Lebanon’s power shortage, manifested in the daily power outages (load shedding), and whose main cause is the insufficient power generation capacity, has become an unbearable event in Lebanon. In view of that, renewable energy technologies emerge as the suitable solution, since Lebanon proves to have a notable renewable energy potential including an important average wind speed, active water resources, high daily solar irradiance, and outstanding geothermal resources. In this paper, a new innovative solution has been proposed to improve the power generation capacity of an existing Lebanese thermal power plant (Deir Ammar). Which is located in northern Lebanon, it is to be supported with an offshore wind farm. This proposal has good potential to be feasible since it utilizes the unused area next to the power plant, exploits the high average wind speed, and provides a notable boost in MW rating of the existing thermal power plant.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"229 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133895121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rising number of cars that exceeds the capacity of the roads, the inefficiency of public transportation infrastructures and the non-adaptive traffic light systems are contributors to the traffic crisis. Most roads in Lebanon suffer from traffic jams due to the traditional static green and red times allocations that are inconsiderate to the current state of the traffic. A solution to this problem is a system that adapts to the variations of the traffic dynamically and updates the traffic signal phases accordingly. In this paper, an adaptive traffic light system is implemented using reinforcement learning and tested using real data from Lebanese traffic. For training and testing the system, a software simulation tool is used. This tool can simulate the traffic intersection and allows the neural network to interact with it. Compared with the actual traffic light system, the proposed model displayed a reduction in average queue lengths by 62.82% and in average queuing time by 56.37%.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132721846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most existing E-Voting systems are based on centralized servers where the voters must trust the organizing authority for the integrity of the results. In this paper we propose a novel approach for a decentralized trustless voting platform that relies on Blockchain technology to solve the trust issues. The main features of this system include ensuring data integrity and transparency, and enforcing one vote per mobile phone number for every poll with ensured privacy. To accomplish this, the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) is used as the Blockchain runtime environment, on which transparent, consistent and deterministic smart contracts will be deployed by organizers for each voting event to run the voting rules. Users are authenticated through their mobile phone numbers without the need of a third party server. Results showed that the system is feasible and may offer a step towards ideal environments for such experience.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"59 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132791187","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The suggested approach detects those terms using a combination of NLP and heuristics. It computes the probability that a word is a medical and complex term through text processing and analysis. It then makes use of an ad hoc dictionary to simplify the complex terms. Finally, it exploits the Microsoft Bing cognitive API to retrieve images and videos related to the complex medical terms detected and presents them to the users so that they may have a better understanding of the document being read.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133100762","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both methods introduce Lagrange multipliers to enforce the constraints, hence adding extra variables and equations which renders the equations of motion into Differential-Algebraic-Equations. In this paper we use the constrained Hamiltonian and a Poisson structure to express the full dynamics of the Unicycle in a series of first-order differential equations which does not require the use of Lagrange multipliers. Finally, we simulate the three formulations to validate that the solutions are numerically equivalent.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129128420","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose a framework to answer those challenges by enabling the user to make a search from a Google-like simple interface, and thus create from his search keywords, an intelligent personalized mashup, without needing any programming skills, and yet integrating calls to REST web services, RSS feeds, RDF triples or any other data available on the web. In order to achieve this goal, we designed an ontology that can hold the description of any web resource, and implemented an automated service composition engine that takes advantage of this ontology. The engine has two main execution phases: The startup phase, implemented for performance improvement, which scans the semantically defined resources in order to create a HashMap linking each output to one or more chains of potential matching services. Matching services are services having an output linked by an inferred similarity to another service input. The processing phase, where a query analyzer inspects the ontology, and checks with Dbpedia and WordNet, in order to decompose the user request into input and output parameters. A type-based score model is used to decide which chain among the available chains to execute. The usefulness of our approach, was validated by developing a mobile client application which was used to test the implemented engine.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124120202","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It can be considered the most time and resource consuming operations due to the need of complex operations. The main of this manuscript is to investigate the contribution of High Level Synthesis (HLS) techniques on the implementation of real time FFT algorithms using field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs). In particular, this study focuses on communication systems incorporating filter-based-multicarrier modulations (FBMC), a promising candidate for the 5G technology. In order to evaluate the contribution of HLS, we implemented and tested various combinations such as: 8 and 16 points radix-2 and radix-4 FFT using finite precision, HLS tools and HDL while prompting parallelization, pipelining and hardware reuse architectures.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128413121","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To cope with this evolution, caching of VoD contents closer to the users in core, metro and even metro-access optical network equipment is regarded to be a prime solution that could help mitigating this traffic growth. However, the optimal caches placement and dimensioning is not univocal, especially in the context of a dynamic network, as it depends on various parameters, such as network topology, users behavior and content popularity. In this paper, we focus on a dynamic VoD content delivery scenario in a metropolitan network implementing different caching strategies. We evaluate the performance of the various caching strategies in terms of network-capacity occupation showing the savings in resource occupation in each of the network segments. We also evaluate the effect of the distribution of the storage capacity on the overall average number of hops of all requests. The obtained numerical results show that, in general, a significant amount of network resources can be saved by enabling content caching near to end-users. Moreover, we show that blindly providing caching capability in access nodes may result unnecessary, whereas a balanced storage distribution between access and metro network segments provides the best performance.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127010922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The latter design is based on a smart and safe medical box that assists patients in taking their pills treatment on time. Two main functionalities characterize this system: safety which assures the wellbeing of the patient and the good functioning of the system by duplicating the electrical components and the security that helps keeping the medication out of the reach of the children by automatically looking the medical box whenever the patient takes his pills. This system can also be monitored by the patient parents as it will be linked to a phone application. This application will be used to configure the medical box by calculating the weight of each pill, setting the schedule of medical intake, alarming the user of the number of remaining pills, generating alarms whenever the patient does not take the required number of pills or doesn’t take them at all, and so on… This system was implemented and tested by more than 50 patients who were taking several medication types (each one of them takes one medication only) and were using different mobile phone. The overall results were very acceptable with a faulty alarm generation below 3%.","PeriodicalId":220641,"journal":{"name":"2018 IEEE International Multidisciplinary Conference on Engineering Technology (IMCET)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2018-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132067220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
