We present an experimental and theoretical investigation of ultrafast transient four-wave mixing (TFWM) of GaAs-AlGaAs quantum wells for simultaneous excitation of exciton and continuum states. Recent TFWM experiments on semiconductors have shown unexpected results when both discrete exciton states and continuum states have been excited simultaneously by ultrafast laser pulses. The decay of the signal, as a function of delay, is significantly faster than the dephasing time of the excitons.","PeriodicalId":21999,"journal":{"name":"Summaries of Papers Presented at the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"84393817","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently it was demonstrated that spatial optical solitons at /spl mu/W power levels can be supported in photorefractive (PR) media. We show that a new type of incoherently coupled soliton pairs is possible under steady-state conditions provided that their carrier beams share the same polarization and wavelength and are mutually incoherent. They can be readily realized in a simple experimental setup where the optical beams co-propagate collinearly in a biased PR crystal in which case they experience equal electrooptic coefficients.","PeriodicalId":21999,"journal":{"name":"Summaries of Papers Presented at the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80641846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

High harmonics are generated during the ionization of an atomic gas and therefore the probability of ionization, the number of unionized atoms, and the phase matching effects will impose a natural temporal envelope on the harmonic generation. We made some simulations which showed the maximal, minimal, and averaged possible values of the intensity of the harmonic as a function of the angular frequency detuning multiplied by the length of the harmonic pulse. From the envelope of the maximum signal we can extract the high harmonic pulse duration.","PeriodicalId":21999,"journal":{"name":"Summaries of Papers Presented at the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73441858","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
