 times the rated value of the CT indicate a weak correlation between DGA and the life of the CT.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124004745","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These cables failed after only 4 years of service. It was found that the copper woven fibre glass (CWFG) tape and the water swellable tape had many burnt stains. The causes of these stains were analysed. It was proved from theoretical analysis and experimental investigations that there was a problem of bad contact between the outer semi-conductive screen and the aluminum sheath. During operation, the charging current from system ac voltage damaged the semi-conductive layer and caused the insulation breakdown. The lessons learnt from these failures are also discussed in the paper.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124075278","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of these are environmental, which is done via simulations in laboratories, but these never become so severe and demanding as the present conditions of operation in the field. Therefore, this research develops a methodology to evaluate different designs of polymeric insulators (silicone rubber) suspension type with galvanized steel hardware, aluminum and polymer coated in a natural environment. For this, a specific area was available where environmental conditions are the most severe on the west coast of Zulia State, located north of the Venezuela Guajira, and establishing it as a Natural Laboratory. As a result recommendations were established for the characteristics of polymeric insulators to be used in the distribution network in the Zulia region, in order to obtain the highest reliability through the useful life.","PeriodicalId":222318,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE/PES Transmission and Distribution Conference and Exposition: Latin America (T&D-LA)","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116824273","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
