As-built BIMs are often created using laser scanners that provide dense 3D point cloud data. Conventional static laser scanning approaches often suffer from limitations in their operability due to the difficulties in moving the equipment, the selection of scanning location, and the requirement of placing targets or extracting tie points for registration of each scanned point cloud. This paper aims at reducing the manual effort using a kinematic 3D laser scanning system based on graph-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) for continuous indoor mapping. The robotic platform carries three 2D laser scanners: the front scanner is mounted horizontally to compute the robot’s trajectory and to build the SLAM graph; the other two scanners are mounted vertically to scan the profiles of surrounding environments. To reduce the accumulated error in the trajectory of the platform through loop closures, the graph-based SLAM system incorporates AdaBoost loop closure approach, which is particularly suitable for the developed multi-scanner system providing more features than the single-scanner system for training. We implemented the proposed method and evaluated it in two indoor test sites. Our experimental results show that the false positive rate was reduced by 13.6% and 7.9% for the two dataset. Finally, the 2D and 3D mapping results of the two test sites confirmed the effectiveness of the proposed graph-based SLAM.","PeriodicalId":220018,"journal":{"name":"Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123560325","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many decision-makers are struggling to determine whether to conduct a remodeling because of insufficient information including standard or method for projecting the price of their facilities after remodeling works. In this context, this research has conducted for analyzing how the price of the MFH is shifted by remodeling works. To achieve this research goal, (i) fourteen MFH remodeling cases were collected and (ii) price variation for the collected cases was analyzed in order to figure out how remodeling work affects the price of MFH cases. Finally, this research suggested the factors determining price of the MFH, wherein remodeling work has been conducted. From the results of this research, it is expected that the decision-makers can understand what is the crucial factors for determining the price of their MFH when they plans remodeling, and further this research can be a corner stone for developing a model for predicting the price of MFH if remodeling would be performed.","PeriodicalId":220018,"journal":{"name":"Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management","volume":"80 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133173487","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SMCCs’s recent trend have clearly shown the changes of contract types from single subcontractor projects to multiple general contracting projects. However, among those multiple projects performed by SMCCs, 1 out of 3 projects were deficit projects that impact the overall performance of the firm. To increase such performance, risk management for in international construction must be managed at the enterprise level for SMCCs. This research aims to create a multiple project management model for SMCCS that employs the concept of acceptable risk to assess the limit risk level for corporation to acceptable. Using the accumulated data from previous survey and International Construction Association of Korea (ICAK), integrated risk of each firm and their profitability of each project are analyzed. Through the analysis, each firm’s acceptable risk level is derived. Through the two research steps, acceptable risk algorithm was developed based on corporate integrated risk and profit correlation. To prove the acceptable algorithm relevance, financial statement analysis of 3 corporation was derived that level of acceptable risk and financial statement were available. Through the approach, this research allows the firms to analyze the firm’s capability and find projects that suits the firm’s situation and capability.","PeriodicalId":220018,"journal":{"name":"Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132219502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PERT technique is impossible to estimate relationship of each activity probabilistically when there are overlapping relationships because it is limited to Finish-to-Start(FS) relationship. In order to overcome this kind of limitation of PERT technique, PLET(Probabilistic Linkage Evaluation Technique) has been suggested to probabilistically estimate project duration for various overlapping relationships for each activity. However, estimating project duration by PLET technique only considers uncertainty of relationship between activities and not activity time, thus it is not the perfect duration estimating method. The main objective of this research is to propose the integration model of PERT and PLET and verify its probabilistic validity. By verifying application of time calculation method of integration model in practical case, this research will suggest probabilistic project duration estimating method in schedule plan of high-risk construction industry.","PeriodicalId":220018,"journal":{"name":"Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116038390","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, the skill of individual operators of earth work equipment can significantly affect overall construction schedules. Many invisible areas inevitably exist in construction site because of the nature of construction site where occlusions occur from structures being built, installed or moving equipment, moving workers, etc. The lack of visual information regarding tasks critically impedes the effective performance of operators of earth work equipment. AR (Augmented Reality) is a computer technology that superimposes virtual objects onto the real world scene. This characteristic of AR may address the lack of visual informations in earth work process, thus helping to improve the work efficiency of operators of earth work equipment. The purpose of this study is to present a task-visual information map that identifies visual informations required in tasks of earth work and which of the tasks are suitable for AR technology. This study focuses on visual informations in tasks of earth work with excavators. The map was created based on the investigations on the problems of each task of earth work with excavators and visual informations required to address the problems. Through the map, four visual informations were found to be suitable for AR technology to improve the work efficiency of excavator operators. Based on the findings of this study, AR systems for excavators can be developed more effectively.","PeriodicalId":220018,"journal":{"name":"Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131533769","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many construction projects have failed to meet their originally intended project deadline due to various factors such as weather, labor supply, equipment, procurement, accidents, etc. Consequently, emergency construction work scenario has to be implemented in order to shorten the duration and satisfy the original estimated schedule. However, many critical decisions in emergency scenario rely solely on the experience of a construction manager. Thus, this paper proposes TCTO optimization model to decide the most effective alternative out of various working scenarios which are generated by the combination of work group and work time. The developed TCTO model provides the optimum schedule that satisfies the practical constraints. Future research could involve the integration of resource leveling with the proposed model. This would make the model more versatile.","PeriodicalId":220018,"journal":{"name":"Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133337348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As such, Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis is being increasingly utilized to assess the design value of engineering work in Korea. Additionally, the Public Procurement Service in Korea announced that it will be mandatory for all domestic construction projects to adopt BIM. Furthermore, the paradigm for architectural design has shifted from 2D to 3D, and to BIM, which includes a data management system. Within this background, however, there is currently no adequate BIM-based LCC analysis software and the requirements of cost estimation for repair and replacement cost for a building is not completely adequate in BIM tools such as Revit and Archicad. Therefore, this study suggests a process of cost estimation for repair and replacement (R&R) cost based on IFC data. First, we analyzed existing R&R criteria and defined BIM-based requirements when calculating R&R costs. These requirements were extracted from relevant IFC data. Subsequently, this was saved to a database and a BIM-based database was built for R&R cost estimation. Finally, this database was connected with external databases such as R&R Criteria DB and Cost Information DB to calculate R&R costs. This process is expected to improve upon the traditional process of cost estimation of R&R cost by applying a BIM model. The proposed process can contribute to a further standardizing of BIM-based LCC analysis thru application to initial construction costs, energy costs, and other maintenance costs.","PeriodicalId":220018,"journal":{"name":"Korean Journal of Construction Engineering and Management","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-03-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114168968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
