This paper has summarized a few results of DfE programs underway at Intel. In semiconductor manufacturing Intel introduces a new manufacturing process every 18-24 months. In order to integrate environmental concepts into the design process Intel has found that the optimal time for inserting DfE into the design process occurs during the technology development phase. By establishing the DfE programs Intel has been successful in reducing the environmental footprints of each successive technology by establishing environmental goals during each new technology development cycle.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131690192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As planning disassembly systems is based on product and process data, of course, it is obvious that data from the early stages of the product life phase can contribute to design disassembly systems that are adapted to certain product characteristics and specific process parameters. Especially nowadays, with recycling quotas prescribed in new legislation (e.g. Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) product data gain in importance to ensure complying with recycling quotas. Here, the most appropriate way to enable utilization of product and process data for disassembly systems design is either data base integration or configuring and applying defined interfaces.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131144581","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To meet these trends, environmental assessment besides delivery, cost and quality of products should be considered as an important factor in the new product development phase. In this paper, a knowledge-based approximate life cycle assessment system (KALCAS) for the collaborative design environment is developed to assess environmental impacts in the context of product concept development. It aims at improving the environmental efficiency of the product using artificial neural networks consisting of high-level product attributes and LCA results. The overall framework of the collaborative environment including KALCAS is proposed. The architecture for the collaborative design environment is used in the CO/spl trade/ environment to allow users on a wide variety of platforms to access the product data and other related information. It enables us to tradeoff the evaluation results between the objectives of design alternatives including environmental impacts in the collaborative design environment.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"49 33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131198394","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, lead-free soldering arises concern because of the consumption of scarce resources like silver. Tin does not receive much attention, but compared to lead is scarce as well and the recycling rates are contentious. Sustainability considerations require careful use of resources, especially of scarcer and non-renewable ones. A dynamic model will help to assess the current status and future development of solder consumption and the resulting resource consumption. The current status of solder consumption and recycling shows the resource consumption for metals in (lead-free) solders. The use of silver and of additional tin in lead-free solders should not endanger the supply security. However, interlinkage of silver, lead and tin in ores, as well as the forecasted strong market growth of electronics may have strong influences. The forecasted increasing market of electronics devices requires miniaturization and integration as well as proper recycling to save scarce resources. A tool for sustainability evaluation will help to properly align alloy selection, recycling and legal regulations for most sustainable implementation of lead-free interconnection technologies.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116985814","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Here, decision of life cycle strategy includes selection of appropriate life cycle options (LCOP), such as upgrading, reuse, maintenance, and recycling. For this purpose, this paper focuses on the lifetimes of products and components, distinguishing the lifetime into two categories, physical lifetime and value lifetime. The method consists of two steps; namely, estimation of the physical and value lifetime of a product and its components by using a \"disposal cause analysis matrix\", and selection of the appropriate LCOP for each component based on the estimated lifetime. This paper also illustrates an example using a cellular phone. This result reveals that the proposed methodology can successfully support the decision process of life cycle strategy.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116934562","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This research intended to demonstrate the life-cycle inventory technique employed in the analysis of energy consumption during the lifetime of school buildings in Taiwan. There are two popular types of school buildings in Taiwan. One is steel-based construction (hereafter referred to SC). The other is reinforced concrete construction (hereafter referred to RC). There are five stages in the whole life of school buildings including manufacturing, erection, occupation, demolition and disposal. In this study, a 50-year service time was assumed for both buildings. The results show that the most energy consumption occurs in the occupation stage for both selected school buildings. They contribute 95.8% and 87.2% of the total energy consumption in its service time for the SC and RC buildings, respectively. It also concluded that both selected buildings consumed lots of energy during the first 30 years, and then energy consumptions of the selected school buildings was leveled off. A study of improving shading design was found that the selected SC school building with a shading board could save 29% of energy during its service time, whereas it only saved 13% for the RC building. An uncertainty analysis using the Monte Carlo simulation was also conducted in the study. The data were presented in the means and 95% confidential intervals.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121510726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, in order to improve chemicals management, assessment and appropriate management of the total risk posed by potential hazards and exposure to chemical products throughout their life cycle is necessary rather than management of chemical substances in a conventional manner. From such a viewpoint, much attention is being given to the idea of Chemical Product Policy (CPP), which utilizes the concept of Integrated Product Policy (IPP) for managing chemicals. This paper describes the results of a preliminary study on, and challenges regarding, use of this method for managing the risks of chemical substances more safely and reliably.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117269842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To assess the product recycling process, the economical analysis and environmental analysis of disassembling and recycling waste products are carried out, while the assessment of specific recycling processes has been almost ignored. As material recycling is one of the main recycling modes, this paper systematically discusses the assessment of waste product recycling processes, and presents the assessment method supported by material recycling databases. In order to make the material recycling process economically feasible as well as environmentally conscious, the TOPSIS (Technique for Order Performance by Similarity to Ideal Solution) method is applied to select the optimal one from all the feasible process solutions. Finally, a case study shows that this method is operable and reasonable.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114978115","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
