It depicts a female shaman who worships snakes, a man's maniacal love for that female shaman, and the tragic fate that the two face as a result of that love. This study tries to search for the root of the horror, dream, bizarreness, and beauty of the 'Picture of White Serpents’--the fantasy created by dozens of snakes wrapped around a woman's beautiful body—which cannot be explained by modern rationality. The Baek Baek Gyo (White Cult) Incident, which shook Korean society in the late 1930s when Baeksado was published, can be an important clue to this search. This study focuses on the relationship between the Baek Baek Gyo Incident and the creation of Baeksado while trying to find the traces of the supernatural world that have been removed under the name of 'civilization'.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114242463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, I argued that Benjamin appropriated the concept of “affinity” for his own art criticism and he valued the interaction between a writer and a critic as a production of “affinity” while criticizing a biographical approach toward a writer. Secondly, I proposed that Benjamin’s initial efforts for a dialectical structure resulted in the discontent with its “synthesis,” which Goethe had also echoed in his novel. Due to such a discord, Benjamin had to abandon the system for his essay which had been expressed as the table of contents. However, I’d like to suggest such a theoretical trajectory as a process to form “dialectics outside dialectics,” which nurtured Benjamin’s unique “synthesis” of Messianism and philosophy of history. I concluded that Benjamin's Goethe's affinity adopted a 'counterpointal rhythm' to refashion dialectics for his unique art criticism.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134046606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is no exaggeration to say that it was the beginning of an ambitious plan to recapture the universality of local literature, i.e. national literature on the premise of universal/special hierarchy. Under this critical mind, he recalls his early research as a sub-literature and discusses the need for local literature research through this. In order to examine the theory and practice of Jo Dong-il, who tried to specialize in local literature as a sub-category of world literature, the first task was to analyze the research support from the Ministry of Education and the route of US aid as conditions for the boom of Korean Studies research in the 1960s.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133083184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Butterfly compared mainly to those in John LutherLong’s short story “Madame Butterfly,” this paper affords us a renewedunderstanding of the Orientalist hierarchy between the West and the East.The paper argues that, by constructing the multilayered identities of andcomplicated relationship between the main characters, René Gallimard andSong Liling, who cross the gendered and racially defined boundaries, thefilm deals critically with the Orientalist view of the West toward an Easternfeminine love, in which a beautiful, submissive Eastern woman is selflesslydevoted to a Western man. Using the ideas of self-seduction,self-deception, colonial mimicry, the Third Space, etc., the paper also pointsout the limitations of their crossing of the boundaries. In particular, MarcelMauss's essay of donation, Jacques Derrida's concept of pure donation,and Paul Ricoeur's Christian giving theory are applied to Mauriac's majorworks to derive a rich and new interpretation. In Mauriac's works, there isa world of “grace” that transcends a giving as an exchange. Grace,which means “gift” in Greek, is not given in return for any deed or merit,but is unilaterally given from God. The first gift is handed down as a“command” for love, and those who come into contact with thiscommand practice the sacrifice of self-renunciation. Their sacrifice is afree gift that is passed on to the universal other.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115441352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A truewriter has to protest, point out contradictions, and criticize in order to change thereality. Vargas Llosa’s novel, The Dream of the Celt tells the story of Roger Casement,a prominent British diplomat and an Irish independence activist. The novel “literarily”explores the plunder of colonial capitalism, including the torture, exploitation, andgenocide of indigenous peoples in the Congo and the Peruvian Amazon. The chaptersthat deal with the ‘Amazon problems’ reveal the savagery and greed of capitalism andhuman rights violations against indigenous peoples. The novel teaches us that whathuman beings really require is the restoration of humanity rooted in freedom andjustice. This paper seeks to ‘expose’ the atrocities of barbaric capitalism perpetratedby rubber businessmen, examining the restoration of the rights of indigenous peoples.Results of this study will provide not only an opportunity to explore the historical andsocio-cultural values of Vargas Llosa's literature, but also the opportunity tounderstand the wounded history and the sick reality of Latin America.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115677330","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since the essence of Christianity is the spiritual warfare between Christ and Satan, the sacramental act and the secular chivalric literature are naturally connected. By summoning the Spanish public's passion for chivalric literature and incorporating it into his sacramental act, a representative genre of the Counter-Reformation, Lope de Vega satisfied not only the Catholic Church's purpose of catechesis but also the adventurous taste of the Spanish audience. The incorporation of chivalric literature, a typical secular literature, into a Catholic religious drama, ideally embodied the aesthetics of Horatius' dulce et utile.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129331989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although the militant black activists consider the non-violent Movement is obsolete, Walker tries to affirm the value of the Civil Rights Movement by examining the hearts and minds of a black female activist Meridian Hill in the midst of revolutionary social change. Meridian decides to participate in the Movement when she realizes that there are so many innocent losses of community leaders and activists. Her mourning for the losses and her involvement in the Movement helps her understand the importance of communal spirit and overcome racism and androcentric perspectives. Remembering the Movement and revealing the process of Meridian’s personal transformation, Meridian is a powerful reminder of the Movement’s legacy.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116649232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Win Lyovarin’s novel True Blue portrays the reality of the civil wars in Thailand as well as the political prisoners who were defeated during the turbulent period from 1933 to 1944. This study aims to find out the situation in Thailand where ideological conflicts had escalated into a civil war and human rights and humanism in the novel. This fictional work is about high-born royalty and intellectuals, who have been incarcerated as political prisoners, and contains ideas relating to their actions of resistance. The ideological conflicts that arose from the hopes of creating a better social system, the problems of human rights, the conditions and driving forces of human life, and the desire for humanism are sorely needed even today.","PeriodicalId":221681,"journal":{"name":"Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Literature Studies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126413023","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
