The results of the present study show that there are two strategies used by the Padang restaurant’s owners for the naming practices, namely divergence strategy and convergence strategy. The first strategy is carried out by using Minangkabau words, while the second one by using Indonesian words or foreign loan words which are already integrated into Indonesian vocabulary. Semantically the words used as the basis of naming refer to various concepts reflecting values and world views of Minangkabau people.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128539811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The collected data were analyzed qualitatively using Role and Reference Grammar as the theoretical framework. As a typical head-marking language, Kodi language has extensive agreement or cross-referencing on heads such as verbs and nouns marked to agree with grammatical properties of their arguments including type and number of person. Kodi has pronominal clitics that mark morphological cases including nominative, accusative, genitive and dative. The overt subject and object, either in the form of pronominal or noun phrases, can be omitted and the sentence is still perfectly grammatical because the bound pronominal morpheme alone serves to indicate the function of predicate arguments. The overt subject and object are optional as they function to emphasize statements and to avoid ambiguity. S, A and O in Kodi are marked with different types of morphological cases. The predicate arguments can also be referred by clitic clusters, i.e., pronominal clitics with dative-dative and genitive-dative marking.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"284 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115329657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The language and its cultures are in the endangered situation due to internal factors (for example due to mixed marriage and migration) and external factors (for example, due to economic, demographic and political pressures). The study documents the language by identifying its dialectological relation with the locally dominant Bima language and with other languages in the region (e.g. Samawa language and Sasak language). Identification was conducted by using elicitation, documentation, interview, and recording. Elicitation was performed in face-to-face interviews with respondents guided by a list of basic words and morphosyntactic forms. Documents were also collected from various forms of oral documents (e.g. folklores, stories, historical accounts and legends) in the language. Interviews were given to adult male and female speakers who are knowledgable of the language and its culture. The data were recorded by using tape recorders and digital cameras. Linguistic analysis was lexicostatistictal and the results show that the the Sambori language is a dialect of the Bima language with differences at the basic word level, but these differences follow predictable patterns of vowel and consonantal changes.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"58 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123364996","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Atadei is an agglutinative language with fusional elements and SVO word order. Adjectives follow the noun they modify and are inflected in attributive position, but are not inflected when used as a predicative. Atadei verbs may agree with the subject, depending on the verb class. This is similar to Lamaholot, but the verb classes in these two languages are different. Some verbs exhibit inflection for all persons, while others do not inflect at all. Pronouns follow a complex system in Atadei, depending on their syntactic function. It is noteworthy that the Alor-Pantar languages of the neighboring islands Alor and Pantar do not belong to the Austronesian language family, and may have contributed to a Papuan substratum in Atadei, such as inalienable possession and clause-final negation (Klamer et al., 2008, p. 136).","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126035766","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to investigate the types and functions of citation in Indonesian article introductions written by Indonesian writers in multiple disciplines published in Indonesian research journals mainly by university based publishers. As many as 160 article introductions in education, social sciences and humanities, science and technology and health and medical sciences (i.e., forty articles in each discipline) were analyzed on their citation types and functions in the introduction section of the articles using genre-based analisys method. The results show that in terms of the use of citation types, the Indonesian article introductions are similar to those in English articles but not in terms of the use of citation function. Unlike in English journal articles, the main functions of citation in Indonesian article introductions are to support the importance of the research topic, to justify the research problem, and to present positive justification towards the information in the cited references.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124215989","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Data, transcription of recorded utterances of some heritage languages in South and West Sulawesi, were analyzed employing Yassi’s framework. The study reveals that B&L’s fails to distinguish a kinship-based interaction from those of non-kinship one. Intimacy on kinship relations, like interaction among brother-sisters denoted different behaviors from those of among friends. The former tended to be asymmetrical where the elder employed positive politeness and the younger used negative politeness. The latter tended to be symmetrical where all participants tended to employ positive politeness. Similar behavior also denoted by a kinship-based asymmetrical interaction, for instance, interaction among husband-wife-children which is completely different from those of non-kinship one such as interaction between bosses and staff.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130874946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mistakes were classified into five types: sentences without subject, excessively long sentences, run-on sentences, unfinished sentences, and hanging clauses. It also aimed to determine whether two techniques called Consciousness Raising and Noticing techniques could help the subjects reduce the proportion of their ineffective sentences. The ten subjects were instructed to write academic essays before being taught with the two techniques, and later were instructed again to write essays after being taught with the two techniques. The whole treatment spanned a semester, consisting of twelve sessions in the classroom. The result indicated that run-on sentences, hanging clauses, and excessively long sentences were the most frequent mistakes in their essays. Meanwhile, the Consciousness-Raising and Noticing techniques only had a significant impact on the category of excessively long sentences. The subjects made significantly fewer mistakes in this category after the application of the two techniques. Some implications for further research and practical applications are then presented.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117350626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two kinds of instruments were used to elicit data in this study: a six-minute silent movie and a picture about some activities to commemorate the Indonesian Independence Day. The elicited data from the movie instrument shows that both the lower-grade and higher-grade students were more at ease with Javanese than with Indonesian. From the picture-triggered speech, the result is that the higher-grade students superseded the lower-grade students in their fluency in Indonesian as well as in their ability to construct longer utterances in the language. This study demonstrates that the children’s proficiency in Javanese – their first language – remains at the basic level and it does not develop even though the children are in the higher grade. However, all children are more comfortable with Javanese when they have to do retelling. When the children were given a task that is related to academic requirements, such as describing something that is based on a picture, the higher-grade children perform better in Indonesian rather than in Javanese.","PeriodicalId":221379,"journal":{"name":"Linguistik Indonesia","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116300165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
