The temperature dependence of two-photon absorption (2PA) in InSb has been studied with CO/sub 2/ lasers for many years. When this semiconductor is cooled to <20 K, the optical absorption edge increases so that 2PA is just out of resonance with 10.6 /spl mu/m laser light (2/spl planck//spl omega/<E/sub g/). This is due to a combination of bandgap expansion at low lattice temperature and band-blocking by conduction electrons. In a series of experiments we show that intense, picosecond CO/sub 2/ laser pulses can remove band-blocking, turning on \"leakage\" 2PA.","PeriodicalId":21999,"journal":{"name":"Summaries of Papers Presented at the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"73605307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this Letter we revisit the problem of dark solitons evolution under small linear damping or amplification and show that dark solitons generate dispersive waves rather strongly, which leads to the formation of a shelf. To the best of our knowledge, this fact has not so far been examined in detail. The nonadiabatic behavior of dark solitons might imply that in this respect they are less stable than bright ones. We study the impact of this fact on possible dark soliton-based communication systems.","PeriodicalId":21999,"journal":{"name":"Summaries of Papers Presented at the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"91014637","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We demonstrate the resonant-cavity-enhanced effect by placing microwave detectors in a layer-by-layer photonic crystal. We used the output of a network analyzer as the microwave source, and fed the output to a horn antenna to obtain EM waves. The crystal was then replaced in the beam-path of the EM wave, and the electric field inside the cavity was measured by a probe that consisted of a monopole antenna. The output of the antenna was measured by use of two different techniques: network analyzer and microwave detector within the cavity. The first cavity structure was similar to a one-dimensional Fabry-Perot resonator made of two mirrors separated by a distance.","PeriodicalId":21999,"journal":{"name":"Summaries of Papers Presented at the Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83565777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
