The study focuses on the dynamic mechanisms driving the adaptation of products to their changing environments. As a result, a strategy, called Eco-evolution, is proposed. Eco-evolution is a strategy based on incremental innovation through re-examination of existent knowledge and technological trajectories. The strategy attempts the identification of lock-in of non-optimal technologies and sustainable alternatives, in order to outline the sustainable design and organizational horizons. To illustrate the practical application of the strategy, an example based on domestic refrigerators is included. The study concludes that eco-evolution is efficient when identifying non-optimal technological trajectories and sustainable options for innovation on the basis of existent knowledge.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116140889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But today, environmental aspects are not included in computer aided design processes and conventional software packages in most of the cases. In the run-up of an intended development project, Eco-Frontier Co. and the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM) examine a product example (PDA, Personal Digital Assistant) to identify the potential of an integrated, software assisted product assessment for ecodesign. From this research, we illustrate the advantages of both methods and demonstrate the potential synergies.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125993599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Among such renewable energies, biomass energy is thought to have a great potentiality. In Kochi, prefectural feasibility studies regarding the biomass energy from trees were planned and studied. However, the wood-based biomass energy system is not economical, and no actual biomass energy projects have started yet in Kochi. The income from the biomass energy (electricity and heat) is much lower than the expenditure for purchasing trees and the depreciation for a biomass plant. Therefore, the items to be discussed here are: 1) how to achieve an economical system considering income and outcome of wood-based biomass energy and 2) how to obtain an efficient biomass system for continuous running operation. The first issue is to find an economical way to obtain some by-products such as ethanol or sugar, which is the idea in the US. Herein, we have tried to produce cypress oil as a by-product from cypress trees. The second is to find an efficient way for biomass energy production. We selected a spouted bed technique rather than conventional fluidized bed techniques which are widely used for biomass energy production. The method was selected so that tar removal is easy compared to the conventional fluidized bed. This report is the interim report on the development of cypress oil extraction and small-sized biomass energy system using the spouted bed technique.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127248342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The classification of these ecomaterials from the perspective of sustainability was introduced to help green procurement movement. The four main aspects considered for the classification are finite resources, persistent substances, ecological system and society. This would help the manufacturers as well as consumers in material and product selection for their goals of achieving sustainable development. Commercialized ecomaterials which introduced in environmental reports of Japanese companies in 2002 were studied. This paper also introduced three ecomaterials examples including ultra-steel for automobile, Toyota super olefin polymer, and eco-cement.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126364741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several surface materials were taken into account because they are seen as the most important indicator of prestige value. During two empiric studies it was tried to rank the materials in their amount of gaining prestige value and causing environmental damage when being used as surface materials for certain products. Accordingly, the environmental impact of the presented materials and products has been analysed. Combining the results of the two empiric studies and the technical analysis of the environmental impact recommendations were produced for product developers. As a conclusion it can be said that prestige value is only of small relevance for electrical (household) products, test persons consider the practical value as more important. Besides that the environmental impact caused by the production of surfaces is very small and can be looked over.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125230992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Substitution of lead-bearing solders can bring out reduction of the toxicity of solders caused by lead, but according to Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), it may cause increase of energy consumption in the soldering process. We investigated the energy consumption of the soldering process at production sites of various companies and compared the values of the energy consumption of mounting process using conventional solder with that using lead-free solder. In results, the increase rate of the energy consumption caused by the substitution of lead-free solder is lower than that calculated by LCA. Therefore the energy consumption of soldering process can hold the status quo.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"242 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124243107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plan, source, make and delivery of the products are affected by the reverse flow of used products and materials for subsequent consumption in manufacturing of new products. This paper gives a comprehensive study on the challenges faced by the manufacturers towards achieving reverse supply chain management. It highlights the issues related to the strategic business model, the business processes and the enabling technologies to be able to operate efficiently in a reverse supply chain environment. It investigates the points that are critical to an efficient supply chain management model, and describes a model to capture the policies of the organization at a higher level and govern the activities at the execution level. Finally it describes some critical research issues for the proposed holistic approach to planning.","PeriodicalId":217614,"journal":{"name":"2003 EcoDesign 3rd International Symposium on Environmentally Conscious Design and Inverse Manufacturing","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123495231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
